In the 1980s the National Institute or Occupational Saety and Health (NIOSH) identiied the par-

ticulate ound in diesel exhaust as a potential carcinogen, and the International Agency or

Research on Cancer (IARC) identiied it as a probable carcinogen. Numerous epidemiologic stud-

ies have examined the incidence o various cancers among those presumably exposed to diesel

exhaust and have ound a slight increase in lung cancer riska relative risk o less than 2.0. A new

study by the National Cancer Institute (NCI) released in J une 2012, however, ound a

larger increase in relative risk o lung cancer among mine workers and attributed the

increased risk to diesel exhaust, which caused IARC to designate diesel exhaust as a

Group 1 known carcinogen. This new classiication may lead to new toxic tort per-

sonal injury claims. This webcast will provide deense attorneys with an overview
