The science is clear, the science is settled, how dare you not accept the science. This makes out as if science is an unquestionable fact, as if we did not have any preconceptions when we want to address an issue. Alasdair Macintyre puts it in the following way What each observer takes himself or herself to perceive is identified and has to be identified by theory laden concepts. Perceivers without concepts, as Kant said, are blind. Empiricist philosophers have contended that common to the modern and the medieval observer is that which each really sees or saw, prior to all theory and interpretation, namely many small light patches against a dark surface; and it is at the very least clear that what both saw can be so described. Science is not neutral it is theory dependent. Scientists can never be completely objective, as scientist are persons and every individual has considerable personal involvement, commitment and interpretation. At this point you might think this is still just religious prejudice. The fact is just following the science is not the neutral ground it claims to be. The science is settled, science is clear, makes things so easy for us to have simple answers. There are a number of issues where our society deliberately ignores science. To illustrate I will discuss Abortion. Read the following from Maureen Condic a scientist who writes on when human life begins. Following the binding of sperm and egg to each other, the membranes of these two cells fuse, creating in the instant a single hybrid cell, the zygote or one cell embryo. Cell fusion is a well studied and very rapid event, occurring in less than a second. So science says at conception we have a new cell after one second. Condic concludes that the zygote comes into existence at the moment of conception. This new cell is genetically distinct from either parent. The embryo created is an organism that has developed the ability to sustain itself. Science tells us that human life begins at conception and yet if our parliament is to be believed this is not the case. They have legalized abortion and have not followed the science. People protesting climate change say that children are being killed by the climate emergency. There is no similar following of science by these protesters when it comes to abortion, where children are also killed. For Catholics John Paul II made our position clear in Evangelium Vitae paragraph 62 Therefore, by the authority which Christ conferred upon Peter and his Successors, in communion with the Bishops-who on various occasions have condemned abortion and who in the aforementioned consultation, albeit dispersed throughout the world, have shown unanimous agreement concerning this doctrine-I declare that direct abortion, that is, abortion willed as an end or as a means, always constitutes a grave moral disorder, since it is the deliberate killing of an innocent human being. This doctrine is based upon the natural law and upon the written Word of God, is transmitted by the Church's Tradition and taught by the ordinary and universal Magisterium. The issue of Abortion makes it much clearer that Science cannot answer every single question. Statements such as the science is settled are just undeveloped arguments for empiricism. This is why ideas that we now know to be scientifically false were believed to be true for very long periods of history. It takes courage to question the status quo and it is always easier to just conform to what other people say. Scripture gives us truth, science give theories that may or may not be true and we measure this empirically. Fr Andrew James Choir Practice on Monday at 7pm in the Church every fortnight.
