..Dear Congressman Hopk'ns:
As you may recall, last summer during one of your trips ta-theGeorgetown Courthouse we"discussed both nuclear waste legislationand the Zimmer nuclear plant on the Ohio Hiver in Moscow, Ohio.l am grateful 4o you that you later voted or a good nuclear wastemanagement bill, 23, 7g8. Now I am hoping that you will likewisedo your best'oout Zimmer.

Nr. Applegate alleges that a common joke among pipefitters atZimme is that they plan to be hundreds o miles away when theplant begins operation, so sure are ti ey that a caiastrophicaccident is likely. Georgetown is approximately forty-six milesfrom the p ant, Lexington approximately fifty-eight. Please helpmake sure that the Huc3.ear Hegulatory Commission investi-ation cfZimme now underway is thorough and tha., if necessa y, aCongressional investigation will take place.
Sincerely,
.Grave allegat ons of mismanagement, criminal activities on thesite,. and safety defects have been brought against the plant. The history of the charges made by a Mr. Thomas Applegate issummarized in the pages from a newsletter of a cii'zens'roup inCincinnati, which I enclose. Nr. Applegate has recently beensupported by the - ~ .. . ' „'« ~ ~ ~ i 'tute
which has begun an independent investigationof the plant and has found witnesses who have sworn to furtheralarming p oblems, including control rods that are too big for thechannels through whicn they mus~ slide to slow down a reaction,
', cable trays so overloaded that caole may overheat and. catch fire, andweakness in the walls of the suppression pool.
