Cyprus economy improvesMarch has been an eventful month for all of us inCyprus. The European Commission, the IMF andthe European Bank (collectively known as theTroika) have been vigorously assessing progress inCyprus to see whether the ‘roadmap’ to overcomeour difficulties is on track and consequently, willmerit a further injection from the €10billion bailout.

As reported in previous correspondence the list of‘requirements’ is long and detailed requiring thegovernment to lead with determined commitment, pragmatism, and a great deal of diplomacy.According to the IMF press release “The

programme is intended to stabilise the country’s financial system, achieve fiscalsustainability, and support the recovery of economic activity to preserve the welfareof the population”. (Cyprus Mail, 27March)

Surprisingly, in this hour of need, the government and the people are behind the‘programme’ and Cyprus has achieved major milestones in the reform effort. Thegovernment has strengthened the financial sector supervisory and regulatoryframework, has achieved the reduction of the government deficit to 5.4% of GDP(from 6.4% in 2012) and has approved a mechanism for privatisation of semigovernment organisations (SGOs). The government has also been rewarded withthe Troika’s satisfactory assessment and the upgrading of the Cyprus Banks ratingby Moody’s and others to positive CAA3.

All of which, according to the Troika, isgood news for Cyprus. The €10 billioninjection to the economy will seecontinuation of the reform agenda. TheCyprus Government announcement thatall limits on bank cash withdrawal havebeen lifted across the board, even madeto the news desk of Euronews and iswelcomed by citizens and investorsalike!

Popular sentiment seems to be against the big developers who are generally seen tobe the major architects of the present national and banking calamities.

On the property front, Fitzgerald’s office is busy. The interest in Fitzgerald

Properties is growing from clients across the globe. In January we had 60 propertyviewings, 49 in February and 62 in March.

The presence of property Title Deeds is an all important issue with buyers and ourmultilingual staff are constantly on the go sharing their linguistic talents withEnglish, German, Russian, Flemish, Africaans, Polish and Greek clients. Muchinterest is driven by lower prices but a substantial number of buyers ultimately lookfor quality. Build quality, quality of project and neighbourhood and, even thestandard of furniture and soft furnishings play a major role in the buying decision.
