(Navaratri( is the festival of orship of the -oddess Shakti# Navratri, the festival of nine
nights is dedicated to the Mother -oddess# .non by other names such as urga, evi,
she occupies a special place in the )indu pantheon# She represents Shakti, the cosmic
energy that animates all beings, and is also considered to be prakriti /nature0, the
counterpart of purusha# $ogether, they are responsible for the creation of the orld
according to the 1uranas and 2edas#
Nine forms of Shakti are worshipped during the Navaratris. The Devis worshipped
depend on the tradition of the region.

Navaratri is separated into sets of three days i#e# into three sets# $hese sets are made in
order to adore different facets of the supreme goddess# On the initial three days, the
-oddess is invoked as the supreme poerful force called urga# -oddess urga is meant
to all our contaminations, evils and defects# On the ne+t three days, she is orshipped as
the mother of spiritual ealth, -oddess Lakshmi, She is the one ho is considered to have
the poer of shoering on her devotees ith the blessings of never*ending ealth# %n the
final set of three days, the -oddess is orshipped as the goddess of isdom, Sarasati#
$he one is responsible for spiritual enlightenment and overall success in life#
She is also orshipped under nine different names for the nine days in Navratri# 7very day,
she assumes a ne character, a ne look and a ne duty# She is orshipped as Shailputri,
3rahmacharini, 6handraghanta, .ushmanda, Skanda Mata, .atyayani, .alratri, Maha

First Day Pooja $he first form of -oddess urga is called Shailputri # She is considered
the daughter of the )imalayas# She is a form of Shakti, the consort of Lord Shiva#
Se!ond Day Pooja $he second form of -oddess urga is knon as (3rahmacharini(# )er
name is derivative of the ord (3rahma(, hich means ($apa( or penace# She is also a form
of 9ma or 1arvati, a form of Mata Shakti#
Third Day Pooja On the third day the goddess is orshipped as 6handraghanta# She is
the symbolic representation of beauty and bravery#
Fourth Day Pooja .ushmanda, is the form of the goddess hich is orshipped on the
fourth day# %t is believed that .ushmanda is the creator of the entire 9niverse and she has
created the entire 9niverse by her laugh#
Fifth Day Pooja On the fifth day, the form of -oddess is called Skand Mata# She is
actually called so because she is here represented as the mother of Skanda, the chief
arrior of the -ods army#
Si"th Day Pooja On the si+th day, the goddess is orshipped as .atyayani# Seated on
her vehicle lion, .atyayani has three eyes and four hands#
Seventh Day Pooja On the seventh day, the -oddess is orshipped as (.alratri(# s the
name suggests, .alrati is as black as a dark night# She has four hands, she is meant to
make the devotees fearless#

#ighth Day Pooja On the eight day, the Mata "ani is orshipped as (Maha -auri(# She is
considered to e+tremely beautiful, hite like sno and accessori'ed ith hite colored
ornaments# She represents calmness and e+hibits isdom#
Ninth Day Pooja On the ninth day, urga is orshipped as Siddhidatri# %t is believed she
consists of all the eight siddhis# She lives on lotus and is orshipped by all the "ishis*
Munis, Siddhas, Sadhakas and Yogis#

On the first day of the Navaratras, a small bed of mud is prepared in the pu5a room of the
house and barley seeds are shon on it# On the tenth day, the shoots are about * ;
inches in length# fter the pu5a, these seedlings are pulled out and given to devotees as a
blessing from god# $hese initial days are dedicated to urga Maa, the -oddess of poer
and energy# )er various manifestations, .umari, 1arvati and .ali are all orshipped during
these days# $hey represent the three different classes of omanhood that include the child,
the young girl and the mature oman#

uring these days, Lakshmi Maa, the -oddess of peace and prosperity is orshipped# On
the fifth day hich is knon as Lalita 1anchami, it is traditional, to gather and display allliterature available in the house, light a lamp or (diya( to invoke Sarasati Maa, the
-oddess of knoledge and art#

$he final set of three days is spent in orshipping the goddess of isdom, Sarasati# %n
order to have all*round success in life, believers seek the blessings of all three aspects of
the divine femininity, hence the nine nights of orship#

protection of health and prosperity# period of introspection and purification, Navratri is
traditionally an auspicious and religious time for starting ne ventures#
