Many students find that getting a job after graduation is complicated because they don’t have suitable ‘experience’. Even when the stu-dents have had jobs it is likely that the jobs haven’t provided the experience that the employers are looking for. One way to gain that experience while still in school is to become active in student organizations. By being actively involved in student organizations, you can gain skills that you can use in career posi-tions later on. For example, you can do things like this:Develop annual budget and manage operations to meet that budget. Plan and implement special events. Work with other students, staff, and faculty to promote the well-being of students. Lead by developing consensus with people of divergent viewpoints. Maintain financial records of an organization to meet bank, school, and government regulations. Plan marketing campaign designed to attract members from a busy, diverse student body. Plan and conduct fund-raising events. Interface with corporate sponsors to obtain financial support. Plan and conduct training in a leadership conference. Create and maintain a website to further the goals of an organiza-tion. Use a variety of electronic communication channels to keep a far-flung membership in-touch and in-tune with the organization. Effectively manage meetings so that everyone is heard and the agenda is met. These are but a few of the skills that you can not only practice but that you can tell people about later. To get involved in a student or-ganization, look for meeting notices in the display cases and bulletin boards or drop by Room 200 to get all the info on what clubs are ac-tive and when they meet.

Pro Terra Nova was created by a group of DeVry students with the purpose of promoting environmental consciousness and responsibility among DeVry students, faculty, and staff.

“Students, we have to become aware, and be responsible of our every day ac-tions. The products we buy and the way we dispose of recyclable items.” Angeles Marquez (President)

“Our campus should set an example in our community, and should represent the values of its students by making it easier for everyone to recycle.” Becky Valentin (Student)

“Faculty should spread information and resources to students, so that eventually we can become knowledgeable consumers” Priti Agrawal (Student)

Recycling Facts: 75% of our trash can be recycled.Recycling all of your home's waste newsprint, cardboard, glass, and metal can reduce carbon dioxide emissions by 850 pounds a year.Making cans from recycled aluminum saves 95% of the energy required to produce cans from virgin material.Americans go through 25 billion plastic bottles every yearIf every household in the U.S. reused a paper bag for one shopping trip, about 60,000 trees would be saved. One ton of recycled paper saves 3,700 pounds of lumber and 24,000 gallons of water. Students Voice Out SuckerPunch: Movie Review by Alexander Ortiz

When I planned to see Zack Snyder’s (Director of 300 and Watchmen) next take on visual “awesomeness” a.k.a SuckerPunch, I really was just expecting that; “awesomeness”. And that’s exactly what I got.

Emily Browning and co. (Vanessa Hudgens, Abbie Cornish, Jena Malone, and Jamie Chung) retreat to their imaginations from the confines of a mental institution in order to escape it. The main character (Emily Browning), who we only know as BabyDoll, is sent to the mental institution by her abusive stepfather after her mother’s sudden death and her younger sister’s accidental killing. There she is immediately scheduled to have a lobotomy, yet before that could be done she “escapes” into a “new world”( It is here where we realize that we are indeed in her imagination) In this world, instead of an institution, it is a Brothel . There she meets four other “burlesque” girls, Rocket(Abbie Cornish), Sweet Pea(Jena Malone), Amber(Jamie Chung), and Blondie(Vanessa Hudgens). All of them hate the Brothel house owner and devise a plan to escape where we see executed in another one of BabyDoll’s new world(what we see when she “dances”) they must collect 5 items through various video game-like missions. After these 5 items are collected the girls alas should see freedom.

Overall I enjoyed the film. I knew from the start that I wasn’t going to get an Oscar win-ning, top of the line movie. No, all I was expecting from this movie was “Girls with Guns” and that’s exactly what I got. I was fed with a TON of cool visual action sequences ( who really cares if it made sense or not?) and I was given a simple escape story an elaborate twist. Were there parts I disliked? Yes. Does it matter? No. Because all the expectations that I had for the movie were fulfilled so I left the theater feeling satisfied and not cheaped out of my 9 dollars. This is Zack Snyder’s first original movie, and it couldn’t have been in better hands. He specializes in visual technique and delivers his unique style superbly. SuckerPunch further demonstrates his expertise in the visual aspects of storytelling. His storytelling may need some work but who cares? SuckerPunch is a visual action spectacle that really solidifies Snyder as a stylistic direc-tor. This movie is practically for anyone who just wants to have a fun time at the movies and see an action spectacle.

Who’s it for: Action Geeks, Fan-Boys, Gamers, Comic Book Nerds, Casual Movie-GoersWhat I liked About It: The action sequences(pure “awesomeness”), The video game references(such as Nazi Zombies, Warcraft, Halo, and Dragon Age) The uniqueness of it(The color and tone evoke a dark setting). And The Soundtrack(The lullaby version of “Sweet Dreams” in the opening sequence is FANTASTIC, as well as her “dancing” music gives mystery as to what time period the movie takes place)What I didn’t like About It: Too many slow-mo’s( I get it Snyder, you LOVE slow-mo, but to devote an entire 5 minute action sequence on it is a bit much). Not enough character growth(We see BabyDoll, Rocket, and Sweet Pea develop somewhat in their characters yet we see NONE in Amber and Blondie’s character’s(so why were there?)) And the ending(it dragged on a little too much(but like I said who cares?)Final Grade: B8

DeVry University’s Chicago AITP Student Chapter overcame many difficulties in order to attend the 2011 AITP National Collegiate Conference in Orlando, Florida. The student chapter had just been revived five months ago, but it had already grown in numbers to a staggering 50 members.

During the months of preparation and countless practice problems given to them by their faculty advisor and senior professor Astrit Mehmeti and other faculty advisors Nana Liu and Josie Ana-bogu, they set their sights on Orlando and the National Collegiate Conference. Even though they were only able to send a total of six members and one advisor, they competed fiercely.

In the end, their efforts paid off, and they did not come back empty handed. The team of Edward Rosenberg and Anthony Gasior received 2nd Place in Network Design and 3rd Place in Systems Analysis and Design. The team of Jae Hyung Ahn and Alexander Alberto received an honorable mention for their efforts in Systems Analysis and Design competition. Other strong efforts came from the team of Steven Ladas and Alexander Alberto in Database Design, as well as the team of Jae Hyung Ahn and Michael Dietrich in the Database Design competition.

Steven and Michael also competed individually in PC Troubleshooting and Java Development contests. Although not placing, they received much praise on the quality of work that was put in by various judges of the competition. Also, placing in the competitions wasn’t the only success of DeVry’s students. Many I.T. recruiters, professionals and speakers have complemented them on their level of professionalism, determination and preparedness. These six individuals have kick-started the student life at the Chicago Campus and have brought DeVry’s name back into the I.T. limelight at a national level.

Shake, shake, shake. Shake your booty!! DSAO wowed us with a nod to the funky styles of yester-year. On this particular March 16 2011 “Way back Wednes-day”, there was a collage of colorful, wacky, and fun styles that were rockin’ the retro fashions that defined the decades of their time. There was everything from Cab Caloway couture to disco fever jumpsuits, and afros galore. The event was spearheaded by Alex Chaidez, DSAO employee. He says “It is important to rec-ognize the contributions of the past and how they link with the trends of today’s modern fashion.” Along with snacks for the brave souls showcasing their funky styles, DSAO provided photos of each person in their “looks.” The event drew in a sizeable crowd of students and faculty alike and was a smashing success. Groovy!!
