With the holiday shopping season right around the corner, onlineretailers are gearing up for what could be a recordbreaking year.If you are planning to be one of the millions of people doing theirholiday shopping online – beware. Cyber criminals may be lurkingonline and doing some holiday shopping too – at your expense. Here are some tips for secure online shopping:• Ensure your web browser and antivirus software on your computer or smart device are up-to-date.

• Avoid clicking on links that are sent via email. To visit a particular online retailer, type their URL directly into the web address bar.

• Make sure you are shopping through a reputable online merchant. If you are not sure a merchant’s website is legitimate, do research to check the sites validity before completing a transaction.

Protect Yourself While Shopping Online• Shopping via apps downloaded to smart devices has increasedin popularity and has gained the attention of cyber criminals. Be cautious about apps you download. To avoid downloadingan app infected with malware, that can be used to steal your personal information, only download apps from trusted sources.

• Before providing any personal information, check the retailersprivacy policy to make sure they do not sell your informationto a third party.

• Only initiate online transactions via secure websites. To ensure you are on a secure website look for a padlock icon within your web browser window.
