Activity:Usingaerialimagerytofindoutmoreaboutlandmarksandlandscapes
Introduction
Landmarksaresignificantfeaturesinthelandscape.Theymightbenationallyandinternationallysignificantsuchasforexample,London’sBuckinghamPalace,Edinburgh’sArthur’sSeatorCaernarvon’sCastle,oralandmarkmightjusthaveregionalorlocalsignificance.Alandmarkmightbeabuiltfeaturesuchasthe‘AngeloftheNorth’sculptureoraphysicalfeaturesuchasapeak,lakeorridge.Nomatterwhereyouliveinthecountry,therewillbelandmarksnearyouwitheithernationaland/orlocalsignificance.Recognisinganddescribingnationalandlocallandmarksisagoodactivityforyoungchildrentoengagewithwhenlearningtointerpretaerialimagesandmaps:theycanprovideacommonframeofreferencewhenmovingawayfromthefamiliarschoolgroundsandlocalarea.

ThreelandmarkswithnationalsignificanceforGreatBritainandalsomoreparticularly,toEngland,WalesandScotlandhavebeenchosenhere.Youmightselecttodooneoftheactivitiesorallthree.Youcouldalsodevelopyourownenquiryforyourownselectedlandmarks,someofwhichmightbechosenbecauseoftheirspecialsignificancetochildrenintheirownlocality.
