WHAT IS DYSLEXIA?

Dyslexia is a language based learning disability. People with dyslexia typically have average to above average intelligence. They may have difficulty with reading, spelling, understanding language they hear, or expressing themselves clearly in speaking or in writing. Reading is the biggest area where students seem to struggle.

WORD MEANINGS

DYS = TROUBLE

LEXIA = WORDS

People with dyslexia have trouble with

words.

Page 4: Developmental Reading Disorder

The exact causes of dyslexia are still completely unclear, but brain imagery studies show differences in the way the brain of a dyslexic person develops and functions.

WHAT CAUSES DYSLEXIA?

Page 5: Developmental Reading Disorder

CHARACTERISTICS OF DYSLEXIA

Slow Word Recall

Beyond third grade continuing to reverse and invert letters and rearrange words

More difficulty decoding nonsense words than content words

Difficulty decoding single words in isolation

Difficulty with letter/sound relationships

Confusing small words such as at for to, said for and, does for goes.

Reverses number sequences and math signs (+, -, x, =) even though math skills are typically a strength

May have difficulty learning to tell time

Spelling is usually difficult, frequently spells the same word differently in a single piece of writing

Frequently able to decode a word they cannot spell

Listening comprehension is usually a strength and the student typically can comprehend at grade level what he hears orally

Poor grasp of abstract concepts

Difficulty in telling or retelling a story

Difficulty with rhyming words

DYSLEXIA ISNOT a visual problem

NOT a lack of intelligence

NOT due to a lack of effort

NOT uncommon- 17.5% of United States have dyslexia

NOT responsive to standard reading instruction

Page 8: Developmental Reading Disorder

WHAT IS PHONOLOGICAL AWARENESS?

Page 9: Developmental Reading Disorder

Phonological awareness is the understanding that words are

made up of small bits of sound.

Do fat and cat have the same end sound? What is the

beginning sound in man?

This is hard for a dyslexic person to grasp but is needed for reading, writing, and spelling.
