Once again the exam season is upon us and sadly this will be my last at Longfield. Whilst not the longest serving member of staff (Mr Croxton is….), I am certainly one of the veterans and so aſter 24 years it is with many fond memories that I pen my last newsleer front sheet. I joined Longfield Upper School as Head of Maths in 1992 and this became Axton Chase 11-18 School shortly aſter. In 2008 we became ‘Longfield Academy’ and in July 2011 moved into this wonderful and first rate building. However, it is not the fabric of the place that makes it special but the people who work and visit us. It has been an honour and privilege to have worked with so many outstanding individuals within Longfield and the Trust. I would like to say a very, very big thank you to all parents who, on a daily basis, support us in our quest to ensure your children have the best possible start to their careers and future studies by being well rounded and successful. I move on from Longfield to be Principal of DSTC from September. I wish all of our students, and you as parents, the very best going forward and I hope our paths cross again at some point. Once again the exam season is upon us and sadly

this will be my last at Longfield. Whilst not the

longest serving member of staff (Mr Croxton is….),

I am certainly one of the veterans and so after 24

years it is with many fond memories that I pen my

last newsletter front sheet.

I joined Longfield Upper School as Head of Maths

in 1992 and this became Axton Chase 11-18 School

shortly after. In 2008 we became ‘Longfield

Academy’ and in July 2011 moved into this

wonderful and first rate building. However, it is

not the fabric of the place that makes it special but

the people who work and visit us. It has been an

honour and privilege to have worked with so many

outstanding individuals within Longfield and the

Trust.

I would like to say a very, very big thank you to all

parents who, on a daily basis, support us in our

quest to ensure your children have the best

possible start to their careers and future studies by

being well rounded and successful. I move on

from Longfield to be Principal of DSTC from

September. I wish all of our students, and you as

parents, the very best going forward and I hope

our paths cross again at some point.

Congratulations to all those who have achieved 100% attendance!

Every day counts!

You will no doubt have read in the national press about the parent appealing against the fine imposed on him for taking his child out of school during term time.

‘……….the High Court ruled in favour of a father who refused to pay a £120 fine for taking his daughter on an unauthorised term-time holiday. (BBC 19.5.16)

The academy will continue to follow the Attendance Policy and KCC Code of Practice: term time holidays are not authorised unless in very special circumstances. Parents should contact the Principal in writing if they wish to apply.

Several parents have asked us to clarify this. As a Trust and in working in partnership with with Kent County Council it is clear that the court case was not about authorising holidays, but rather the penalty notice and the fine that was issued subsequently.

Maths fact number 2!

Solutions for the Planet competition began in January with the Big Ideas day (where we started with 180 students in the theatre). Following that there have been 10 after school events supported by mentors from SGN (the gas network firm) as well as from Tarmac.

Two groups from Longfield Academy reached the semi-final last Monday at Greenwich University and two of our students, Leo Warren and Harry Powell, came third out of 12 (our second group containing Hannah Johnson, Maisie Iles, Lauren Gregory and Sophie McCarthy) didn't place but gave a great presentation.

The boys have been invited to a training session on presentation skills on 7th June given by SGN at their premises in Orpington to prepare for the final, which will take place at the Palace of Westminster on 11th July.

Harry and Leo said of their experience …… “We attended a science competition and were lucky to find ourselves in the semi-finals at Greenwich University. At the semi-finals we came 3rd overall, but were told that on 24th May some more finalists would be announced and we were one of them.

The final will be held at the Houses of Parliament where we will be judged by many top politicians. Our Big Idea, which we will showcase to the judges, is to put sensors in the top of bins which will set off and send a notification to an app that council refuse collectors will have. This will help the problem of waste and the outcomes of it massively. Our goal is to reduce the consequences of waste by 20% in two years.

We now have a month to prepare for the final and our journey to success will continue”.

Harry Powell and Leo Warren

Euro 2016 Challenge Some of our Year 8 and 9 students have had the pleasure of participating in the EURO 2016 CHALLENGE organised

by Arsenal Football Club and their Arsenal Double Club of Languages. In celebration of the European Championships in France this summer, they launched an exciting competition for all UK secondary schools. THE CHALLENGE: pupils were to create a language activity for primary school children, in any language, about France or French culture. All of them were very creative and one group, Marcus Sooknanan, Josh Bevan, Alan Loader, Jussim Raffiquddeen and Kieran Dawes will have the privilege to present their ideas at the Emirates Stadium in June!

Mr Geavert

De la Terre à la Lune

When Jules Verne wrote his novel in 1865, reaching the Moon seemed possible in only science fiction; very few people would have dared to even dream about it. In the same way, at the beginning of Year 8 none of our students would have imagined they would have ever been able to stand in front of a crowd speaking about the universe in their second or even third language!

Thanks to their hardwork and commitment, a group of our Year 8 students achieved it and it seemed natural that they would talk about the achievements of those who have been the ‘first ones’ in the exploration of our Universe. In a mixture of languages and cultures that really broadened our horizons, they researched and talked about where you can see Gagarin’s capsule, how long Neil Armstrong’s mission lasted and how Valentina Tereshkova (first woman in outer space) volunteered for a one way trip to Mars. Well done Year 8, we are already looking forward to seeing what you will achieve next year!

Mr Quaggiotto

The MFL department is currently planning a trip to Madrid in Spring 2017. This trip will be open to

Spanish students in year 9 and 10 and the cost will be around £470. We will be visiting Madrid's

main monuments and museum, Real Madrid FC, and have a chance to taste some authentic

Spanish food as well as discover some of the Spanish culture (dance, music...) There will also be

time for students to walk around the busy streets of the town centre and practise their Spanish

language skills. We will also get a chance to meet with the students and teachers of the Madrid

school we have been working with for the last two years. Letters will be available from Miss

Charles after half term.

Spanish Trip

On the 20th of April, the English department held the first of their termly literacy tea parties - an afternoon of

baked goods and tea, in which parents were able to engage in dialogues with teachers and students, as a way

of improving reading in KS3.

The afternoon was a great success, with parents enjoying

being able to hear stories from KS4 students about their

passion for reading.

Similar events in which parents will be given the opportunity to learn different ways to encourage their child’s reading at home, will run for all year groups every term. Look out for information about the next one in September.

Six Year 8 students were given the opportunity to visit Bore Place Farm in Edenbridge.

It is part of an organisation that helps children to develop and build their

self-esteem. The farm has over 200 cows and the beautiful site is

spread over 500 acres. This includes growing bright exotic vegetables

and fruit which the chefs use to produce lavish meals in the main house.

The farm is a non-profit farm and totally dependent on charities such as the

lottery and comic relief.

Couples can hold their weddings here and feed off the lovely home

produced food. The farm aims to be as eco-friendly as possible by using

a bio mass boiler to heat the buildings and solar panels to power the

electrics. All of the cars on the farm are also electric, the only exception

is the tractor.

During our visit to the farm the students were fortunate enough to be able to

see 8 month old calves based within their cow shed. Many of the students

we able to touch the cows and learnt that they would be released with the

other cows when old enough. The farm produces £4000 worth of milk per

day.

We had a tour of the farm including a chance to take some ‘selfies’ with the cows, who were happy to pose. At lunchtime the students were invited to sample home-grown produce. Following that they were shown how to make

soap which was chilled ready for them to take home.

We all made friends with the farm’s border collie ‘Beau’.

"Longfield Academy Hosts its first Mentoring Business Breakfast

On Tuesday 10th May, Longfield Academy was pleased to hosts its first mentoring business breakfast. The business mentoring scheme at the Academy has been running, with great success, for four years now and the event was hosted to enlighten guests from the business community on the value of becoming a business mentor. Businesses were given a full overview of the logistics of how this worthwhile scheme operates as well as hearing reflections from a current business mentor and two current mentees. Guests were also given a guided tour of the Academy"

In recognition of Dementia Awareness Week (Commencing Monday 16th May), members of the Hartley community and myself were keen to hold an event to support initiatives to raise awareness and support those living with dementia.

One such event was hosted by Longfield Academy on Monday 16th May, when a Cream Tea was provided within their Telescope Restaurant.

Invited guests, from the Hartley Memory Café, Carers’ Café, and other community members, attended the event. The students studying Hospitality and Professional Catering prepared and served cream teas to for 34 residents.

It was a lovely afternoon, not least on account of the lovely refreshments. However, many guests and staff complimented the inter-generational dimension of the afternoon.

If any community groups would like to become ‘Dementia Friends’ I am now able to deliver this input following my own Dementia Champion Awareness Training.

As always, if anyone has any concerns they would like to share with me, I can be readily contacted (details below).

Longfield Academy was honored to be presented with a national Rotary Award in April 2016, in recognition of the annual fund raising activities the academy has led in support of the 'Purple Pinkie' fund.

All monies raised at the academy over the last 5 years for Purple Pinkie has been donated to the rotarians in their bid to eradicate polio from the world.

The award was presented to Rotarian Stewart Grainger of the Darenth Rotary Club at the national conference in Bournemouth. Stewart kindly presented it to our Principal students at Longfield, and praised every individual within our academy community for their efforts and support.

We are delighted to continue working with the Dareth Rotarians in many ways including several competitions that they organise for students and for their support of us in the Business Mentor programme.

Thank you for allowing Henry Ripley to represent Great Britain in the Maltese

Open Judo Championships 2016.

This was an extremely hard competition with some 15 countries taking

part. Many National Champions were at this event and in Henry's group. Henry

fought extremely well making us all very proud of his efforts, however, on this

occasion the competition was just too strong, but the experience gained

was invaluable for Henry and has given him targets and pointers to aim for.

In the picture below you see Henry with Paraic Hernon (left), National Masters

Champion and Bill Sargent (right), World Masters and Commonwealth Games

Champion.

Well Done Henry!

We were delighted to participate in the World Irish Dancing Championships in Glasgow earlier on this year.

Over 20 dancers attended from McGahan Lees and the teachers accompanying us were so supportive as our

age group is particularly hard and extremely competitive.

We danced in groups of three which meant we had to make sure we were using all our best communication

skills to ensure there were no accidents or collisions!

Taking part in this event was thrilling with Bethany placed 62nd (her second World Championship) and Kelly

placed 102 in her first ever World Championship competition - we are both really pleased with our placings.

After we have fully recovered from the Glasgow event we will be starting to learn new steps and focus on quali-

fying for the next World Championships in Dublin next year.
