Principal’s Report

A number of functions and events have been planned throughout term 4 to celebrate student achievement and success. We look forward to seeing you at our Year 12 Graduation Ceremony and Awards Evening which will be held at Bonython Hall, Adelaide University, on Thursday 1 December. Thank you to all of the families who attended our Parent Community Forum and the Term 4 parent/teacher interview night.

Welcome

We welcome Mitchell Clisby, Design and Technology Teacher, who has been appointed to our school until the end of the term whilst John Anusz is on leave. Darryl Ashby has returned as Head of Campus, Co-Education Middle Years, after his leave last term.

Congratulations

Congratulations to Chloe Wanklyn who has been nominated for the OfficeMax “A Day Made Better” Award which acknowledges exceptional teachers. Also congratulations to Diana Hinic who was selected as a finalist in the Secondary Teaching category of the 2016 SA Excellence in Public Education Awards. Unfortunately Diana did not win the award, however being selected as a finalist from over 900 nominations is an outstanding achievement.

World Teachers Day

World Teachers Day was on Friday 28 October. A special celebration morning tea was held to acknowledge the fantastic work of our teachers. Their enthusiasm and dedication is admirable, and World Teachers Day was a chance for us to recognise their positive impact on our students.

Assembly Celebration for the Year 12 Students

A very successful whole school assembly was held on Friday 4 November where we acknowledged the achievements of our 200 Year 12 students and wished them well in completing their assignments and sitting their exams over the next few weeks. Following the assembly the students undertook a fun and relaxing day at the Beach House, Glenelg.

Special Education Campus Celebrations

Our Year 12 Leavers Dinner will be held at the Mawson Lakes Function Centre on Friday 18 November and the Concert is planned for Thursday 8 December. I hope you will be able to join us at both events.

Yourtutor

Yourtutor, which is an online tutoring service, is available for all of our students to use to help them with their homework after school, and will also be available during the school holidays. This is a school funded program and is free of charge for our students to use. Please read the insert for more details about the times it will be available during the school holidays.

North East Community Day

On Saturday 5 November our school participated in the North East Community Day held at the Hillcrest Community Centre. This was a fantastic opportunity to showcase our school within the local community and to promote our STEM programmes. I was really proud of our staff and students who represented our school with such enthusiasm and pride.

Uniform Policy Survey

The Uniform Committee has been involved in the process of updating our Uniform Policy, which includes additional information about how students are to wear the uniform, the process to request changes and how to apply for an exemption. A survey link has been sent to you via email and SMS. Thank you to the families who have already provided feedback. The survey will be open until Monday 21 November. Please contact the school if you have not received the survey link.

Parent Community Forum

On Wednesday 19 October we held a very successful parent community forum where we discussed the issues our school is experiencing with the high volume of traffic on our school grounds after school and the related safety issues for our students. A number of solutions were suggested which the Governing Council will investigate.

School Values Totem Poles The totem poles promoting our school values have been installed in the main courtyard and they look fantastic. Thank you to the Facilities Committee for your work. We are now considering installing similar totem poles in the Special Education and Girls’ Education Campus courtyards so that all of our students can be reminded about our school values every day.

Curriculum Report

Our Year 12 students have been working harder than ever in the lead up to Year 12 exams and final assessments. Our Year 12 teachers have also been working ‘above and beyond’ supporting students, many staying late into the evening to give students the help they need.

All of our teachers will be involved in developing Year 8 to 12 units of work in our next Professional Development day on the 21 November 2016.

This will involve shared planning of curriculum, designing assessment tasks and moderating student work. We continue to work in a way to ensure that all students receive a quality education and that standards are consistent across classes.

Thank you to the many parents who attended Parent/Teacher interview evening on the 26 October, 2016. Our Parent/Teacher interview evening continues to be popular and make a big difference in student learning outcomes.

Special Education Campus Report

On the Wednesday 26 October students from the Special Education Campus and Special Classes attended a sports day at Rostrevor College. The day was organised by Special Olympics SA in conjunction with UniSA and it was the first of many new programs that Special Olympics SA have planned over the coming year. During the day the students had the opportunity to work collaboratively in teams, develop their coordination skills in a Frisbee competition and challenge themselves in a variety of athletics events. On behalf of the students I would like to thank Emma Russo for her organisation of the event and all of the staff whose wholehearted support makes these days so richly rewarding for all concerned. Creating connections with our community and encouraging students to engage with clubs and groups outside of school is the driving force behind many of our sport and leisure themed excursions. To this end we have also added a Middle Years aquatics program to our calendar. Those fortunate enough to have attended this program at the start of term 4 had a great time learning about water safety and the joys of kayaking at West Lakes. Our final major sporting event of the year is the South Australian Cricket Association Carnival aimed at encouraging young people with an intellectual disability to become actively engaged in the sport. In addition to the carnival our students have also benefited from 4 coaching clinics held at the school and again our thanks go to Emma Russo for her organisation of this program.

The 2016 Leavers Dinner will be held on 18 November at the Mawson Lakes Hotel and Function Centre. This annual event is the highlight of the year for many of our leavers as we gather to celebrate their contribution to the school. We believe the occasion will create a special memory for both students and their caregivers as they prepare for the next stage of their journey. Another date for the diary is our Christmas concert which is scheduled for Thursday 8 December at 1pm. All Special Education classes will be performing and there will also be a display of student’s artwork.

Term 4 is always a busy time of year as we both seek to secure pathways for our leavers and prepare thoroughly for the new academic year. The first noticeable changes for many of our students are the transition days for new enrolments which will be held on Tuesday 29 November and Tuesday 6 December. We will of course prepare students for the forthcoming changes and we do seek your support as we move through this process.

Year 12 End of Year Arrangements

Departing dates for Year 12 students

Students have different finishing dates according to their work requirements. Individual teachers have provided students information about specific work and attendance requirements and final dates for presentation or submission of work.

Not all year 12 subjects have an exam. Year 12 students will need to manage their time effectively and efficiently so that they can prepare for exam subjects and also meet normal assessment requirements in their other subjects. Students will need to meet and confer with their subject teachers during exam weeks.

Students must wear full school uniform when attending school for any reason. This includes attending school for exams and/or scheduled subjects or returning books.

Return of books (library and text books), laptop and laptop charger, combination lock and collection of year book When year 12 students have completed their subject work requirements they will need to clean out their locker and return books, laptop, laptop charger, combination lock to Library. This process should be finalised by Friday 18 November 2016. Students can collect their year book from the Library (any time between 9.00 am until 10.30 am) on Friday 16 December 2016.

Graduation and Awards Evening

Year 12 students, parents/carers and staff will be invited to attend the Graduation and Awards Evening to be held on Thursday 1 December 2016. The venue for this event is Bonython Hall, North Terrace, Adelaide. Year 12 students will be recognised for years of study, completion of their senior years and special recognition eg subject and special awards. Year 12 students are expected to wear full school uniform.

Yr 7 Transition and Yr 9 Excursion

On Friday 25 November all Co-education Year 9 students will take part in a visit to the Semaphore Beach precinct. This will be their school day on this Friday and all Year 9 teachers will accompany them. Students will travel via charter bus at 9.00am and return to school just before normal dismissal time at 3.15pm to enable them to access buses if they chose to do so. Students will be provided with a sausage/bread or veggie pattie and a piece of fruit.

Whilst at the beach area students will participate in a range of different health, physical education and problem solving activities. All students will wear their PE uniform on the excursion and may wear this to and from school for this excursion only. We also strongly encourage students to wear/bring a hat and use sunscreen.

Whilst these students are away we will be visited by our 2017 Year 8 students coming to us for the day from their primary schools. We look forward to meeting them again after their initial interviews and supporting them to settle in well to RMSC.

Middle School Assembly

In week 6 we will be holding our final MS assembly for the year and students are keen to conduct several performances, receive well deserved awards and discuss end of year arrangements.

Roundtables

At present students are preparing well for their end of year roundtables which will occur in the last week of school. Parents should have received an information sheet about this with an invitation to attend. This is a great opportunity for students to showcase their progress this year and readiness for moving forward into 2017.

Reconciliation Relay

Following on from last term’s Reconciliation Congress about combatting racism and as part of the Port Adelaide Enfield Council’s Nunga Week, there is a Reconciliation Relay that our school is taking part in starting this week.

Roma Mitchell Secondary College has been asked to contribute to the relay by developing a short film about students’ experiences of racism and ways that it can be stopped. This Friday a message stick will be presented to our school from the Council that has travelled to different schools from this area and will then be taken with student and staff representatives to the next school. The short film will also be presented to the Council and displayed in public libraries. Thank you to Miss Wood, Julie and student participants who have contributed to this important school and community event.

AIME

In Week 1 our Year 9 and 10 students attended a session presented by Act Now Theatre in which students were encouraged to work with students they didn’t know and their mentors to develop team building skills and confidence.

The final AIME session is on Friday of Week 5 where we will take students who have participated in sessions throughout the year.

Reminders

A reminder to all our families that our End of Year BBQ and Presentation Evening is on next Thursday 17 November from 5:30pm.

Also in Week 6 on Wednesday we will have our Year 7 Aboriginal student Transition Day.

Our school has been very fortunate to be associated with Kiwanis International to carry out its mission to help those in our community. Key club has also provided our students with wonderful opportunities to enhance their personal and inter-personal skills and prepare them for a productive career once they have left academy.

This time of the year is a milestone in the senior years. Year 11 Key Club students are about to begin their year 12 studies for SACE, and this time of the year is also the time when year 9 and 10 assume their mantle of students leadership in the school whilst the current Key Club members prepare to say their farewells and pass on their seat to juniors and share their skills and experiences to the young ones to take their place.

Let me congratulate each of the following students who have been great representatives and leaders of the key club:

Shirin Mohammad Ali - Vice President Thao Ha - Treasurer

RMSC Children’s University Team

This term we had 13 students (2 couldn't make it) from Roma Mitchell graduate with 200 other students from a range of other metropolitan schools at Adelaide University's Bonython Hall.

It was wonderful to see all the RMSC students proudly walk across the stage and receive a certificate for their engagement in extra learning activities throughout the year. All students received the National Bronze award for accumulating 30 hours of extra learning whilst 2 students, Kristina Farkas & Emily Luckhurst were awarded with the National Silver award for accumulating 65 hours.

Lots of family and friends came along to support which was wonderful to meet them as well. If you see the girls around the school please congratulate them on a job well done, and hope that it serves as motivation for other students to join the Children’s University Team!
