Attendance at school

Why is regular attendance at school important? Regular school attendance will help

your child to succeed in later life. Attending school every day makes learning easier for

your child and helps build and maintain friendships with other children, and to develop

social skills.

If your child misses learning the basic skills in the early years of primary or secondary

school, they may develop learning problems in later years. Absences from school soon

add up, for example:

1 day off a week = 10 days a term, or 2 weeks learning is lost

1 day off a week over the period of 1 year = most of one term of learning is lost

Successful 2012 Cross Country Left to right: Britney, Tiffany and Emma are pictured recovering after competing

in our Annual School Cross Country.

If this pattern starts in Kindergarten and continues through to Year 6, almost one and a half years of

learning is lost.

If this pattern continues through high school, students will miss nearly three years of learning.

If students miss a number of days of learning, they reduce the chance of achieving to their academic

potential. Missing school leaves gaps in your education, and affects your future life.

School uniform

Now that the cold weather is here, students are moving to wearing the winter uniform. It is important

for students to stay warm in the colder weather. Students should wear the school fleece top and the

school jacket. Fleece tops are available from the clothing pool and jackets may be purchased from the

school office. Parents who require assistance with school uniform for students should also contact the

school office.

As we move into the cold and sniffles season, students should also bring tissues or a handkerchief

with them to school.

Parents and carers are requested to support the school policy on wearing school uniform.

School assembly

The next school assembly is scheduled for Friday I June, preceded by an afternoon tea hosted by the

P&C Association. Afternoon tea begins at 2.00pm and the assembly will start at 2.30pm. Parents and

family members are cordially invited to join the school for a “cuppa” and the assembly.

Positive behaviour for learning (PBL)

PBL will continue to be a focus throughout Term 2 and the 2012 school year, with students

participating in a weekly PBL lesson on how to behave appropriately in each learning setting. The

PBL core values of Respectful, Responsible, and Learner are taught in the lessons, and students learn

how to be respectful, responsible and a learner.

The focus for Term 2 is on being Responsible in each learning setting.

The school developed the PBL core values and expected behaviours in consultation with the Parents

and Citizens Association. The school and the P&C consider that it is a requirement for students to

adhere to our PBL expected behaviours while at school or while involved in a school activity.

Cross country

The school cross country event was conducted on Wednesday last week, with students from Caragabal

Public School joining us. Fortunately, the day was fine and not too cold, and all of the students

competed strongly.

It was great to see a large number of parents and family members attending to support their children

competing in this event.

A number of students recorded very competitive times, and will now progress to the Lachlan PSSA

Cross Country event, which will be held at the Forbes racecourse on Friday 25 May. The students’

pre-event training and preparations have been worthwhile.

Mrs Robinson will provide information to students who qualified for the Lachlan PSSA Cross

Country.

Thanks are extended to Narelle Gault for assisting with organisation of the event and teachers for

supervision during the event. Thanks also to Craig Dowsett (GrainCorp) and Paul Harris for

providing high-visibility vests for supervising staff.

Education Week

Education Week is scheduled for Week 3 of Term 3 and Quandialla Central School will present an Open Day

and special education week assembly on Wednesday 1 August. Pencil this date into your diaries.

Athletics carnival

The Quandialla Central School athletics carnival is scheduled for Wednesday 6 June. The athletics carnival is a

very enjoyable day for students and families, and provides an opportunity for families and friends to visit the

school, support their children and to catch up with everyone.

The P&C will again run the canteen during the day, and we look forward an enjoyable day.

School website

A reminder that the school website has been updated, and now provides parents with access to a number of

important documents, including the PBL resources, 2011 Annual School Report and Student Welfare Policy.

The 2010 Yearbook and new photographs of students are also on the school website – go to www.quandialla-

c.schools.nsw.edu.au

Kids’ winter camps

Bookings are now open for Kids’ Winter Camps run by the NSW Office of Communities (Sport and Recreation). Camps are a great way to boost children’s confidence, help them make new friends and encourage

shy children out of their shell. Camps are offered around the state, including snow camps, fishing camps and

cooking experiences. Camp packages include activities, accommodation, 24-hour supervision and nutritious meals. Supervised transport is also offered to and from most camps.

For more info go to: www.dsr.nsw.gov.au/kidscamps/.

Healthy habits start young

Finding a sport or activity that your child likes to do is a great way to keep them active and motivated and in

doing so, keep them healthy. Play for Life – Join a Sporting Club – is supported by the Active After School

Activities Program. You can browse sporting clubs by location and type of sport and find one that suits your

family. With over 70 sports to choose from, you’re sure to find something that will appeal. For more info and

to check out other great tips go to: www.healthykids.nsw.gov.au/campaigns-programs/play-for-life-join-a-

sporting-club.aspx.

Tutoring advice

If you are considering engaging a private tutor for your child, there are a number of issues to consider. In the

first instance, discuss your child’s progress with their teacher as any problems may be able to be sorted out in

the classroom without the need for a tutor. A good tutor should be able to instil confidence in your child and

work in partnership with the school. Find out more at School A to Z, the online school community that aims to

give parents the support they need to help their children’s learning and development:

ASPIRE comes to town

All students at Quandialla Central School will be involved in a workshop about higher education on Tuesday 5

June. A team from the University of New South Wales (UNSW) ASPIRE project will be working with the

students to encourage them to think about the possibility of going on to higher education.

“Many bright kids in regional New South Wales miss out on educational opportunities because they don’t know

there are choices available to them,” says Ann Jardine, Director of the ASPIRE project.

“For some students the idea that they are capable of doing well at university can come as a surprise. They may

have never thought about it before, don’t have anyone in their family who has tertiary qualifications or don’t

know how to get there if they want to go. The ASPIRE programme aims to change those perceptions and show

students that going to university is possible.”

This will be the third year that ASPIRE has worked with Quandialla Central School.

The programme is specifically tailored for regional school students from K to Year 12.

Armed with age-appropriate, the team works with the different age groups helping them to think more broadly

about what they want to do when they leave school and how to make it happen.

The programme is fun and enlightening. It is designed to inspire the students to think about themselves, their

future and the different pathways they can take to achieve what they want to do in life.

For younger students, the aim is to create an awareness of higher education and build self-esteem to get them

thinking about themselves and what they like to do.

Older students will explore the benefits of higher education in the long term. They are given the tools and

information on finding out what they are good at and interested in and how to find a course that best suits what

they would like to pursue. They get to talk to current uni students and may be able to visit a uni campus. They

are also given practical help in filling out the paperwork to apply for university and information on

accommodation, scholarships and any financial support for which they may be eligible.

By creating an awareness of higher education generally, and the jobs and careers that are available, ASPIRE

shows students that it is possible to go to university no matter who you are or where you come from.

The programme helps break down myths and barriers that have prevented some students from regional areas

participating in higher education.

ASPIRE isn’t a recruitment drive for any particular university. It is about giving students the tools to make

more informed choices about their own future.

Quandialla is one of more than 20 schools in regional NSW in partnership with the ASPIRE programme.

If you would like to know more about ASPIRE, visit www.aspire.unsw.edu.au , email

[email protected] or call 02 9385 6164.

Quandialla Parents and Citizens

Association

Thank you to the parents, teachers and community members who

attended the May P and C meeting. It was wonderful to have so many

people contribute to discussions and share their ideas. If anyone has any

questions regarding the meeting and the outcomes please call Kirsty

Pockley on (02) 6347 2168 or email [email protected].

What happened at the meeting?

We heard how the primary school students all have buckets hats stored in the

classroom. The teachers are very pleased with how successful this has been as all

students now wear the same hat.

We heard how all primary school students now have laptops in the classroom.

The P and C have decided to host an afternoon tea before the next Quandialla

Central School Assembly on Friday June 1, 2012.

The school has asked the P and C for their financial support to upgrade the soft fall

in the playground area. The P and C would also like to assist by providing a working

bee for this project.

The P and C will send a copy of the school yearbook to families with prospective

students for 2013

Mr Foster explained how the community could access the ‘Big Shed’.

Thank you, again, to all those who attended the meeting. The P and C meeting is a

great opportunity to discuss school issues, share ideas and contribute to your

children’s education at Quandialla Central School. If you would like to be involved but

unsure of what it is all about please call Kirsty Pockley on (02) 6347 2168 or email

QUANDIALLA CENTRAL SCHOOL

CHESS REPORT I played the most exciting game of chess with Hayden at school last Monday. I know most of you think playing chess is as boring as watching paint dry, but please, just stay with me on this one. Julian and Emma played on the big chess set. Hayden wandered over wanting to play a game of chess against me. I thought to myself… Well I did win against Russell and I won a game in six moves against a 14 year old boy….this should be another piece of cake… Be gentle… he is just a child… you don‟t want to upset him… What if he cries because I would not let him win? I would never be allowed to play chess at school with children again!!! So I take it easy on the student. He sits opposite me with a smile and I sense his good nature hitting my heart and soul. Well, for one absent minded second he takes my horse… I blink and he takes another major player. I turn to look at Julian and Emma playing, he takes another major player. I smile at Hayen. I think… I have to pull my socks up or this kind smiling chess assassin will put me to shame and win in the first five minutes of play. So I take his major players. He takes my pawns and I take his. It‟s turning out to be a friendly competition. I have to keep up. Then the unthinkable happens!!! Hayden takes my horse with a bishop. I sat up… took a good look… „Wait a minute! you can‟t take my horse with my bishop. Than, Hayden wants to take my queen. I am too smart for him. He persists attacking my queen. He even wants to sacrifice his queen as long as he takes my queen. His pawns never made it to the other side, but mine did. I got myself a castle, which now has the strength of a queen. Well… I finally have his check mate. Smiling, Hayden convinced me with his continuous good nature to give him a queen so we can play on. I mellow and allow it to happen even if it is not in the rules. He threatened my king a few times giving me check I finally took his queen. Little did I know that it was one of many times I would let him have the queen, a castle, another queen just so he could continue to play the game. I took a while but I took them all one by one giving him a friendly check mate over and over. I was finally saved by the bell. What a game!! Emma called me over, there was something wrong with the check mate Julian gave her before he ran away to play handball. I checked it and found the game was not over. I thought about how I would write this. I suppose I could have just done this… Hayden played against me and I won Emma played against Julian and check mate was not reached. Julian discontinued the game saying he gave a check mate when it really was not. But the heart and soul of the game cannot be described in a couple of sentences.

COUNCIL NEWS 23/05/2012

Extra – ordinarily fine weather, albeit fresh in the mornings. However our farming community is badly looking for a good burst of rain to germinate the many hectares of crops that are being planted.

The shire really does need a good season to lift confidence and provide a bit of spare cash. It would give the local economy a real

boost after the prolonged drought. The only proviso most people would place on it is: “not the Festival weekend!”

This year’s Lawson Festival seems to be coming along quite well under the guidance of new President John Hunter and his executive.

Nearly every coordinator’s position has been filled and the committee is going about its work very determinedly.

The town and the businesses seem to be getting behind it all again, so this year should be another good occasion.

There will be an informal get together of the coordinators at the Bowling Club on 29 May to iron out any last-minute problems and

fine tune the programme.

There were a number of important issues decided at last week’s Council Meeting.

Of immediate importance to most people would be the rates for 2012/13, which are proposed to stay at the rate-capped increase of

3.6%. Some individual properties and rating categories will vary from this, some up, some down, but the overall increase is limited.

To date Council has not been forced to apply for a special variation to increase the rates above the rate-capped figure, even though the

majority of people who responded to the consultation for the Community Strategic Plan, were prepared to accept this for a special

project. It may not be very far away, but not next year.

Another important milestone was the adoption of the Community Strategic Plan after being publicly exhibited for any comments.

This plan was prepared by local consultant Phil Diprose after extensive consultation in Grenfell and around the villages, including an

internet survey. Most people should be pleasantly surprised at this inaugural plan as it contains a lot of information from and about

the local community including a number of aspirational projects.

Two subsidiary draft plans were also approved for public exhibition, being the 4 year Delivery Program and the 1 year Operational Plan.

The Delivery Program is intended to last for the term of a council so this first one is a bit of a trial run. The new Council in

September will have 12 months to develop its own Delivery Program for its four year term, which is when the proper timing should

fall into place. The Operational Plan contains details of the projects and the budget for Council’s works program in 2012/2012, and was previously

known as the Management Plan.

Both these draft plans will be on exhibition until 18 June and submissions are welcomed.

There has been some vandalism and damage to Council property lately.

One of the entrance gate posts to Lawson Oval has been struck by a vehicle so strongly that it will have to be re-built. The bricks are

no longer available which means they will all have to be cleaned for re-use, something the brickie is not looking forward to.

The other location was the new viewing platform where someone (or ones) decided to demonstrate their lack of skill and lack of

intelligence with a paint spray can.

Anyone with any information on either of these matters can contact the Police or Council – your assistance would be much

appreciated.

Many people received a notice in the mail recently, informing them that digital television transmissions for Grenfell would commence

on 11 May. Apparently it was referring to a new transmitter attached to the Telstra tower on Bogolong Hills, which means there is

now local digital transmission for ABC, SBS, Prime, WIN and Ten.

You may need to rotate your antenna to face the Telstra tower, and you will have to have your booster disconnected, but the new site

may give improved services for the areas of the town which have good coverage from the tower. It is unusual there has been no

media publicity for what is a welcome new service for Grenfell.

Whilst on television transmissions, the old analogue system is scheduled to cease very shortly and there will only be digital. Your old

set will still work provided you install a set-top box which are readily available at electronics stores.

If you are a full pensioner, you may be eligible for Federal assistance under the Household Assistance Scheme. Call Centrelink on

1800 556 443.

This is a good place to remind everyone that the Australian Government Mobile Office (including Centrelink) will be in Grenfell this

Thursday 24 May. Staff may be able to answer enquiries about television assistance on the spot.

It would seem that most people have already replaced their old TVs with the new digital models. The recent e-waste collection accumulated 40 pallets of old TVs in Grenfell, where Cowra only had 20 pallets. Clearly more local people did the right thing to

achieve this surprising result.

Dates to Note 7-11 June - Henry Lawson Festival

18 June - Town Works Committee, 5.00 pm

21 June - Ordinary Council Meeting, 5.00 pm
