• 20 images, each shown for 20 seconds
• Slides advance automaDcally
• Pecha kucha means “chit chat” in Japanese
• Works with almost any topic!
• Created by architects in Japan in 2003 as an event for young designers to meet, network, and show their work in public.
Why pecha kucha? • It’s simple, fun, fast-‐moving, and current!
• Enjoyable for the audience and the presenter
• No more loooooooong presentaDons! Efficient use of class Dme.
• Emphasis is on speaker’s oral language use, not his/her PPT skills
• “…face-‐to-‐face exchange of ideas…encourages real human interacDon” (Grainger, 2012)
• It’s a “fantasDc showcase of unknown talent” (Grainger, 2012)

Tips for Teachers • Intermediate proficiency level minimum • Two weeks for students to prepare • Approve topics for students early on • Demand that students rehearse • Plan a day in the PC lab aber topics are chosen • “Pit stop” with students to check progress • Limit number of words per slide (< 10) And most importantly… • Resist students' requests to shorten their presentaDons. It’s 20 slides x 20 seconds!
SuggesDons for Students
• Choose a topic you’re passionate about and share it!
• Avoid “Top 20” lists (i.e., 20 Best Beaches)
• Don’t procrasDnate
• PracDce, pracDce, pracDce! The most successful presentaDons are well-‐rehearsed
• Choose high-‐quality images, but follow copyright law
• Don’t distort images (i.e., stretch/compress)
• Including audio/video can be tricky
