CHAPTER I
INTRODUCTION
1.1 Background of the study
Literature is a term used to describe written or spoken material. Broadly speaking,
“ literature “ is used to describe anything from creative writing to more technical or
scientific works, but the term is most commonly used to refer to works of the
creative imagination , including works of poetry , drama, fiction, and nonfiction (
Esther Lombardi : 2015 ). Literature is general writing value works of art, especially
plays, poem, and novels (Hornby: 2005).
Novel is a story which tells about someone life. Novels do not, however,
present a documentary picture of life. Alongside the fact that novels look at people
in society, the other major characteristic of the genre is that novels tell a story. In
fact, novels tend to tell the some few stories time and time. The source or the
inspiration of writing novel can be a based on true story. Their true story retelling
in a story that we call as life experience. This true story more reliable than the other
that which based on imagination. It is because the second one sometime could not
happen in real life.
The novel is genre of fiction, and fiction maybe defined as the art or craft of
contriving, through the written word, representations of human life that instructor
divert or both. The various forms that fiction may take are best seen less as a number
of separate categories than as a continuum or more accurately, a cline, with some
such brief forms as the anecdote at one end of the scale and the longest conceivable
novel at the other. When any piece of fiction is long enough to constitute a whole
book, as opposed to a mere part of a book, then it may be said to have achieved
novel hood. But this state admits of its own quantitative categories, so that a
relatively brief novel may be termed a novella and a very long novel may overflow
the banks of a single volume and become a river novel. Length is very much one of
the dimensions of the genre (Britannica: 1962). The novel is a type of literary work
written in a narrative that contains certain conflicts in the life stories of the
characters in the story.
In literature, all stories must have certain characteristics or elements. Without
these elements, any piece of literature would cease to make sense or serve a purpose.
For example, character. Character can be defined as any person, animal, or figure
represented in a literary work. There are many types of characters that exist in
literature, each with its own development and function. Character as one of the
most important factors in story. Character is one of the attributes or features that
make up and distinguish an individual (Merriam-Webster: 1828). Character is the
personality or the part an actor represents in a play; a role played by an actor in a
play (Lynch:2012).
A Walk to Remember is a novel by American writer Nicholas Sparks,
released in October 1999. The novel, set in 1958–1959 in Beaufort, North Carolina,
is a story of two teenagers who fall in love with each other despite the disparity of
their personalities. A walk to remember is a novel that shows bad and good moral
character. Bad and good moral is one of characteristics that existing in human being.

THEORETICAL BACKGROUND
2.1 Previous study
Varamedina (2017) Universitas Pasundan Institutional Repositories & Scientific
journals on her thesis entitled “ An Analysis of Moral Value in Dicken’s Oliver
Twist”. She presents many moral values conveyed through the main character
which is Oliver Twist. She uses the Theory of moral value by Burhan Nurgiyantoro,
she tells about Oliver Twist who is tough to face everything in this world, oliver is
an orphan who is born in a workhouse but he has good attitude toward people
around him. He has the attitude that can conform in many situations and conditions.
Titisari ( 2012 ) STAIN Salatiga, also analyzed the same topic in telling the moral
value on her thesis entitled “The Analysis of Moral Value in King’s Speech Movie”
she uses the theory of Hornby (2010) She finds the moral values likes religiosity,
responsibility, optimism, honesty, bravery, altruism, happiness, love and affection,
freedom, humbleness. While the moral educationsare believe in god and all his
provisions, honest and trustworthy to the leader, parent and others, no quarrel in
daily live to create a harmonious live, humbleness/ respecting others, showing
respect and love.
For this research, the title is “The Analysis of Moral Values in A Walk to Remember
novel Written by Nicholas Sparks”. In this research the writer used qualitative
method, the source of data obtained for this research are from journals, articles, and
websites. The result of this study show the moral values contained in each character
in this novel. The writer found nine kinds of moral values such as Bravery, Honesty,
Steadfastness, Sympathetic to other, Cooperativeness, Thankfulness, Kind-hearted,
Trustworthiness, Love and Affection.
2.2 Literature
In modern times literature position is increasing and increasingly important.
Literature not only provides inner pleasure and satisfaction, but also as a means of
conveying moral messages to the public over social reality.
According to Hornby (2000) literature is the way of expressing human’s
feeling, thought, imagination and experience by writing. Literature is pieces of
writing that are valued as works of art, especially novels , plays or drama, and
poems. literature is a medium for expressing the
thoughts of the author. literature is imaginative, aesthetic and pleasing to the reader.
This is in line with the opinion of Damono (1984: 1), that literature was created by
authors or writers to be enjoyed, understood, and utilized by society in life.
Millar (1970:18) says it also increases human being’s knowledge or insight,
enrich their spirits and make them more civilized. It can help them comprehend
other people’s condition and qualities. Therefore, literature helps human being
grow, both personally and intellectually. It provides an objective base for
knowledge and understanding. It links them with the broader cultural, philosophic,
and religious world of which they are a par.
From the definition above, the writer concluded that literature is one of
works of art that show creative imagination from the authors, it can be fiction or
non fiction. The reader can read the creative imagination and it can increase
knowledge and experiences about human problems including values, morals,
cultures and human interest.
2.3 Character and Characterization
2.3.1 Character
In literary works, the writer creates character and characterization. A character is a
human who can think, speak, and do in literary work such as novel, movie and
drama. As Webber (2006:95) an individual’s character is that person’s collection of
character traits, and these can be defined as relatively stable dispositions to think,
feel and behave in certain way and certain situation. Two traditional examples are
bravery and cowardly, the dispositions to think, feel and behave in a brave or
cowardly manner in the face of real or apparent danger. Other, more restricted
examples might be being talkative at lunch or nervous at office parties. Exactly
what is and what is not to count as a character traits, of course, depends on which
account of the nature of character is to be accepted, and that is a matter of debates.
But all sides agree that a trait must be relatively enduring: one cowardly act does
not a coward make, as Aristotle observed, just as one swallow does not make a
spring. Another definition character are the persons presented in works of narrative
or dream who convey their personal qualities through dialogue and action by which
the reader or audience understands their thoughts, feelings, intention and motives.
( As defined by the University of Victoria).
2.3.2 Characterization
Characterization in literature is the process authors use to improve the characters
and create images of the characters for the audience. Another definition
characterization is the process by which the writer reveals the personality of a
character. The writer introduces the character with noticeable emergence and the
following the introduction of the character, the writer always talks about his
attitude, then as the story progress, the though process of the character. Then next
level the character expressing his opinion, idea and getting into conversation with
other characters. At the end the writer will show how the other in the story respond
to the character’s personality.
2.4 Novel
Novel is one of the art from literature. A novel is a relatively long work of narrative
fiction, normally written in prose form, and which is typically published as a book.
Comparing to the movie, novel can get lots of chances to think, A novel calls for us
to use our imagination to visualize what is going on in the book. Nurgiyantoro
(2010: 10) argues that novels are works of fiction built by building elements,
namely intrinsic elements and extrinsic elements. The novel is also interpreted as a
prose-shaped essay that contains a series of stories of someone's life with others
around him by highlighting the character and nature of the perpetrator.
2.4.1 The intrinsic elements of the novel
In order to complete this research, the writer would like to give a brief definiton and
explanation about the intrinsic element in a novel. The intrinsic elements that
consist of Theme, plot, character, setting and point of view are the elements that are
participating in forming a story in literary work.
a. Theme
Staton (2007:7) was stated that theme gives a strong explained about the
unity of what is happening in the story, and tell about the story of life in common
context. The purpose of theme is to give a shape and effect in our mind, so make
the story easy to remember. A good theme has to represent the entire story in the
novel. Sometimes the theme shapes in to the fact that comes from the human
experience. It is explored by the story and then gives impression for each of event
in life.
b. Plot
Plot is important element of literary work, because the plot tells the
important event that occur in a story.
Staton (2007:26) was stated that plot is a series of the events in a story. How
a certain events affecting another events that cannot be ignored, since the events
will be affecting for all the story. Plot is very close to existence of the character. If
the story only has a little in character, there will be more close and simple to plot,
in contrast a novel that has many character in the story the plot will be more
complicated. Plot also helps the reader in understanding the story of the novel. The
clarity of the plot makes the reader easier in understanding the story. Usually a good
or popular novels uses simple plot. So the strength of the novel also depend on the
plot.
The existence of the plot itself depends on two essential events:
1. Conflict
Conflict is a dramatic thing which direct to the competition between two
balance powers and show actions reaction. Conflict brings out the extremes of
human energy, causing characters engage in the decision, action responses and
interactions that make up most stories.
2. Climax
Climax is the highest point of interest, the moment when the conflict is most
intense. The time when the consequences of the character’s action become
inevitable and the main points of the plot merge.
c. Character
Character is one of the interesting things for personal opinions that the
readers want to see how is the other people life and how they effort to pursue the
goals.
Character also a vehicles for the author in order to convey to the reader about her
or his view of the world. The reader can learn about individual characters from their
own words and action, from what other characters said about them and the way
others act towards them. Character in a novel can be differentiated in to several
kinds based on point of view, a character can be categorized in to several at once,
for example as main character protagonist and character antagonist.
1. Protagonist
According to Altenberd and Lewis (1966:56) protagonist is a character who
is admired by the readers, which always called as a hero, because she or he always
does ideal role, follows the rules, and values in the society. The readers often give
sympathy to the protagonist character.
2. Antagonist
According to Luxemburg (1992:145) antagonist is the opposite character of
protagonist either physically and psychologically. The antagonist character usually
causes conflict for protagonist.
According to Foster (1927) in his book “Aspects of the novel” characters
are divided into two types, among others:
1. Flat character
According to Bernardo (2001) flat character is the opposite of a round
character. This literary personality is notable for one kind of personality trait or
characteristic.
2. Rounded character
According to Karen (2001) a rounded character is anyone who has a
complex personality, he or she is often portrayed as a conflicted and contra
dictionary person.
d. Setting
Hamalian (1967:59) was stated that the setting is not only a particular time
and a particular place, or a very substance of a region, but also how the people
things, how they react, their prejudices, their insanities, and their lifestyle with all
elements that related indirectly. Setting also includes the background: aspect at
atmosphere, a series of details, nuances which give a certain shape to theme and
plot. The elements of setting can be differentiated into three principles elements:
setting of place, setting of time, and setting of society.
a. Setting of place
According to Wellek and Warren (1956:131) setting of place direct to the
location where the event happened in a story. Each place must have their
characteristic.
b. Setting of time
According to Wellek and Warren (1956:131) setting of time is related to the
problem of when the event happens in a story. The problem of when is usually
connected with factual time, that has connection with historical events.
c. Setting of social environment
According to Wellek and Warren (1956:131) setting of social direct to the
problem which are related to the behavior of social life in certain place and certain
time in a novel. Social setting has connection with the system of social life that
contains many problem in complex scope: it can be habits, costumes, religion,
ideology and the way of thinking.
2.5 Moral
Moral is the doctrine of good and bad is generally accepted, concerning actions,
attitudes and obligations. Moral form includes unlimited problems. Covers all
issues of life and life, all problems that cover human dignity. Literary works created
by the author must contain certain values that will be conveyed to the reader, for
example moral values. The reader is expected to be able to find and retrieve this
value. Nurgiyantoro (2009: 320) states that moral stories are usually intended as a
suggestion related to certain moral teachings that are practical.
it is a clue which was deliberately given by the author about various matters relating
to behavior and social manners. Moral is something that the author wants to convey
to the reader, which is the meaning contained in a literary work and the meaning
suggested by the story (Nurgiyantoro, 2009: 321).
Based on “Webstren World Dictionary of American Language (1828)”
moral is thing that related with skill to decide right and wrong of behavior that
accepted by citizen. In “Kamus Besar Bahasa Indonesia” it is said moral is deciding
good or bad considered behavior. Morality according to Bentham is art to maximize
happiness, it can be seen by achieveing the existence of happy and joyful life of all
people.(Hazlitt,2003:109). A morality is sacrifice from little goodness to big
goodness.(Hazlitt,2003:111). According to Stemberg (1994:938), morality refers to
concern with what is good or right in people’s each other. A key to understanding
morality is to be specific about definition of good or bad and right or wrong.
2.5.1 Moral values
Moral value is value that must be separated with other values. Every value will get
quality if it has relation with other values. For example, honesty is example of moral
values, this value has no meaning if it does not be applied with other values.
Economic value relate with purpose value, (Rosyadi,2004:123). Loyalty is moral
value, but it must be applied with other, humanity value for general, for example,
love of husband and wife. (Bertens,2004:142)
2.5.2 Characteristics of moral values
Based on Bertens (1997:144) theory, there are four characteristics of moral values,
thus are:
1. Relating to the person’s responsibility
Moral values concerns with the human’s personality which has
responsibility. It causes that person is guilty or not because he is responsible. It is
created within the actions which become his duty. Human being himself is as a
source of his moral values (Bertens, 1997: 144)
2. Concerning to one’s inner self
This values produces “voice” from the one’s inner self. It will accuse us if
we against it and praise if we bring this values to the reality (Bertens, 1997: 144)
3. Making obligation
Moral values has absolute obligation which cannot be bargained. Immanuel
Kant (1724-1804) as a German philosopher argues that moral values contains
imperative category. It means that we are obliged to do something without
requirements. It is applied to human being as a root of humanity. Human is hoped
to perform the moral values. It is impossible that someone chooses some moral
values and refuses the others, for example, someone receives honesty and loyalty
as the values in his life but rejects justice. Therefore, all the people should accept
all of the standards of behaviour. (Bertens, 1997: 145-146)

reminds him of my mother. It would be terrible if the play was
a failure this year, especially since I am involved. But the real
reason I am asking is because of my father. He is such a good
