EMERGING NEEDS OF THE INDIAN CONSTRUCTION INDUSTRY

It has been generally reported that buildings

worldwide consume about 40% of the

planet’s material resources and 30% of its

energy. It is evident therefore, that building

activity contributes significantly to global

ecological degradation. If we want to protect

our future, there are no other options than

to achieve ways that increase the service

life of the buildings, reduce damage to the

environment, maintain the health of the eco

system and cover our natural resources.

The requirements listed above are particularly relevant for a country like ours that covers 3.29 million sq. km.

of land area and has over 1.3 billion people. This demands unprecedented levels of infrastructure development with diverse

types of construction. On top of this, one should recognise the climatic diversity of the country and its vast coastline.

In order to assist professionals to face the above challenges a novel institutional framework appears essential,

notwithstanding the existence of a large number of research bodies as well as other industry associations.

Perceiving this, the Dr. Fixit Institute of Structural Protection and Rehabilitation (DFI-SPR) was conceived in 2001 under the

promotional umbrella of Pidilite Industries Ltd. It was seen not to be in conflict with existing institutions in the country. On

the contrary, it was conceived to synergise and be a supplement to these institutions. DFI-SPR started its activities in 2002,

although it was registered as a stand-alone not-for-profit company under Section 25 of the Indian Companies Act, 1956, in

June 2006.

Distance Education Programme

One Year Certificate Programme on “Waterproofing & Repair Management of Buildings”

Introduction

Built environment normally has to undergo a substantial extent of distress and decay throughout its lifetime. If proper care is taken by right quality waterproofing and execution methodologies during its construction and adequate maintenance practices post construction, buildings should survive for the enjoyment of many generations. This Programme is designed to provide adequate skills and expertise required to deal with all the important aspects of waterproofing, repair, restoration, renewal engineering and building construction maintenance management.

Programme Duration & Design

The Programme duration is 12 months. The programme design is modular which involves 2 modules, 2 contact workshops, assignments and 2 term end examination.

Eligibility

1. Diploma in any branch of Engineering OR2. Non-Engineering graduate with 2 years work experience in construction.

IndustriesIndustrial buildings encounter special types of problems, some emanating from the manufacturing processes being undertaken which may use chemicals or yield products severely harmful to structures. We have been involved in specifying materials or material treatments for specialist applications to enhance the design and provide improved performance. Refineries, fertilizer plants, chemical plants and other industrial structures deteriorate due to severe exposure conditions. We specialize in NDT testing and provide guidance for repair and rehabilitation of those structures.

Real EstateThe developers of large scale projects normally have high expectations in respect of speed and cost effectiveness – a scenario that can lead to in-built deficiencies if sufficient relevant expertise is not injected at the right stages. Once the project is completed, we can provide assistance to the owner in maintaining his property through planned preventative maintenance. These services are provided to developers, architects, engineers, project managers and contractors; the

role may vary but the aim for quality & value continues.

InfrastructureWe carry out the condition assessment of structures for bridges, flyovers, culverts, roadways & pavements etc.

Community BuildingsPublic buildings, whilst incorporating high levels of safety and durability, are often designed and constructed to very tight budget constraints. Our post-construction activities have included functions as varied as appraisal of failures and repair solutions as well as the resolution of numerous water leakage problems.

Construction segments to utilise the services

Quality & Integrity testing for Construction Industry

Control Testing Generally required by the contractor or concrete

producer to indicate adjustments required at sites.

Compliance TestingGenerally required by the site engineer to judge compli-

ance with the specification.

Assessment of In-Situ Quality and IntegrityRequired when there is doubt about the reliability of

control or when there is damage and deterioration of

concrete, or when there is a proposal for change of

usage or extension of structure.

Services Offered by ADL

• Structural Audit (Building / Infrastructure) and Advisory Services

• Non-Destructive Testing and Partial Destructive Testing

• Leakage Detection Services

• Petrography and chemical analysis

3Diagnostic & Advisory Services

Advanced Diagnostic & Advisory Service Centre for Concrete Structur

“NABL Accredited Laboratories for NDT & Chemical Testing as per ISO/IEC :17025 : 2005”

The Advanced Diagnostic Laboratory (ADL) has been

created with a blend of conventional and advanced in-

situ testing facilities in such a manner that there is a wide

choice for test methods, the extent and location of the

tests and the way in which the results are interpreted.

The prime objective is to ensure that the test results are

precise and accurate, which are often not so in non-de-

structive or semi-destructive testing carried out by

various agencies.

Page 13: DFI-SPR Brochure

Laboratory Testing

The need for testing frequently arises as an essential

component of a wider exercise which can involve

product development, product selection, quality

control, condition appraisal or failure analysis. Physical,

mechanical and chemical testing of concrete. Services

include performance test on waterproofing membrane

such as water permeability and hydrostatic pressure

resistance test.

Petrographic Examination

The highly experienced team with the help of modern

microscopic facilities conducts detailed examinations

of concrete, stone and other building materials in order

to predict their behaviour and where necessary to

investigate defects and causes of failure. Petrographic

examinations of concrete are typically performed when

problems arise during construction phase or premature

failure of an existing concrete structure occurs.

Petrographic examinations are also performed as part

of a condition study to determine if a concrete structure

needs to be replaced or if it can be rehabilitated.

Other Specific Tests

• Water Soluble Chloride Content

• Acid Soluble Sulphates Content

• Carbonation

• Determination of pH

• Water permeability test

• Hydrostatic Pressure Resistance Test

Advisory Services

We provide for the following advisory services :

• The current condition of concrete

• The causes of distress in concrete

• Whether the deterioration will continue

• Amount of damage to be expected in continuing deterioration

• Repair and waterproofing

Non-Destructive Testing Facilities

• Schmidt rebound hammer test

• Ultrasonic pulse velocity test

• Crack monitoring with crack microscope

• Half-cell potential test

• Resistivity of concrete & Rate of corrosion measurement by Galvanostatic Pulse method Rebar mapping by Electromagnetic profometer

• Infra red thermograph to detect the source of leakage

• In-situ compressive strength of concrete by extracting core samples

• Diagnosis of causes of concrete deterioration

• Condition assessment of buildings

Port and Marine StructuresDue to offshore locations deterioration of these structures is very fast. We do NDT and consultancy services for repair, rehabilitation and protection measures for durability.

Housing SocietiesLarge number of buildings in housing societies deteriorate due to poor maintenance. We do condition assessment of those buildings and guide the society for repair and maintenance of their structures.
