Inserting batteries
This recorder can be used with either Ni-MHRechargeable Batteries or AAA AlkalineBatteries.
1 Slidethebatterycoveropenwhilelightlypressingthebatterycoverreleasebutton.
When charging the recorder, be sureto use the supplied speciied Ni-MHrechargeable (BR401) batteries.
The supplied rechargeable batteriesare not ully charged. Beore usingthe unit the irst time or ater longperiods o disuse, it is recommendedthat you charge them until ull (P.15, P.16).
4 SlidethePOWER/HOLDswitchinthedirectionindicatedbythe
arrow,andturnthepoweron.
3 Closethebatterycovercompletelybypressingtothe
directionA,thenslidingtothedirectionB.
I the hour indicator lashes in thedisplay, see Settingtimeanddate[Time&Date] ( P.20).
Battery indicator
The battery indicator on the display changesas the batteries lose power.
When [:] appears on the display, replacethe batteries as soon as possible. Whenthe batteries are too weak, [ ] and[BatteryLow] appears on the display, therecorder shuts down.

Notes
Manganese batteries may not be used in
this recorder. When changing batteries, AAA alkaline
batteries or Olympus Ni-MH rechargeablebatteries are recommended.
Be sure to stop the recorder beorereplacing the batteries. Unloading thebatteries while the recorder is in use maycorrupt the le. I you are recording intoa le and the batteries run out, you willlose your currently recorded le becausethe le header will not be able to close.It is crucial to change the batteries onceyou see only one Hash mark in the batteryindicator.
I it takes longer than 15 minute to replacethe dead batteries or i you take thebatteries in and out repeatedly at shortintervals, you may have to reset the timewhen you have loaded resh batteries( P.20).
Remove the batteries i you are not goingto use the recorder or an extended periodo time.
When playing a voice/music le, therecorder may be reset due to thereduction o the voltage output o thebatteries depending on the volume leveleven i [8] is displayed in the batteryindicator. In this case, lower the volume othe recorder.
When replacing rechargeable batteries, besure to use Ni-MH rechargeable batteries.The use o other manuacturers' productscan damage the recorder and should beavoided.
Power supply
Charging by connecting to a
computer via USBYou can charge the batteries by connectingto a PC's USB port. When charging, be sureto correctly place the rechargeable batteries(supplied) into the recorder ( P.14).
Do not charge primary batteries such as
alkali or lithium batteries. It may causebattery leakage heating and recordermalunction.

connecttheUSBcabletotheconnectingterminalonthebottomofthisrecorderwhilepressingtheSTOP4button.
[Batt.Chargemode] appears in thedisplay while pressing the STOP4button.
Press and hold the STOP4 buttonuntil [Charging] appears in thedisplay.

Connect to the USB connecting AC
adapter (optional) to chargeIt can be charged by connecting to the USBconnecting AC adapter (A514) (optional).Beore connecting the AC adapter, switchthe USB Connection setting to [ACAdapter]( P.69).

Clearing an index mark or a tempmark:

How to begin segment repeatplayback
This unction enables repeated playback opart o the ile being played.
[ ] will lash on the display. Fast orwarding and rewinding can
be conducted when [ ] is lashingin the same manner as during normalplayback, and you can quicklyproceed as ar as the end position( P.37).
When it reaches to the end o the ilewhile [ ] is lashing, the point willbecome the end position, and repeatplayback will start.

The recorder can record in the linear PCMormat (For DM-550). High resolutionrecording at a high sampling rate and highbit rate equivalent or superior to that oa music CD is possible. Moreover, it alsosupports the MP3 and WMA ormats.

VCVA
When the microphone senses that sounds havereached a preset threshold volume level, thebuilt-in Variable Control Voice Actuator (VCVA)starts recording automatically, and stopswhen the volume drops below the threshold
level. The VCVA eature extends recordingtime and conserves memory by stoppingrecording during silent periods, which helpsthe playback to be more eicient.[On]: Enables the VCVA unction. Will start
recording in VCVA mode.[Off]: Disables this unction. Will resume
recording in normal mode.
