Metallica Death Magnetic

Page 2: Digipak analysis

This is the digipak for the special edition version of the Metallica album ‘Death Magnetic’. The cover of the album is quite basic as it shows an outline of a coffin in the center with what appear to iron filings around it in some sort of magnetic field. This symbolizes the album title well as the coffin signifies death and the iron filings symbolize the magnetism or the ‘Magnetic’ aspect of the title. Upon opening the digipak you can see the overall colour scheme of the album. The colours are dark and grungy which is common of most rock/metal albums. Upon closer inspection it can be seen that the booklet for the album has the center of the pages cut out to show the coffin image on the final page. This is slightly annoying as by doing this the centres of the pages containing some of the lyrics have been removed. I think that this album is more focused towards a mainstream audience due to the amount of campaigning and advertisements that were released for the album and that also the presentation and style of the digipak is a much different concept than some of the albums they have released in the past.
