Message from the Board of Directors

The response to the Spring issue of Deweygram was fantastic! We received tremendously positive feedback and are thrilled with the upsurge in new memberships that followed. This issue will continue to bring you Alumni, Faculty, and Dewey updates, plus information about JDAA activities including the 2014 Dewey Spirit Awards and the upcoming REUNION to celebrate the 45th Anniversary of the founding of John Dewey H.S. … and its continued survival. If you read the last issue of Deweygram and have been following our Facebook posts, you know that Dewey was once again threatened last year. The co-location proposal which was passed by the Panel on Education Policy – after strenuous opposition by the JDAA, the faculty, students and administration of JDHS, members of the local community, the District 21 Community Education Council, several NYC Councilmen and a member of the NYS Assembly, leading to lawsuits filed by the UFT and the Public Advocate – was withdrawn by the new administration of the Department of Education. (Our thanks to Mayor DiBlasio and Chancellor Fariña.) The strength of the opposition, and the number of alumni who participated, demonstrates that Dewey’s legacy is alive and well. The school’s programs still garner awards and national recognition for its students, as seen in the Spring issue’s “Dewey These Days” column. Although the original “Experiment in Education” has undergone many changes since its inception, the Dewey Spirit continues on. We hope you will join us on October 18, 2014 at John Dewey High School to celebrate that spirit. See our article below for information about the All-Class Reunion event. Volunteer for the Reunion Planning Committee by sending us an email at [email protected]. We have a number of subcommittees – outreach; public relations; food; entertainment; archives. We hope to have at least one Year Leader for each graduating class and one at least one outreach coordinator per geographical area. See inside for more information. As always, your feedback and input are welcome. We are your alumni association. Please tell us what you’d like to see, both here in the Deweygram and among the JDAA’s activities.

Alumni Updates

1972

Ann-Marie Bucaria Dake, proud member of the first full graduating class of 1972, has been residing in the San Francisco Bay Area since 1989. She received both BA and MA degrees

in American Literature/English from the City University of New York at Brooklyn College, and in 2013 received her Certification in Bioethics, with a specialization in Research Ethics, from Union Graduate College and The Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai. She is also a Certified Institutional Review Board Professional. Ann-Marie is the Program Manager of the Institutional Review Board, Human Research Protection Program, at Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory. She has been married for nearly 33 years and has two grown children, a son and a daughter.

1974

Susan Savodnick Epstein got her Bachelor’s Degree in Psychology from Brooklyn College in 1980 and subsequently returned to complete her certification requirements as an elementary school teacher. She then

went on to Teachers College to study Education of the Deaf and Hearing Impaired. She got her M.A. in Education in 1986, the same year she married her husband, Larry Epstein. They have one daughter, Dara, and a dog named Sandy. Dara, 23, is currently a theater major at Hunter College. Caring for the elderly Sandy has prompted Sue to become a stay-at-home mom. Her proudest accomplishment, she says, is returning to singing lessons in her old age. Sue and Larry live in Hightstown, New Jersey, but plan to move back to New York City as soon as they can.

1979 Deborah C. (Blejwas) Ashenfarb has worked with developmentally disabled individuals since 2002. She previously obtained a Bachelor’s degree in Spanish Literature and Secondary Education, and a Master’s in Secondary Education. She has worked as a Spanish teacher. She is married and has two grown sons, one who had given her a daughter-in-law and grandson and another, still single, who attends college.

1980 Adrienne Grande has been a practicing Physician Assistant for the past 20 years and was a biomedical

research coordinator for ten years prior to entering the field of clinical medicine. She has been active in the JDAA for the last five years and currently serves as Vice President. She helped plan the JDHS 40th

Anniversary Reunion in 2010 and is on the planning committee for the 45th Anniversary All-Class Event taking place this October. Adrienne resides in her beloved borough of Brooklyn and is the proud mother of Grace who is entering NYU this fall. She looks forward to seeing you at the JDHS 45th Anniversary Event on October 18, 2014!

1990 Eric Gonora worked in information technology for 15 years after earning his Bachelor’s Degree from SUNY Stony Brook. He then decided that the corporate grind was not for him, so he opened his own practice as a financial advisor. He also works part-time as an Emergency Medical Technician and says that helping people in their times of greatest need gives him tremendous satisfaction. Eric is the father of teenage twins, a boy and a girl, and lives in Freehold, New Jersey.

1992 Rose McGrath LaVista had a beautiful baby boy, Joseph James, in November 2013.

Faculty Updates

Martin Pasternak arrived at Dewey in 1986 to teach Social Studies. He specialized in American History and taught the Advance Placement American History class for eight years. For three years, he participated in the school’s peer mediation program. He retired from Dewey in 2000, but says that teaching is his passion and he will continue doing it as long as he has the will and the strength. He currently serves as an Assistant Professor of History at CUNY’s College of Staten Island where he teaches the required Core class, the American History sequence, and a special seminar on the American Civil War. He remembers his Dewey Days fondly, with particular affection for his students, many of whom he has continued to correspond with. The JDAA is investigating the possibility of booking blocks of hotel/motel rooms in the Brooklyn area for the reunion weekend (October 18-19). If there is sufficient interest, we hope to get discounted rates for our members. If you are traveling in from out of town and would be interested in participating in a group accommodation plan, please email us at [email protected]. Put “Reunion Accommodations Request” in the subject line and let us know:

(a) how many people will be in your party; (b) how many nights you wish to stay, (c) room/facility location restrictions or preferences; (d) any special room requirements you might have

(non-smoking; double beds; accessibility); and (e) suitable price ranges

Please note that many hotels/motels require a minimum room commitment for discounted rates. We will solicit room block bids once we have obtained a minimum of ten requests. Any discounts will be offered at the discretion of the hotel and subject to their booking requirements.

The JDAA is preparing displays of archival material, Dewey memorabilia, video footage, and other exhibits for our members to explore on the day of the reunion. Student and faculty artists are invited to show their work that day. Photographers, painters, sculptors, graphic artists, fashion designers, interior designers, architects, needle-crafters, and all other creators are welcome to display samples of their work in the school. (The sale of such items may be conducted at the discretion and responsibility of the artist.) If you are interested in displaying your talent, please email us at [email protected]. Put “Artist Display Request” in the subject line and let us know:

(a) The type of art work you will display (b) Your space requirements (c) Any lighting or electrical needs

Each artist must provide whatever display materials (e.g. easels, computers) are necessary to exhibit his/her artwork. The JDAA cannot accept responsibility for the safety and security of any artwork on display.

DDEEWWEEYY TTTHHHEEESSSEEE DDAAYYSS Dewey Teacher Receives ‘Inspirational High School Educator’ Award Chung Chan of Brooklyn, NY, motivates his students to achieve great success. Chan is one of four recipients of this year’s Clarkson University Inspirational High School Educator Award. The history and economics teacher at John Dewey High School in Brooklyn, New York was nominated by former student Wuli Liu, a senior electrical engineering honors program major at Clarkson. Each year, Clarkson asks its seniors to nominate the secondary school educators who have significantly affected their lives and helped guide their higher education and career decisions. The award recognizes these educators for their lasting impact on their students and in their fields of education. Liu said that it was an honor to nominate Chan for his hard work and sacrifice, and that he changed her life. Without him, she says, she doesn’t think she would have come to Clarkson. “I came to the U.S. when I was 15 and went to school in Brooklyn,” said Liu. “I knew only that English had 26 letters and that my new environment was scary. In Mr. Chan’s classes, I learned American and World History – and how to adapt to a very different culture.

“He stressed the importance of attending college and recommended schools outside New York City as ‘the best way to know more about America.’ And then he helped me prepare. “He gave me free SAT tutoring, he checked my essays written for other classes and for college applications. He was my consultant and counselor. And he was always there for me and other students, too. … Now, because of Mr. Chang, I’m a graduating senior who’s been offered a full-time job in engineering. “The best educator cares about his students’ futures;; he inspires them and helps them reach their full potential. “Mr. Chan, you helped me understand the American dream. You set the foundation to achieve my dreams. My accomplishments honor you.” Editor’s Note: This article was excerpted from The Clarkson University News, April 30, 2014. JDAA ELECTION NEWS NOMINATIONS REMAIN OPEN FOR THE 2014-2015 JDAA DIRECTORS

The election of the 2014-2015 John Dewey Alumni Association Board of Directors will take place on October 18, 2014 at the Annual Meeting of the General Membership during the 45th Anniversary Reunion Event. Members who will not be in attendance at the reunion may vote by proxy. A proxy form will be made available at our website thirty days before the election, and announcements will go out by email, Facebook, and Twitter when the form has been posted.

We hope you will make your voice heard. This is your alumni association and your opinion counts! Nominations are still being accepted from any member who wishes to run for a seat on the Board of Directors for the upcoming term of office. If you wish to serve on the Board, send us an email at [email protected] and put “Election/Nomination” in the subject line. Here is some information about the nominations process: 11

Eligibility Requirement: Nominees must be members of the JDAA (either alumni or faculty). If you are not an active member, you may join for free at our website: www.johndeweyalumni.org/become-a-member-of-jdaa There is NO requirement that you live in the NYC area. All members may serve from their home location and attend monthly meetings by telephone, Skype, or other remote access. The Role of the Directors is decision-making and governance of the organization. In that capacity, we work toward our mission of keeping the Dewey experience & legacy alive, continuing a relationship with the school, fostering connections between alumni, and maintaining an archive for the benefit of our members. Within that framework, we elect officers to handle specific duties and organize committees to conduct the programs and activities approved by the Board. Candidates run for general Director roles. After the Board is elected by the general membership, its members elect the officers – President; Vice President; Secretary; and Treasurer – from among their number. Committee members do not need to sit on the Board. The duties of the Board members vary based on their committee activities and any leadership roles they assume. At the most basic level, all directors commit to attending the monthly meetings called by the JDAA President, either in person or by means of electronic communications, ten months per year.

As an all-volunteer organization, we understand the need to balance the competing needs of life, so we make every effort to accommodate a variety of schedules by rotating days of the week and locations of the meetings, and/or holding telephone conference calls, and/or arranging for Skype participation when possible. All meetings are held in Brooklyn, New York, but members may participate remotely by telephone or most electronic viewing applications (e.g. Skype, Hangouts). The rewards of participation include having a voice in alumni activities, engaging with others who share your ongoing enthusiasm for Dewey and its legacy, promoting events that bring graduates together, and helping shape the direction of our organization. The term of office for the newly-elected Board will run until September 2015. The number of director positions is currently set at eight, but this may change as a result of a vote of the General Membership at our annual meeting in October. To submit your candidacy, please send your name, graduating class (or faculty department), and a brief biography to [email protected]. Please indicate Election Candidate in the subject line. Please note: If you wish to nominate someone else for a Board of Directors seat, please obtain his/her consent first.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- AUDIT COMMITTEE NOMINEES WANTED

The JDAA By-Laws establish an ongoing committee to ensure the preparation of an annual treasurer’s report and to review it for compliance with ethical and regulatory requirements. The Committee may call for an audit of any fiduciary practices or irregularities. This Committee requires three members (not including the JDAA Treasurer) and fulfills only one duty annually. To run for a seat on the Audit Committee, please submit your candidacy as indicated above.
