Lesson Overview• In this lesson, students first read fiction

and nonfiction accounts about different types of disasters.

• The class then uses Skype and Instant Messaging to interview students in a different part of the country about natural or manmade disasters in their area.

• The students will utilize listserv to communicate with the teacher and class.

Lesson Steps• Students will explore nonfiction and fiction books about

disasters and survivors.• Teacher will initiate contact with a class in a school in an

area of interest to students. Ideas include places where students have already survived a flood, a fire, a volcano, or an earthquake. The disaster can be man-made or natural.

• Students will use a K-W-L chart (K: what I Know , W: what I Want to learn & L: what I Learned) to gather information on what they know about that type of disaster and to form the topics of inquiry that interest them.

• Students will use the Internet and other resources to complete background research about the type of disaster as well as the geographical area of the class they will chat with. They should also make sure they are prepared to answer questions about disasters in their area.

Lesson Steps, cont.• Students will work in small groups to prepare interview

questions for their chat with the other class.• The teacher, in a whole group activity, conducts the

chat with the other class using Skype and instant messaging while students participate.

• After the chat, the students use their background research and what they learned from the other class to each write a fictional first-person account of surviving the disaster they discussed.

• Utilize a listserv class in order to communicate with the teacher and the other students what has been learned about other areas and the disasters encountered there.

Outcomes• After completing this lesson, students

will:– Have a greater understanding of natural

and man-made disasters– Use a variety of resources to conduct

research on a topic– Work cooperatively to prepare interview

Lesson Overview• In this lesson, students in three classes in different

locations become Poetry experts as they use Skype and instant messaging to teach and learn from each other about different poetic styles.

• Six types of poetry are taught: limerick, haiku, acrostic, couplet, cinquain, and concrete.

• First, each teacher introduces a type of poem to his or her class.

• Students in each class practice writing their own poems in that style.

• Students in that class will then introduce that poetic style to the other classes.

• At the end, students will use a listserv topic to communicate what they have learned to the teacher and peers.

Lesson Steps• Partner with two other classes and determine

the schedule for chatting with each class.• In the first week, each teacher introduces a

different poetic style to their class; for example: Class A does cinquain, Class B, concrete, and Class C, haiku.

• Students in each class write and edit their own examples of poems in the first style they have learned.

• Students share their poems with their assigned group. Each group selects one poem to share with the class they are teaching.

Lesson Steps, cont.• Each group prepares one part of a lesson, modeled

after the teacher’s introductory lesson, to teach the other classes about the poetry form they have just learned.

• The teacher monitors each group to ensure they have a clear presentation and examples.

• Students have a Skype chat or Skype video calling with both of the other classes to teach their assigned poetic form and a video Skype chat to learn a new poetic form from each of the other classes.

• Students in the class learning the poetic form use chat and text messaging to ask questions during the presentation.

• After learning two new forms of poetry, each student writes a poem using those styles.

Lesson Steps, cont.• After the first three forms of poetry are introduced,

each teacher introduces their class to another form of poetry, for example: Class A does limerick, Class B, couplet, and Class C, acrostic.

• Repeat the same process to learn the next three forms.

• Note: If having the students teach is not realistic for your situation, this project can be adapted so that the teachers deliver the instruction but the students share examples of each type of poem and perform a Poetry Presentation at the end.

• Access the listserv group topic for the class and email the entire group about what you have learned and taught to the other classes.

Outcomes• After completing this lesson,

students will be able to:– Describe the characteristics of and
