Principal’s reportDear parents/caregivers,

Welcome back to all of our students and their families. I hope that everyone had a relaxing and enjoyable holiday. Staff have re-charged their batteries and are looking forward to an action-packed Term 4!

This week we have had some major tree works completed around the school to ensure that the trees in our playground are safe.

Sydney West athletics Congratulations to Bindi 6F and Jye 3S who did an outstanding job representing our school and the region at the Sydney West PSSA Athletics Regional Championships held on Thursday, 17 October at Homebush.

Jye placed 12th in the 100m boys and Bindi placed 11th in high jump 12/13yr girls and 20th in discus. A fantastic result, well done!

Hawkesbury’s Helping Hands provide the breakfast club at our school 2 mornings a week, so it is nice to give back.

Thank you to the school community for supporting our give back mufti day last Friday. We were able to raise $348 which will be donated to Hawkesbury’s Helping Hands.

On Tuesday night, 22 October, Bligh Park took to the stage as part of the Hawkesbury dance festival. Once again, our dancers were the stars

of the festival.

A big thank you to our wonderful dance teachers Miss Bourke, Miss Cranfield and Miss Pace.

Principal’s report (continued) ICAS competitions The following ICAS results have arrived at school online. Congratulations to the following students who received a credit. Science: Credit – Henry 2CMathematics: Credit – Henry 2C and Eli 2K

This year it is up to each individual school to print off certificates. Full details of your child’s performance can only be viewed online. When the certificates have been printed they will be presented at a whole school assembly. Included will be individual letters for parents indicating how they can access information online using an individual ID and password. Certificates and letters will be organised as soon as possible.

The writing results have yet to be forwarded to the school, and as soon as they arrive, they will also be provided as above. Thanks once again to both students and parents/carers who supported the ICAS competitions this year. Thank you to Mrs Conroy for organising and supervising the assessment.

Support unit classroom teacher positionThe merit selection process is underway for the selection of a classroom teacher for the support unit. This position will be filled with a start date of 2020. I will keep you informed as we move through this process.

Mr Barnes is taking some well-earned leave this term and we welcome Alex Tourgelis who will be replacing Mr Barnes in the support unit. We welcome him to the Bligh Park team.

Last term we said goodbye to Miss Howard and welcomed back Miss Patterson who is returning from maternity leave. She will be working on Mondays, Tuesdays and Wednesdays and Miss Hartenthaler on Thursdays and Fridays. Both teachers will continue to implement the teaching and learning program that was already in place for 4L.

Many aspects of a student’s placement are taken into consideration, to carefully place every student. The teachers possess

information on each student’s academic ability, reading levels, mathematics ability, NAPLAN results and emotional and social needs. Student friendship groups are taken into consideration as well.

Possible friendship groups are one consideration in the placement, however, it is viewed in terms of ‘learning buddies’ not necessarily ‘social buddies’. While having a special friend is important, I remind everyone that this is a class group for learning.

This is a very thorough process that involves considerable time, sensitivity and care. Every child is placed in reference to a bigger plan of how students, classes and teachers come together for optimal learning.

If you have any important information that you feel we need to take into consideration when placing your child/children for the 2020 school year, please inform me in writing prior to Friday 1 November 2019. This can be done by writing a letter and dropping it into the school office or sending an email to: [email protected].

Unfortunately, it is extremely difficult to change a child’s class after the new school year has commenced. Whilst, all concerns will be taken into consideration, I cannot guarantee that all requests will be fulfilled.

Also, if your child is not returning to Bligh Park Public School in 2020, please let the office staff know so we can do as much as possible to organise classes around anticipated enrolments.

We will commence our planning for 2020 soon and would greatly appreciate receiving information regarding any special considerations relating to class placements for the 2020 school year, as staff will soon begin the lengthy process of forming classes.

Planning for

2020

On Friday 18 October, our enthusiastic students took part in the first of our

2-week NRL skills clinic.

Kindergarten information evening took place on Monday 21 October. The information presented at this session provided our new parents to the school with valuable information that will assist them with the transition to school and how things work at ‘big school’.

Kindergarten transition sessions will be conducted on Monday 4 November, Wednesday 13 November and Friday 22 November.

Each of these sessions have a different focus that will assist our Kindergarten students when settling into ‘big school’ next year.

Selection of 2020 school leadersThe process for selecting our school leaders for 2020 has commenced with the nomination of students in Years 4 and 5. The school leaders will be announced at the Celebration of Learning later this year.

Applying for Year 7 entry into selective high schools in 2021Government schools use a range of strategies to meet the educational needs of gifted and talented students. One strategy is selective high school placement, which provides intellectual stimulation and an educationally enriched environment for gifted and talented students. Offers for selective high school placement will be determined mainly on the basis of the selective high school placement test results and school assessment.

This process is conducted online and the site is open from 8 October through to 11 November.

If you have any concerns, which you would like to discuss please contact the school office to make an appointment.

Kind regards,

Joan Westerweller
