WHAT IS DIGITAL CITIZENSHIP?• A DIGITAL CITIZEN IS SOMEONE WHOSE DIGITAL ENVIRONMENT CONSIST OF

WEB-BASED COMMUNICATION AND COLLABORATION TOOLS AS PART OF HIS OR HER DAILY ROUTINE TO SHARE IDEAS, PLANS ACTIVITIES, AND STAY IN TOUCH WITH OTHERS.

• BEING RESPONSIBLE WHEN IT COMES TO THE USE OF TECHNOLOGY.

CLASSROOM RULES FOR CELL PHONES

• IN OUR CLASSROOM STUDENTS WILL OPENLY USE CELLPHONES IN THE CLASSROOM TO PARTICIPATE IN ACTIVE DISCUSSION AND ASSIGNMENTS. STUDENTS WILL HAVE RULES AND PROCEDURES FOR USING THEIR CELL PHONES IN THE CLASSROOM THOUGH.

• RULES FOR USING CELL PHONES IN THE CLASSROOM:

1. STUDENTS MUST ONLY USE CELL PHONES DURING TIMES DESIGNATED BY THE TEACHER FOR LEARNING PURPOSES.

2. STUDENTS SHOULD KEEP THEIR CELLULAR DEVICES ON SILENT AND NO VIBRATE AT ALL TIMES.

3. CELL PHONES MUST REMAIN ON UPPER RIGHT HAND CORNER OF THEIR DESKS AT ALL TIMES FACING DOWNWARD EXCEPT FOR WHEN DESIGNATED BY THE TEACHER. THIS WILL PREVENT DISTRACTIONS FOR THE USER AND OTHER STUDENTS IN THE CLASSROOM.

4. EVERY IMAGE CAPTURED IN CLASS AND VOICE RECORDING MUST BE APPROVED BY THE TEACHER AND ALL COPYRIGHT LAWS MUST BE FOLLOWED.

5. MAKE SURE YOU KNOW YOUR DATA PLAN. THIS NEEDS TO BE DISCUSSED WITH A GUARDIAN TO ENSURE ABLE USE IN THE CLASSROOM (THE SCHOOL SYSTEM WILL NOT BE RESPONSIBLE FOR IN ACCRUED CHARGES.)

6. ALL INFORMATION INSERTED ON CELL PHONES IS PUBLIC. KEEP IN MIND WHATEVER IS WRITTEN ONLINE LASTS FOREVER AND ANYONE CAN FIND IT.

7. ANY FORM OF BULLYING OR HARASSMENT WILL NOT BE TOLERATED IN ANY FORM.

• STUDENTS WHO WISH TO NOT FOLLOW THESE RULES WILL BE DISMISSED FROM THE USE OF CELLPHONES IN THE CLASSROOM AND MAY FACE DISCIPLINARY ACTION.

SOCIAL NETWORKING AND CYBERBULLYING

POLICIES

• AS A SCHOOL, WE WILL HAVE A POLICY AND PLAN IN PLACE FOR SOCIAL NETWORKING AND CYBERBULLYING TO PROTECT OUR STUDENTS ON A DAILY BASIS. THIS POLICY/PLAN WILL INCLUDE, BUT NOT BE LIMITED TO THE FOLLOWING:

• CLEAR STATEMENTS PROHIBITING BULLYING, CYBERBULLYING, AND RETALIATION

• STEPS ON HOW TO ANONYMOUSLY REPORT BULLYING TO ADMINISTRATION

• PROCEDURES FOR INVESTIGATING INCIDENTS, TAKING DISCIPLINARY ACTIONS AGAINST PERPETRATORS

• MAKING OUR STUDENTS FEEL SAFE

• PROVISION OF AGE-APPROPRIATE AND EVIDENCE-BASED INSTRUCTION ON BULLYING PREVENTION

• ONGOING PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT TO BUILD THE SKILLS OF ALL STAFF MEMBERS

• PLANS FOR INFORMING PARENTS AND GUARDIANS ABOUT THE SCHOOL’S BULLYING PREVENTION CURRICULUM, INCLUDING HOW PARENTS CAN REINFORCE THE CURRICULUM AT HOME, AND EDUCATION REGARDING ONLINE SAFETY AND CYBER-BULLYING.

EMAIL AND INTERNET SAFETY

• PHISHING IS AN ATTEMPT TO GAIN ACCESS TO YOUR CONFIDENTIAL INFORMATION (PASSWORDS, USERNAMES, BANK ACCOUNTS, PINS, ETC.) BY POSING AS A TRUSTWORTHY ORGANIZATION. EXAMPLES OF SITES OFTEN IMPERSONATED BY PHISHERS INCLUDE FINANCIAL INSTITUTIONS (YOUR BANK, PAYPAL), ECOMMERCE SITES (AMAZON, EBAY), SOCIAL MEDIA SITES (FACEBOOK, TWITTER) AND EVEN WHITMAN COLLEGE. PHISHERS MAY ASK YOU TO RESPOND BY REPLY EMAIL, BY FILLING OUT A FORM ON A WEBSITE, OR BY CALLING A PHONE NUMBER. FREQUENTLY, THEY'LL CLAIM YOU'VE WON A PRIZE OR THREATEN YOU WITH SOME ACTION, SUCH AS DELETION OF YOUR ACCOUNT, IF YOU DO NOT RESPOND.

• THE MOST COMMON FORM OF PHISHING EMAIL ATTEMPTS TO DUPE THE RECEIVER INTO CLICKING A LINK TO A FRAUDULENT WEBSITE, WHERE THE VICTIM IS ASKED TO ENTER PERSONAL INFORMATION.

• OTHER CONVENTIONAL PLOYS: "PLEASE CLICK TO VERIFY YOUR ACCOUNT." "YOU HAVE WON ONE MILLION DOLLARS." "YOUR ACCOUNT WILL BE DEACTIVATED IF YOU DON'T RESPOND WITHIN X HOURS."

• DO NOT OPEN OR RESPOND TO ANY EMAILS OR WEBSITES IF YOU ARE UNSURE OF THE SENDER, UNLESS AN ADULT IS PRESENT.

DIGITAL ACCESS

• STUDENTS WILL HAVE ACCESS TO TECHNOLOGY DEVICES THROUGHOUT THE SCHOOL TERM. STUDENTS WILL BE EXPECTED TO COLLABORATE, MASTER STANDARDS, AND SHOW PROFICIENCY THROUGH THE USE OF TECHNOLOGY THROUGH THE DIGITAL ACCESS.

• STUDENTS WILL BEGIN EACH CLASS PERIOD BY USING THEIR CELLPHONES TO CAPTURE A PICTURE OF THEIR HOMEWORK TO SUBMIT FOR FORMATIVE ASSESSMENT. ONCE STUDENTS HAVE A TAKEN A PICTURE OF THEIR HOMEWORK THEY WILL BE EXPECTED TO SEND THE PICTURE THROUGH TEXT MESSAGE. IF THE HOMEWORK IS ASSIGNED THROUGH THE USE OF TECHNOLOGY IT SHOULD BE EMAILED TO THE TEACHER BY THE BEGINNING OF CLASS.

• STUDENTS WILL THEN COMPLETE ANY RESEARCH ASSIGNMENTS THROUGH THE USE OF CLASSROOM COMPUTERS. STUDENTS SHOULD FOLLOW ALL INTERNET AND COMPUTER PROCEDURES.

• STUDENTS WILL HAVE CLASS DISCUSSIONS TO PARTICIPATE IN THROUGH THE USE OF SOCIAL MEDIA SITES SUCH AS TWITTER.

• STUDENTS WILL TAKE WEEKLY ASSESSMENTS ONLINE THROUGH THE USE OF COMPUTERS OR IPADS.

• STUDENTS WILL ALSO BE REQUIRED TO REFERENCE HOMEWORK ASSIGNMENTS VIA TEXT MESSAGE. ALL HOMEWORK ASSIGNMENTS WILL BE SENT VIA TEXT MESSAGE.

ACCEPTABLE TECHNOLOGY USE POLICY • THE FOLLOWING IS AN EXTRACT OF THE COMPLETE AUP AS IT APPLIES TO USE OF THE PARENT ASSISTANT MODULE. THE COMPLETE

AUP IS AVAILABLE UPON REQUEST FROM YOUR CHILD’S SCHOOL OR ONLINE AT INFORMATION-TECHNOLOGY/FORMS, AND CLICK THE STUDENT ACCEPTABLE USE POLICY LINK.

• THE DISTRICT’S ACCEPTABLE USE POLICY (“AUP”) (SET FORTH THROUGH BOARD POLICY 8.60.040-P) IS TO PREVENT UNAUTHORIZED ACCESS AND OTHER UNLAWFUL ACTIVITIES BY USERS ONLINE, PREVENT UNAUTHORIZED DISCLOSURE OF OR ACCESS TO SENSITIVE INFORMATION, AND TO COMPLY WITH THE CHILDREN’S INTERNET PROTECTION ACT (“CIPA”).
