Newsletter Term 2, Week 3

For our Bible Study this term, the staff

are pondering the big question “What‟s

my purpose?” We watched a video

clip of a range of people giving their

answer to this question, and their

answers were fascinating, ranging from

having fun or making money to raising

the next generation well and helping

others.

As I reflect on my life, I can see God at

work fulfilling his purpose in me. Despite

only ever wanting to be a teacher, I did

not view myself as academic enough

due to my dyslexia, and left school as

soon as I turned 16 for a job in a

pharmacy. God had other plans for

me, and within a few years I completed

my Year 11 and 12 through adult

education, and went on to complete my

teaching degree whilst continuing to

work part time.

Upon graduation, I was one of the few

in my year to be offered a fulltime

position in an Education Department

school, which I was thrilled about.

However God niggled at me and

niggled at me about my purpose, and

kept putting Christian education before

me. In late November of my

graduating year I applied for a job in a

Lutheran school, against my better

judgement, and with no clear idea why.

I was selected for an interview, but told

the school I could only be interviewed

two days before Christmas as I was

going on a holiday to Darwin, a fairly

cheeky stance to take for a graduate! They

said they would hold the position open until

then. I went for the interview and was

offered the position. I then had to choose

between the two positions. Once again

God gave me no rest, until at last I

accepted the position in the Lutheran

school. And finally I felt at peace!

I have worked in Lutheran schools ever

since, over a period of around 25 years,

and feel God‟s purpose for me as strongly

as ever.

God‟s Son came with a clear purpose.

Roman‟s 14:9 tells us,

“Christ died and rose again for this very purpose – to be the Lord both of the living and the dead.”

When we live in accordance with God‟s

The cancelled Barossa Airshow may be behind us, but the Committee has been continuing to work behind the scenes to

see if we can reschedule the 2011 Airshow. Whilst there are some logistical problems to overcome in order for this to

happen, we have been inundated with enquiries about a new date. The Airshow Committee, School Council and I remain

committed to the Airshow and the opportunities it brings our school and students– wouldn‟t it be great if we could finish off

the year with the 2011 Airshow successfully completed! We‟ll keep you posted! St Jakobi students may get their new

playground yet!

our heartfelt condolences to the Arnold family and friends,

and mourn the loss of this special young woman with you.

We also mourn with both Joanna Juers and her family, and

HAPPY BIRTHDAY

At the end of Term 1, we had two presenters from Camp Quality

come to visit our school as we were planning to raise money for

them through the Airshow. The presenters introduced us to some

puppets. One of the puppets had been in hospital for a long time to

get treatment for cancer. The other puppet, and us, learnt lots about

cancer and people with cancer. We can‟t catch cancer like a cold

and people with cancer like us to talk and play with them as

friends.

Airshow THANK YOU

Firstly, THANK YOU to all the parents who gave up their time and made special treats for our stall – either at home or at

the P&F baking day. The support from families was overwhelming!

All those beautifully packaged biscuits, lollies, slices and cakes were too good to waste. So, during the first week of this

term we organised 3 food stalls around the community.

From these stalls we raised $578.00. All the money raised from these stalls is going straight back into classroom resources

–Yip pee

BIG THANK YOU‟s must go to;

Sheree Hoffman and Barb Kilpatrick for organising the school baking day.

All the parents who baked goodies, helped out on the baking day or donated ingredients. There are just too many

of you to mention.

Michelle Graetz, Trudy Hodgson, Jo Herrmann, Sue Jericho, Kaylene Jaensch, Ali Hoopmann, Vicki Farrugia,

Mel Menadue, Angela Sosnowski, Naomi Duggan and Fi Jones, who came to my aid and helped out on the 3

community stalls.

Thanks again,

Teena Nicholls

3/4/5 Urban Camp

The year 3/4/5 Urban Camp had a focus on

our Integrated Studies unit into „Behind the

Scenes‟ and was from Wednesday 4th to Friday

6th May. We stayed at Warradale Urban

Camp school and visited the Adelaide Festival

Centre, Patricia Picinini exhibition at the Art

Gallery, Adelaide Oval, Channel 7, Ice Arena,

St Kilda Playground and the Aquadome.

Miss Koop (Year 5)

Talia & Elysha – We think camp was restless, tiring, fun, ecstatic, enjoyable, cold and fun

Yaz & Ike – Camp was extremely fun and just a little bit annoying. It was awesome!

Jayden – On camp I loved Patricia Picinini’s artwork. It was really cool.

Laura – Camp was fun, exciting, challenging, great, cool, awesome and fabulous!

April, Lauren & Hayley – We found camp extremely fun. We mostly

enjoyed ice skating and the Channel 7 studio.

Josh – I think Ice Skating was the best thing I did because I was falling over all the time.

Visit by Minister for Road Safety

Last week Mr Tom Kenyon MP visited St Jakobi

for a first hand look at the traffic and speed

situation. He was able to time his visit to

coincide with after school pick-up, and was

able to view for himself the congestion and

safety issues that we face. Whilst he was

unwilling/unable to give any firm indication of

what his recommendation will be, he did

indicate a drop in speed on school days would

be a simple remedy to the situation. We await

to hear the decision. In the meantime, if you

would like to add weight to his considerations, I

encourage you to phone (Ph: 8264 4482) or

email [email protected] thank Mr Kenyon

for dropping in to view the situation first hand.

Transportable Classrooms

The new building continues to be a blessing to us, with the

extra space a wonderful asset, and the clear, light, pleasant

environment a joy to work in. It has really brought into

sharp contrast however the two transportables in the centre

of the school, and the unappealing and potentially unsafe

conditions they are in. It is planned that these buildings will

be physically removed as soon as feasible. It has been

decided though, that only the transportable building in

better condition, the old computer/library, will remain in

use at present. This will be converted to a specialist

teaching area, with the uniform room housed in one end.

The other transportable building will be put into permanent

retirement! These buildings have served the school

extremely well in the past, but our commitment to a safe and

pleasant working environment for students and staff remains

paramount.

Can you HELP?

St Jakobi has once again been amazing in Term 1 by

providing meals that can be given to school families

in times of need. A big thank you to everyone for

enabling this wonderful service to occur, particularly

Years 3/4 and 6/7A who were rostered on to

provide meals last term. It is wonderful that we are

able to reach out and support each other in our

community. We are in need of some more meals to

replenish our freezer however. This term R/1 (Mrs

Schultz) and 1/2 (Miss Berzins) are rostered on, but

anyone can help at any time by donating a meal. If

you would like some ideas, there is a recipe book

available in the front office – just ask Anna or

Amanda if you can borrow a copy.

LLL Banking

A friendly reminder for students to be participating in the

LLL Student Banking. These accounts currently earn you

4.75% interest per annum (which is calculated on daily

balances and credited annually on May 31st). A perfect

time to be depositing the hard earned pocket money!

SELLING OF BAKED ITEMS AT NURIOOTPA AND TANUNDA THANK YOU so much to the P & F committee members and the parents, friends and teachers of St Jakobi who set up and sold baked items that were left over from the Air Show at trade stalls at Nuriootpa and Tanunda on Wednesday 4 May and Friday 6 May 2011. I think the word is out that we have fantastic bakers/cooks within our school/church community and people flocked to buy the delicious products. Thank you again to all the parents, grandparents and friends who baked such wonderful items for the Air Show. They certainly didn’t go to waste!!!! The profits from the trade stalls will go directly towards resources for our children. LYNDOCH LUTHERAN WOMENS FELLOWSHIP is holding its Annual Morning Tea on 1 June 2011 at 9:30am at St John Church Hall, Margaret Street, Lyndoch. All parents and friends of St Jakobi are invited to attend for a $5.00 donation on admission. Guest speaker for the morning will be Jenny Pfitzner from Australian Lutheran World Service. Please RSVP to Mrs Pat Eichler on 8524 4827 ASAP. All proceeds go towards ALWS. REQUEST FOR CATERING SUNDAY 12 JUNE 2011 We have been asked if the parents and friends of St Jakobi would be interested in catering for Ann Wilksch’s 60

th birthday party at

Bethany Reserve on Sunday 12 June 2011 (Sunday of long weekend). She requires us there from about 12noon to 4:30pm. Ann will have the food prepared and she would like four helpers to serve a hot lunch and afternoon tea. Ann is willing to pay $150 which is negotiable for our efforts. Jo Herrmann will be one of the helpers so we will require three more. Please let me know via email [email protected] or 0419 853 846 if you are available to help so that we can advise Ann if we can go ahead.

Thank you for your ongoing support of the P & F’s fundraising – without this support we couldn’t raise much needed funds for our children. Kind regards and blessings
