  • DIABETES MELLITUS

  • DEFINITIONDiabetes mellitus (DM) is a metabolic disorder characterized by chronic hyperglycaemia due to defects in insulin secretion and/or insulin action.

  • EPIDEMIOLOGYThe worldwide prevalence of DM has risen dramatically over the past two decades, from an estimated 30 million cases in 1985 to 285 million in 2010. Based on current trends, the International Diabetes Federation projects that 438 million individuals will have diabetes by the year 2030.The prevalence of type 2 DM is rising much more rapidly, presumably because of increasing obesity, reduced activity levels as countries become more industrialized, and the aging of the population. There is considerable geographic variation in the incidence of both type 1 and type 2 DM

  • MEDICAL MANAGEMENTDM TYPE 1 Goal of therapy is to maintain euglycemia during most part of the day by aggressive insulin therapy. This is done to rest the damaged islet cells and to induce remission.DM TYPE 2 1. Diet Planning, 2. Exercise, 3. Drug Therapy
