and another from Chef Bobbys Blue Team will ultimately succumb to the challenges of Boot Campweek after week as they compete for $25,000 and bragging rights for their coach.

Check back with FN Dish every Sunday after the episode for the first interviews with the latesteliminated contestants to read their exclusive reflections on the competition, thoughts on difficultchallenges, plans for the future and more.

After choosing recruits to represent her on the Red Team, Chef Anne challenged them to recreate hermeat-and-potatoes-style dish of pan-seared pork chops and new potatoes in just one hour andwithout the assistance of a microwave. Each contestant battled his or her own kitchen demons likeonions and sharp knives, but not all of them overcame them. Photographer Diana De Rosa andchiropractor Dr. Bob Schaefer offered the most disappointing plates of the day, presenting Chef Annewith a dish that lacked sauce and was exceptionally greasy, respectively. In the end, however, theRed Team said goodbye to Diana on account of her inability to serve every component, and she leftthe competition believing that shes still one of the Worst Cooks in America.

Was there one element of Boot Camp that particularly surprised you?

DD: I didnt know what to expect so everything was a surprise, from the huge kitchen with all thosesupplies to meeting the other recruits to the way we were living and so on. I have to say that puttingsalt on the outside of the meat was something that I was totally clueless about.

You said that your Oatmeal and QuinoaFruit Surprise is one of the few thingsyou cook. Quinoa isnt the mostmainstream ingredient and its beenknown to trip up even experienced at-home cooks. Whats the story behindyour signature dish?

DD: I am into a healthy lifestyle and I heardthat quinoa has protein in it. I am not avegetarian but I often eat like one just becauseI happen to like vegetables, fruit, nuts, etc. So,I try to think of ways to eat more proteinbecause I have been anemic in the past. Icook it overnight, so I just put the oatmeal, quinoa, raisins, cinnamon (also very good foryou) and cut-up fruits in the slow cooker. I let itcook and by the morning I have my oatmealmush (as I refer to it since it tends toovercook), hot and ready to eat. Im pretty easyto please so even food that isnt cooked justright tastes pretty good to me.

Its really embarrassing to know how old I am and not know how to cook, you toldBobby and Anne during tasting. Has being on the show inspired you to learn how tocook?

DD: Of course watching those two chefs toss out a meal was what I really loved and thats what Iwant to be able to go into the kitchen and not stress over how to cook something. So yes, they trulydid inspire me. I want to learn how to cook but I was really hoping that Id have more time on theshow to get more of the basics. Im not a read-the-book-type person. The best way I learn is fromhaving someone show me what to do, which is exactly how they did it on this show. But then I onlyhad one chance, which wasnt quite enough to go back home and actually have gained enoughknowledge to cook. Having the chance to learn from the best of the best (albeit only one time) wassomething I will always cherish though.

Is there one kitchen skill in particular that you wish you could have masteredbefore you left?

DD: Cutting with a knife. Anne showed us but I found that very difficult and ended up cutting myself.

After the elimination, you said that youbelieve youre still the Worst Cook inAmerica and that youd be interestedin competing again on Season 5. If youwere to join the contest again, wouldyou prepare for the competitiondifferently? How so?

DD: I would love to come back for Season 5.Its actually my hope and dream to be givenanother chance (and my mom and dad wouldthank Food Network from heaven, I am sure). Iwas pretty devastated to have it confirmed that

I was truly the Worst Cook in America. The problem with me is that that I dont cook at all. So, I fail atanything I try to cook because I dont have a clue about what to do. All the other people on the show, except maybe Dr. Bob, had cooked before and so they are comfortable around a kitchen. But for me Idont even know where to begin. So, I might start by trying to better understand the terminology andthe different pots and pans. I was totally at a loss just trying to figure out those things. I think I alsoshould have remembered to have a check-off list. As soon as I realized I forgot to put in the oneingredient, I knew that would get me eliminated. My heart sunk while I was standing there from thatpoint on because I knew it would take a miracle for me to not be eliminated. To this day I stress overthat simple but stupid mistake. I had cooked the sauce and was just waiting until the last minute topour it over the food so the food wouldnt be too cold. I should have prepared the meal sooner andmaybe I would have caught my mistake, and I should have had a check-off list. Id also spend sometime trying to use the knife the way Anne showed us. And Ill watch more of the other Food Networkshows to see if I can pick up anything. Once you are in that kitchen and the pressure is on its prettyscary, but I really do want another chance and am hoping Food Network gives me that chance.

I love the food network and I usually watch another network in this time slot. I found my newfavorite Sunday night show. I really feel bad for how clueless these folks are. But it's it in good fun. Ihope they give DD a shot at season 5.

Mike just wanted to say thanks for the vote to give me another shot. Sorry I wasn't veryentertaining with my cooking but I am a trier and I'd really like a chance to at least do betterthan being the first one to be eliminated.

I do hope that Diana gets another chance. I also hope that she doesn't feel that she's hopeless inthe kitchen. Maybe she can take baby steps like practice cutting her fruit and vegetables using theknife skills that Chef Anne taught them. Also, maybe she can use photography and food artistry tospark something and inspire her to be more involved in the kitchen. I wish her the best.

Thank you for all these kind words. I truly have to learn how to use a knife. It's one thing to beshown and another to use it.

Hi This is Diana, I was quite sad not to make it more than one week. My hope is that I do get a shot in Season 5and I appreciate that all of you are taking the time to comment on the show - good or bad. I know itseems weird that we don't know how to cook, but trust me we have talents as writers, photographers, dancers, parents and so much more, but we truly fail in the kitchen. I was hoping tolearn a bit more because Anne was a great teacher. As short as it was, I had a great time on thisshow and appreciate everyone who is taking the time to follow us. I'll be watching all of theepisodes and seeing how my new friends faired.

    Reply

Nothing weird about not knowing how to cook any more than not knowing how to do a lot ofthings. If no one shows you, learning is hard. Cooking is a combination of skills. It is very visualas you need to be able to see what something should look like. You also need to understandhow your palate works and what something should taste like. It is also knowing whatmeasurements are, the differences between liquid and solid measures, how to use gadgets, howto read recipes and understanding perhaps a bit of science to learn the "whys" of food. It'sfreaking hard...take it from someone who is self taught and did not have any formal instructionuntil much, much later in life.

Great comment as this is exactly what was making it so difficult for me. Understanding justthe basics made it very difficult for me to pull it all together. Loved your comment. Thanks fortaking the time to add your thoughts.

I would love to compete in a show like that because I can cook

If you are a good cook, you'd not want to compete in this show. Maybe Bobby Flay's DinnerBattle. Bobby Flay comes to three different houses for dinner and the cooks are armatures andhe gives them a them to follow, then a "gift" that has to be used creatively in the meal. NowTHAT is a show I'd love to go on. It would be SO much fun to try and impress Bobby andperhaps learn from others by what they do. It is not like Iron Chef, where pro's go against thebest of the best, nor is it like Worst Cooks in America, where the contestants get sick from theirown food or habitually set the kitchen on fire. Now you got me thinking . .

I am still laughing my tail off at how clueless these people are in the kitchen. Have you not read arecipe?! Seriously, how hard is it to follow directions?! I learned to cook on my own with NOBODYTEACHING ME! Cooking is not a difficult thing to do. You can check out my cooking blog and seefor yourself. http://www.katieinthekitchenherethere.blogspot.com

I think my cuss word made someone delete the second part of my post. Sorry...well here is therest...I made mistakes and Mom, even though she could not cook, she knew how things shouldtaste and would critique me and, eventually, we both learned how to cook. Turned out I was thebetter cook so, over the years and even the last years of her life, we would cook together, herbeing my Sous Chef and me creating the recipes and directing. We had some of our best timesin the kitchen or going shopping, trying to figure out what to use Fennel for and why gingerlooked wrong to us! Makes me still smile.

I learned to cook out of necessity. Mom was pretty clueless in the kitchen and my Dad was abutcher and a great cook.. When he died, Grandmother came to live with us to help Mom takecare of me and, yes to cook. When she died when I was 13 or so, well SOMEONE had to domore than make sandwiches and boil eggs. I was always an excellent reader, far moreadvanced than all the other kids my age. Made me a bit of a geek but I digress. As I readrecipes, I started to cook.

    Reply

I learned how to cook at an early age. Some people have that innate talent in some things. Butit's easy for someone that knows how to cook to tell these people to read the recipe. Recipesare simple to me but to them, it might as well be written in Greek. One guy is a CPA. I don'tknow much about doing taxes. He would think I was clueless not to know how to do his job aswell. It's different for everybody. It's not difficult to us but it is to them. Not everyone is born tocook. Just because you know how to cook doesn't mean everyone else should know as well.

Stacy, Your words really hit home. I'm an equine journalist and put a camera in my hand and I'mtotally comfortable. I worked for the late Christopher Reeve when he was in a wheelchair andas me all the in and outs of dealing with mobility and wheelchair issues and I can sharethings you wouldn't think about. But put me in the kitchen and I feel overwhelmed. I think it'shard for some people to realize that but if you think of a profession you are not comfortable inand you might understand.

  • A brand-new season of Worst Cooks in America premieres in a few weeks on Sunday, February 17 at 9pm/8c and you may be wondering just how disastrous this years crop of culinary recruits really is in the kitchen. Do they know how to deglaze a pan, or are they such beginners that theyve never seen a skillet? Are they familiar with basic kitchen utensils like the mandolin? Whats their understanding of spices?

We were asking ourselves these questions and others, and decided to put the recruits kitchen knowledge to the test. Watch the video below to find out how the contestants fared in our exclusive culinary quiz and see them answer often with hilariously shocking responses some of the most seemingly basic cooking questions. Equestrian to Compete on Food Networks Worst Cooks in America TV ShowFebruary 13, 2013By: Brittany Bevis

The Food Networks next season of their hit reality show, Worst Cooks in America, will premiere Sunday, February 17th at 9 p.m. ET/PT. Among the 14 cooking-challenged contestants that will be vying for the winners title, a $25,000 grand prize, and a full set of kitchen products from Kohls, will be an equestrian, more specifically, an equine journalist named Diana De Rosa.

Even if youre not familiar with De Rosa personally, youve probably seen a few of her photos or read one of her stories without having realized it. By taking a look at De Rosas profile with the Society of Professional Journalists, its plain to see this veteran reporter has the credentials to back up her 30 years of experience within the field.

De Rosa is not only an accomplished equestrian, she also once ran a riding school. She was the editor of an equine magazine for 13 years and has had over 1,000 stories and photos published in local, regional, and national media. She received her press credentials for the past six Olympic Games, attended every World Equestrian Games, and worked on assignment for USA Today at the 1992 Olympics. (SPJ)

But despite her vast media experience and talents within the realms of the equestrian world, there is one area that De Rosa is admittedly lacking, and thats in the kitchen. According to her competitor biography from the Food Network, De Rosa is described as a health fanatic that currently survives on nuts, dried fruit, Greek yogurt, protein shakes, and leftovers from friends. When she does attempt the kitchen basics, she burns food and cant even work a blender without spilling the contents all over the kitchen. Shes been a successful equine journalist covering events around the globe, but cooking is the one thing she still needs to master.

Caption: Diana De Rosa works with ingredients from her home shopping list to prepare a meal for the chefs that she would make for herself at home, as seen on the Food Networks Worst Cooks in America, Season 4. Image provided by the Food Network.

More than likely, we, as fellow equestrians, can all relate to De Rosas culinary quandary. When it comes to jet-setting around the country for horse shows, living out of hotels for an extended period of time, and working those late, sleepless nights, having a well-balanced meal is often the last thing on your mind. However, De Rosa hopes to change all of that by competing in the Food Network competition that promises to turn kitchen zeroes into kitchen heroes.

With what I do, there are often events you go to where you are fed, De Rosa says. When my parents were alive, they would always give me leftovers. Im also okay with just eating things like cheese, yogurt, hard boiled eggs, nuts, carrots, and fruit, stuff you can just buy and eat that doesnt need to be cooked.

[My kitchen skills] are non-existent. I can make oatmeal, but I do it in a slow cooker. I can cook eggs, but they always end up burnt on the bottom.

Celebrity chefs, Bobby Flay and Ann Burrell, will guide their respective teams of seven cooking-challenged contestants through the seven episode competition. The season 14 premiere will begin by introducing the 14 contestants that have been nominated by their family and friends. The team selection process will take place following a brief competition where contestants will be asked to cook their best dish from a grocery bag of preserved and canned foods that have been found in their homes.

For the first team challenge, contestants must create a classic meat and potatoes dish without using a microwave. Anne Burrells team will attempt a seared pork chop with bacon and grape port wine sauce. Bobby Flays team will try to create a beef tenderloin in mushroom, mustard, and red wine sauce. At the conclusion of each episode, the contestant with the least successful dish will be eliminated from the competition. Other future episodes feature fresh fish, gelato, and a role reversal where the recruits must try to teach Ann and Bobby how to cook a dish.

Worst Cooks is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity for these hapless cooks to learn from the best of the best Anne and Bobby. Their natural competitive nature and sense of humor dealing with their teams mishaps and blunders have made the show an audience favorite, says Bob Tuschman, General Manager and Senior Vice President, Food Network. The culinary transformations are heartwarming and hilarious viewers will be amazed at just how far the contestants come.

Because of her equestrian background, De Rosa is very competitive.

[My horse friends] think its a hoot, she says. Im glad they think making a fool of myself is a hoot, but if you cant laugh at yourself what fun is life? Im extremely competitive, but the bottom line is I have no clue what to do in the kitchen, and its hard to be competitive when youre that lost. Its like playing a tennis match when youve never held a tennis racket in your hand. Thats how I feel when I get in the kitchen.

The series finale has been scheduled for March 31st at 9 p.m. ET/PT. During the finale, the last two contestants will prepare a three course meal for judges and food experts, Andrew Carmellini, Anita Lo, and Floyd Cardoz.

If De Rosa were to win the $25,000 grand prize she would put that money towards the mortgage on the property where both she and her sister live.

[The property] is where we grew up, and having us keep that property in the family was what both of our parents were hoping for, she says. Its pretty tough keeping up with the bills, but we have coined ourselves two sisters on a mission. We both work hours that no one should have to work just to make ends meet, but we are two very determined and independent females.

Will our fellow equestrian, Diana De Rosa, be one of the final two competitors standing? Youll have to stay tuned to see Be sure to watch the premiere of Worst Cooks in America on Sunday, February 17th at 9 p.m. ET/PT.

  • If you were going to cook something what would it be?Either oatmeal or eggs. My sister has chickens and I love the chicken eggs but I still cant seem to master the art of cooking an egg. I have this gadget where you put the egg in it, add water, put the top on, press a button and voila your egg gets cooked. Its simple and fast. The oatmeal I put in a slow cooker which Ive been told is a no no. But it works for me. And that is the end of my cooking. Well maybe not. I do make custard with my sisters eggs. The consistency never works out but it still tastes good (well at least to me it does). No one seemed to like it when I made it for Christmas one year.

Are there any similarities between your career and cooking?Organization I just wish I was better organized in the kitchen. To me combining a couple ingredients is about as much as I can do. Start adding cooking multiple things and I start stressing.

What would you tell the 10 year old version of you, knowing all that you know now? When you go to college take courses in business. As a youngster take gymnastics and keep stretching for the rest of your life. Start out when you are young eating healthy and understanding what that means.

Why did you do this?I recently lost my dad but in the last few weeks of his life he asked me to cook some things and I had no clue. I was devastated about it then and still am now. It was a wakeup call for me but hopefully my mom and dad are having a good laugh about this from heaven (she passed away in September of 2008). My mom was a great cook but we sometimes learn too late what things we shouldnt have taken for granted when our parents were alive. If they cook in heaven Im sure my dads back eating my moms great food.

What human has been the most profound influence in your life and why?My parents. They were my rocks and losing them was the most traumatic thing I have ever had to face. They were always there for me. After them it would be my sister Donna and my brother David, because those are the two siblings Ive spent the most time with and who have always been there for me. More recently my brothers Peter and Vincent have been great fun to be with. Outside of the family it would be Christopher Reeve for the 8 years I worked with him and the amazing man he was while paralyzed in a wheelchair.

Clip from Worst Cooks in America.

What did you think of the top chefs and team captains of Worst Cooks in America, Anne and Bobby?Amazing, truly amazing. So relaxed in the kitchen whipping through their dishes and explaining how to cook things. I hope one day I feel that comfortable in the kitchen. And recently I learned that Bobby is involved with racehorses. Now how cool is that. So maybe there is a connection with horses and cooking.

Would you do it again? In a heartbeat!

Where in the world would you like to visit most that you havent been yet?I think Thailand or Egypt. Ive already been to over 30 other countries and so Id like to get to the countries I havent yet been to.

If you wrote your autobiography, what would be the title? My life is/was a hurricane fast and furious!

Whats your favorite HorseGirlTV episode?I would have to say The Path To The Olympics With Heather Blitz & Paragon. Ive covered 7 Olympics and loved every one of them. Nothing like being right outside the arena taking pictures. I liked the personal story that Heather saw her horse born and she helped him to stand.

Worst Cooks is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity for these hapless cooks to learn from the best of the best Anne and Bobby. Their natural competitive nature and sense of humor dealing with their teams mishaps and blunders have made the show an audience favorite, said Bob Tuschman, General Manager and Senior Vice President, Food Network. The culinary transformations are heartwarming and hilarious viewers will be amazed at just how far the contestants come.

In the season premiere, the fourteen recruits, each nominated by family and friends for their awful cooking skills, are greeted at culinary boot camp by Anne, Bobby and grocery bags of food found in the contestants homes. Using their processed, packaged and canned foods to cook their best dish, each contestant faces a brutal first tasting and teams are selected. NEW YORK - January 10, 2012 - Worst Cooks in America, the primetime Food Network hit that turns kitchen zeroes into kitchen heroes, returns for a fourth season with a rematch between undefeated series champion Anne Burrell and culinary master Bobby Flay. Premiering on Sunday, February 17th at 9pm ET/PT, this season's fourteen cooking-challenged contestants are split into two teams, one led by Anne and one by Bobby, for a grueling seven-episode competition designed to turn them into competent cooks. A $25,000 grand prize will be awarded to the winning contestant who has achieved the most successful culinary transformation, along with a victory for their team leader.

"Worst Cooks is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity for these hapless cooks to learn from the best of the best - Anne and Bobby. Their natural competitive nature and sense of humor dealing with their team's mishaps and blunders have made the show an audience favorite," said Bob Tuschman, General Manager and Senior Vice President, Food Network. "The culinary transformations are heartwarming and hilarious - viewers will be amazed at just how far the contestants come."

In the season premiere, the fourteen recruits, each nominated by family and friends for their awful cooking skills, are greeted at culinary boot camp by Anne, Bobby and grocery bags of food found in the contestants' homes. Using their processed, packaged and canned foods to cook their 'best dish,' each contestant faces a brutal first tasting and teams are selected. For their first challenge, the teams must create a classic meat and potatoes meal, without using a microwave. Anne's team attempts Seared Pork Chop with Bacon and Grape Port Wine Sauce, while Bobby's team tries Beef Tenderloin in Mushroom, Mustard and Red Wine Sauce. The contestant with the least successful dish on each team is sent home, while the remaining twelve competitors survive to cook another day. Upcoming episodes feature a fresh fish challenge, a gelato laboratory road trip and a role reversal where the recruits must teach Anne and Bobby. The series culminates in the finale on Sunday, March 31st at 9pm ET/PT, where the two remaining contestants prepare a three-course meal for a panel of culinary titans - Andrew Carmellini, Anita Lo and Floyd Cardoz, who will determine which chef has mentored their recruit to winning status.

    HUNTINGTON

Could She Be The Worst Cook?Huntington woman cut in first episode of Food Network showBy Jacqueline Birzon/ [email protected]

Diana De Rosa dreams of cooking the perfect eggplant rollatini one day.Unfortunately, the Huntington resident bit off more than she could chew during the firstepisode of Food Networks Worst Cooks In America. She was eliminated on the Feb. 17season four premiere.

However, Northport native Suzanne Mangogna, also a contestant on the show, hopes tobring home the bacona grand prize of $25,000.

The series aims to teach contestants who lack a basic knowledge of cooking the tools tobecome successful in the kitchen. Both De Rosa and Mangogna were chosen to be on ChefAnne Burrells team for the seven-week long Boot Camp filmed in New York City. Othercontestants on the show are trained under the wing of Chef Bobby Flay, who lost in ameatball contest to Maronis Cuisine owner Michael Maroni several years ago.

De Rosa, who moved to Huntington as an 8-year-old, said she has an easy palate to please. As most of her choice meals can be easily prepared, such as yogurt, oatmeal and eggs, DeRosa, a single woman, has had little reason to cook.

During the first episode of Worst Cooks, De Rosa became flustered when host chefs Flayand Burrell gave contestants their first assignment. Not only was it difficult for her toprepare a cut of porkshed never cooked meat beforebut it was also a challenge for herto figure out what pans, utensils and cutlery to use.

Her ultimate downfall, however, was that she forgot to dress her cut of pork with the sauceshe prepared. The real killer, she said, was that Burrell was willing to try her sauce, butamid all the commotion De Rosa forgot to turn off the heat, and the sauce burned.

I was doing really well. I was definitely stressed Its not just about knowing how to cook, for me it was trying to coordinate everything, De Rosa said.

Dedicated to her career as a Equine journalist, photographer and public relationsprofessional, De Rosa never got married nor does she have children. The aspiring actressworked as a manager for Christopher Reeves for eight years, and her time spent on the roadmeant she only had to worry about satisfying her own belly.

Her worst cooking experience, on top of failed attempts to make a simple shake, she said, was when she tried to prepare chicken soup for a friendthe same friend who nominatedher for the showand she forgot to take the paper off of the chicken.Meanwhile, Mangogna, 42, is a single mom who has resided in Northport and Fort Salongaher whole life. A graduate of Kings Park High School, Mangogna was nominated by herolder sister, Donna DiGiacomo, to be a contestant on the show.Mangogna said she decided it was no longer acceptable to feed her 7-year-old son,Christopher Liam, frozen burritos and precooked meals for dinner.

The biggest reason for me being on Worst Cooks is because of Christopher. I grew up in afamily that valued a home-cooked meal at the dinner table; it was the basis of our lives. Wehad incredible conversations during dinner time. Some of the fondest memories of family[were had there] and I want to instill that into my sons family values, too, Mangogna said.

Mangogna, a front desk manager at Axios Salon in Lake Grove, said she would love to learnhow to cook seafood. Raised by the water, Mangogna has been a boater and a fisherwomanher entire life. Before the show, Mangogna got into the habit of catching fish and calling afriend or relative over to prepare it for her. Ideally, she would love to learn how to cookChilean sea bass on her own.

the most successful culinary transformation, along with a victoryfor their team leader.

Diana DeRosa on Worst Cooks on Food Network

We talked with Diana about her experience:

Give us an overview, what is Worst Cooks of America.

It is a show that airs on Sunday nights at 9:00 p.m. on the Food Network and startedwith 14 recruits that truly either dont know how to cook or are terrible cooks. They aresplit into two teams; one headed by Bobby Flay and the other by Anne Burrell. Whilethe recruits are going head-to-head so are the chefs who are doing their best tomake one person become the cook that wins in the very end. Each week the worst cookis voted off the team. Sadly I was the first to go. So sad

What inspired you to try out for Worst Cooks in America?

I guess the fact that I am not a cook. Its not that I am a bad cook but rather that Idont know how to cook because there never was a need. I recently lost my dad afterlosing my mom in 2008. I travel a lot and so eat on the road quite a bit at functions Icover. When home I often would have a freezer full of leftovers from my parents. Nowthat no longer exists and although Im okay with eating very simply (nuts, cheese, eggs, yogurt, shakes, salad, oatmeal, fruit, veggies, cereal, etc.) I am starting to wish Icould whip up a delicious and quick meal. I also wish I had taken the time to learnfrom my mom who was a great cook.

Whats the best memory you have from the show?

Meeting all the nice people the recruits, the team interviewing, filming, editing andoverseeing us and most of all getting to learn from Anne (rather brief but I learned alittle).

    Diana eliminated from Worst Cooks

What is your least favorite memory?

Forgetting to put the sauce on my meat and then forgetting to turn the stove off andthen having my burnt sauce shown over and over again on TV. Yikes, what a reminderof why I was the first on my team to be eliminated.

    What is your hope?

To try again in Season 5. After truly proving I am the Worst Cook in America, Id like achance to redeem myself.

Tell us a bit about what went on?

I keep wanting to sing the Beatles song Yellow Submarine but substitute the words We all lived in a cute brownstone? Being all in one home was good because it gave usthe freedom to meet each other. Yep, its true we are all very different but we all hadone common bond we were clueless in the kitchen. Each day wed go to the set and alittle at a time wed be told what was happening next and we never had much time toprepare. Id often think of it as a fire suddenly the room burns into flames and youhave to make some quick decisions because you dont have much time. My goal was totry and stay organized but wow that was tough. I had difficulty remembering whichpots to use, utensils, herbs, etc. But I tried taking good notes. I couldnt quite figureout properly cutting with the knife. I also remember washing my hands a ton of timesbecause I didnt want to ever get yelled at for not being sanitary. So, my answer hereis also like a fire Im just tossing out things as they come into my mind.

How did you feel when you first entered the kitchen?

Overwhelmed. All this food, things to cook with, refrigerators and no pop it in themicrowave opportunity. I often felt like I was about to jump into an ocean and I didntknow how strong the current was and whether Id end up sinking or be able to swim. But I tried my darndest to swim until that sauce became my demise, and I sank

Anne Burrell and Bobby Flay on WCIA

    Tell us about you?

Im an equine journalist (both writer and photographer). Ive covered 7 OlympicGames, all the World Equestrian Games, and many Pan Am Games and World Cups. Ialso have a PR firm and work with just a few clients at a time whose goal it is to reachthe media. My past includes doing some PR for Fox and DreamWorks for their movies:Dreamer, Spirit and Flicka. I think what I like most about what I do is seeing thefinished product. Looking at a story that Ive written supported by photos Ive takenand then reliving the memories. I also had the honor of working for the lateChristopher Reeve for the last 8 years of his life. That was truly amazing. I was hopingthis cooking show would be amazing as well with a happier ending for me.

What memories are you reliving from the show?

Being given 90 minutes to cook a meal I just was taught to cook as someone whonever cooked meat in her life. Watching those last few minutes tick away and feelingokay when timeout was called until panic set in when I realized I never put the sauceon my meat. Feeling my heart sink knowing that alone was a good reason for me to beeliminated and waiting for the bomb to drop. But on the positive side it was watchingAnne as she showed us how to prepare the pork, make three types of potatoes andexplain some of the terminology. She did it with such ease that I hope one day I feelthat way. Now Im looking forward to watching along with everyone else to see whomade it to the end.

    Any last comments:

Well, just in case your readers dont know I got eliminated in the first of seven roundsbut that show is still being repeated. So, it is possible to see what happened and worthwatching. Finally, Im hoping I get a chance to redeem myself. I remember thinking tomyself Please dont let me be the first one from my team to be eliminated. Now I feellike I need to prove that I can learn and go from a kitchen zero to a kitchen hero (or atleast a partial hero further than one round). And Id love to hear from your readers

who watched the show what they thought and any cooking tips they might offer. I thinkI need a great guy who can cook to take pity on me and teach me. I think it would befun learning from a guy since Ive noticed they seem to be into cooking more than wewomen. But in truth no one could surpass Anne. She is a great teacher. http://www.multivu.com/players/English/58428-food-network-worst-cooks-in-america/

After choosing recruits to represent her on the Red Team, Chef Anne challenged them to recreate her meat-and-potatoes-style dish of pan-seared pork chops and new potatoes in just one hour and without the assistance of a microwave. Each contestant battled his or her own kitchen demons like onions and sharp knives, but not all of them overcame them. Photographer Diana De Rosa and chiropractor Dr. Bob Schaefer offered the most disappointing plates of the day, presenting Chef Anne with a dish that lacked sauce and was exceptionally greasy, respectively. In the end, however, the Red Team said goodbye to Diana on account of her inability to serve every component, and she left the competition believing that shes still one of the Worst Cooks in America.

Was there one element of Boot Camp that particularly surprised you?

DD: I didnt know what to expect so everything was a surprise, from the huge kitchen with all those supplies to meeting the other recruits to the way we were living and so on. I have to say that putting salt on the outside of the meat was something that I was totally clueless about.

You said that your Oatmeal and Quinoa Fruit Surprise is one of the few things you cook. Quinoa isnt the most mainstream ingredient and its been known to trip up even experienced at-home cooks. Whats the story behind your signature dish?

DD: I am into a healthy lifestyle and I heard that quinoa has protein in it. I am not a vegetarian but I often eat like one just because I happen to like vegetables, fruit, nuts, etc. So, I try to think of ways to eat more protein because I have been anemic in the past. I cook it overnight, so I just put the oatmeal, quinoa, raisins, cinnamon (also very good for you) and cut-up fruits in the slow cooker. I let it cook and by the morning I have my oatmeal mush (as I refer to it since it tends to overcook), hot and ready to eat. Im pretty easy to please so even food that isnt cooked just right tastes pretty good to me.

Its really embarrassing to know how old I am and not know how to cook, you told Bobby and Anne during tasting. Has being on the show inspired you to learn how to cook?

DD: Of course watching those two chefs toss out a meal was what I really loved and thats what I want to be able to go into the kitchen and not stress over how to cook something. So yes, they truly did inspire me. I want to learn how to cook but I was really hoping that Id have more time on the show to get more of the basics. Im not a read-the-book-type person. The best way I learn is from having someone show me what to do, which is exactly how they did it on this show. But then I only had one chance, which wasnt quite enough to go back home and actually have gained enough knowledge to cook. Having the chance to learn from the best of the best (albeit only one time) was something I will always cherish though.

Is there one kitchen skill in particular that you wish you could have mastered before you left?

DD: Cutting with a knife. Anne showed us but I found that very difficult and ended up cutting myself.

After the elimination, you said that you believe youre still the Worst Cook in America and that youd be interested in competing again on Season 5. If you were to join the contest again, would you prepare for the competition differently? How so?

DD: I would love to come back for Season 5. Its actually my hope and dream to be given another chance (and my mom and dad would thank Food Network from heaven, I am sure). I was pretty devastated to have it confirmed that I was truly the Worst Cook in America. The problem

with me is that that I dont cook at all. So, I fail at anything I try to cook because I dont have a clue about what to do. All the other people on the show, except maybe Dr. Bob, had cooked before and so they are comfortable around a kitchen. But for me I dont even know where to begin. So, I might start by trying to better understand the terminology and the different pots and pans. I was totally at a loss just trying to figure out those things. I think I also should have remembered to have a check-off list. As soon as I realized I forgot to put in the one ingredient, I knew that would get me eliminated. My heart sunk while I was standing there from that point on because I knew it would take a miracle for me to not be eliminated. To this day I stress over that simple but stupid mistake. I had cooked the sauce and was just waiting until the last minute to pour it over the food so the food wouldnt be too cold. I should have prepared the meal sooner and maybe I would have caught my mistake, and I should have had a check-off list. Id also spend some time trying to use the knife the way Anne showed us. And Ill watch more of the other Food Network shows to see if I can pick up anything. Once you are in that kitchen and the pressure is on its pretty scary, but I really do want another chance and am hoping Food Network gives me that chance.

Dishing Out 15 hours agoI do hope that Diana gets another chance. I also hope that she doesn't feel that she's hopeless in the kitchen. Maybe she can take baby steps like practice cutting her fruit and vegetables using the knife skills that Chef Anne taught them. Also, maybe she can use photography and food artistry to spark something and inspire her to be more involved in the kitchen. I wish her the best. ReportReply-1 Vote up Vote down
