1. Organisation and Management Curating and Programming 2012/13 formed the first year of Deveron Arts’ Hospitality programme which encapsulates: 1. Travel: Walking and other forms of Slow Travel

2. Hosting: Food, Eating and Accommodation

3. Understanding: Language and Communication

This programme was successful in gaining financial support (Flexi Funding from Creative Scotland) and finding partnership collaborations locally and internationally. From October 2012 funding was obtained to commence a new walking initiative. The Walking Institute has been set up by Deveron Arts/the town is the venue as a unique, year round centre of excellence within the walking & art discourse. Its aim is to develop a walking appreciation programme for people from all walks of life. It will do this by engaging people in a range of challenging, creative and accessible walking activities and discourses, addressing issues and opportunities in relation to health, environment and rural economic development through activities which link walking with art and related disciplines Management, Staff, Volunteers In 2012/13 Deveron Arts has been run by a full time Director (Claudia Zeiske). The full time Project Manager (Anna Vermehren) left Deveron Arts in May to become the Director at Timespan in Helmsdale. Duncan Bremner, Shadow Curator Intern (Oct 2011 – Mar 2012) temporarily filled the Project Manager post until Kate Sargent was recruited in Sep 2012. From Oct 2012 recruitment began for the new Walking project. Simone Kenyon joined the team in an interim role to kick off the project and Diane Smith joined the team in Feb 2013, as Walking Project Manager. Additionally, two Shadow Curator Interns have been engaged for half a year each to assist the Director; and four Project Interns accompanied each project to assist the Project Manager. An intern has also been engaged to support the Walking Project Manager. Despite the changes within the team Deveron Arts have continued to sustain a large programme of events and range of projects, whilst offering specialised learning opportunities for graduates and up and coming curators. 2. Projects and Programmes

Sambasupercollider - Ceilidhamba

Our Revolution is the joy of Samba Alexandra Louzada

A cultural exchange investigating parading in different cultures Daniel Ruiz, Mestre Jonas & Bruno da Tavares (Sambasupercollider) came from Rio de Janeiro to Huntly in May-June 2012. Ceilidhamba kick started Huntly's year of Samba, Marakatu, Coco and other Brazilian rhythms, that was continued later in the year with the project Nordeste/North East - Ceilidhcatu. During their research visit Sambasupercollider looked at opportunities for cultural exchange with our Scottish parading and music traditions. Numerous workshops with schools and informal groups were staged, as well as a parade, during the Portsoy path opening ceremony, ending in a community celebration with Brazilian cocktails in our garden.

The highlight of their stay was a jamming session that included piper Donal Brown, fiddlers from across the town, songwriter Ewen McVicar, guitar and many more local instruments playing next to the ubiquitous samba drums. Artists Website: www.sambasupercollider.com

Alan MacPherson – Rite of Way

A desire path is a path created by usage, not a pre-determined path Gaston Bachelard, The Poetics of Space

A writing and research residency investigating the relationship between art and path making.

Alan Macpherson lives in Huntly and was in residence during summer 2012. Operating within Deveron Arts’ theme of Hospitality and ‘Slow Travel’, the aim of the residency was to advance research and writing on the themes of walking and path making. While the scope of this long term project is international, it also has its feet firmly rooted in Huntly. As such, Alan was simultaneously carrying out his own investigations into walking in and around Huntly. On this side of the project, his concern was with that aspect of walking which Rebecca Solnit refers to as 'the time inbetween', the time of walking to or from a place, of meandering, of running errands’, or what Michel De Certeau calls ‘the act itself of passing-by’. Rite of Way formed part of an on-going attempt to interrogate the act of walking by bringing together existing ideas, activities and diverse interested parties at the same time as breaking down pre-conceived notions and expanding the ways we think and write about walking The main part of Alan's residency was spent on researching desire paths in Huntly; paths that never make it to the ordinance survey map. His time culminated in the making of a new Minor Path, when on Sunday the 19th of August some 45 people walked along a 1k stretch on the river Bogie, recreating an overgrown and almost redundant path. This event was followed by a discussion in the Gladstone play park next to the river on path making ranging from physical intervention to subconscious action of individuals and community. Allysson Velez – Nordeste/North East: Ceilidhcatu

If the structure does not permit dialogue the structure must be changed. Paolo Freire

An exploration of the notions of North East communities and cultures across the Atlantic. Mestre Allysson Velez joined us from Recife in the North East of Brazil from Sept to December. During his residency he explored cultural similarities and traditions of his home state of Pernambuco in the North East of Brazil with those of Huntly and the North East of Scotland. For his project NordEste / North East Allysson worked with Deveron Arts towards a performance at the Halloween/Samhain festival. An audience of over 250 people watched the embryonic North-East of Scotland Huntly Samba School which created opportunities by working with local musicians/artists and visiting samba mestres. During Halloween he was joined by the Edinburgh Samba School.

Allysson also set up shop in his Casa das Ideias on Bogie Street, where he was working with local musicians of all genres towards the recording of the NordEste / NorthEast CD. Musicians like Paul Anderson and Shona Donaldson worked with him as well as NorthEast based Omar Afif with his Afro-Arabian root music, guitarist Keith Cockburn, fiddler Pam Johnston, cornet player Tony Hunter and bag piper Steve Brown Town Collection: Berimbau at backroom of Stewarts Hall, where the samba band practiced Website: www.myspace.com/allyssonvelez Publication: CD Ceilidhcatu: Nordeste/NorthEast is currently in development.

Simon Preston – The Town is the Menu

They dined on mince, and slices of quince, Which they ate with a runcible spoon; And hand in hand, on the edge of the sand, They danced by the light of the moon

Edward Lear

An investigation of local food and eating customs to develop a signature menu for Huntly. Throughout the autumn of 2012 Simon Preston, an artisan food consultant based in Edinburgh, worked with local people to unearth Huntly's food identity and to create and adopt a Signature Menu for the town. As a market town with its roots in agriculture, food is an important part of life in Huntly and forms an integral part of Deveron Arts' current theme of hospitality.

A specially created dining table passed through the town and countryside, spreading conviviality and creating a focal point where people have eaten together and shared experiences and stories that have inspired the Signature Menu. ‘If you were to die tomorrow, what would you like to eat today?’ Simon asked people from all walks of life across town at TESCOS, the meat market, the farmer’s market, the tea dance….. People departed with their favourite dish, often after long deliberations. Then, working with local and visiting chefs Simon transformed these tales into recipes and dishes for cooking and sharing at home, at work, at school, in the street and in local businesses. From Saturday 1 December 2012, the Huntly Signature Menu was launched at restaurants and cafes around the town and in street food form at the Farmers Market. Michael Höpfner - Walking off the Grid

In every walk with nature one receives far more than he seeks. John Muir

A 14 day circuit around Huntly of 30 miles. Michael Höpfner comes from Vienna and visited us in autumn 2012.

Michael spent 14 days walking a 30 mile circuit around Huntly, looking to reconstruct the geography of our landscape. He set off with a group of 20 walkers starting at the Tin Hut in Gartly where he was joined throughout his walk by local walkers along the way. Michael braved rain, wind and snow along the way and also a bit of sunshine. His route took him from the Tin Hut in Gartly via the Clashmach, Drumdelgie, the Ashgrove Filling Station, Cairnie, Rothiemay, Kinnoir, Drumblade (with frequent visits to the school) back to Gartly. At the end of his journey Michael presented his thoughts and some imagery from along the way at a talk in the Huntly Hotel. He was joined by Professor Tim Ingold who gave a talk on the history of walking and by many of the people that met him en route. Publication: in production

Nancy Mteki – Mbereko

‘Have you seen 'the latest thing' in interactive techno-play? It really is astonishing. I only got it yesterday.'

Jonathan Emmett The delights and issues surrounding maternity, childhood and materialism. Nancy Mteki came from Harare/Zimbabwe to Huntly in winter of 2013 with her 16-month-old daughter, Kayla. The Deveron Arts Residency Prize was awarded to Nancy Mteki during Dak'Art 2012 - Biennale of Contemporary African Art by Claudia Zeiske and Pauline Burmann, independent curator and chairperson of the Thami Mnyele Foundation, Holland. Nancy's residency Mbereko investigated the delights and issues surrounding maternity and childhood in relation to material culture. For this she worked with young mothers in the town.

During her residency Nancy worked in collaboration with local artist Norma D Hunter, building relationships with other mothers and young children in Huntly through attending the local mother and toddler groups. Nancy was fascinated by the difference between bringing up a child in Zimbabwe and Europe, in particular the support networks available in form of the various groups she attended in Huntly. Also, the amount of toys children have access to, flabbergasted both her and Kayla. For the final event Nancy and Norma again hosted a farewell picnic lunch with the mothers and toddlers, who were then given the opportunity to try the Mbereko - carrying their baby on their back using a cloth - for a walk to our empty shop. Here the mothers and children participated in a workshop to make dolls from recycled materials and engaged in a conversation with the two experts in the role of toys in childhood.
