I. INTRODUCTION

eKitabu is Kenya’s leading digital content distributor with educational ebooks and interactive content from Kenyan and international publishers including Jomo Kenyatta Foundation, Kenya Literature Bureau, Longhorn Publishers, Moran Publishers, Mountain Top Publishers, Oxford University Press, Cambridge University Press, and many more. eKitabu has over 350,000 ebooks in inventory, over 2,000 approved by KICD for Kenya’s 8-4-4 curriculum. Since 2012 eKitabu has been a member of the Kenya Publishers Association (KPA). At the Nairobi International Book Fair in September 2014 KPA pledged to Kenya’s Ministry of Education, Science and Technology to deliver KICD-approved digital content from Kenya’s leading publishers to the Digital Literacy Programme pilot schools at no charge to MOE. Upon receiving formal authorization from MOE in early 2015, eKitabu delivered comprehensive packages of digital content for Standard 1 – 3 to all 4 pilot schools in four separate counties, and loaded the content packages on all available DLP pilot devices. Accordingly this report documents the completion of the project together with all relevant details.



II. PROJECT OBJECTIVES The purpose of the project was to provide support to the Government of Kenya Digital Literacy Program Pilot by providing KICD approved digital content from Kenya’s leading educational publishers. The content was to be provided for free to support the government’s vision in the schools. The four pilot project schools were:

1. Mbogo Vale Primary School – Tinderet (Nandi County)

2. Muchungucha Primary School – Murang’a (Murang’a County)

3. St. Andrew’s Kaggwa Nyasiongo Boys Boarding Primary School – Nyamira (Nyamira County)

4. St. Paul’s Primary School – Maralal (Samburu County)



III. PROJECT APPROVAL

eKitabu in partnership with the Kenya Publishers Association (KPA) made a formal request for approval to implement the project from the Ministry of Education Science & Technology. MOE issued its written approval on 10th March 2015:

IV. IMPLEMENTATION

eKitabu planned the delivery to occur in the period from July through early September 2015 to align with the end of the second school term and the beginning of third term.

A. Ebooks Package for Standard 1 – 3

eKitabu and KPA collaborated closely to assemble an appropriate and comprehensive package of digital content from the Kenyan publishing firms represented. The package included course books, revision materials, supplementary books, and readers approved by KICD for Class 1 through Class 3. The total number of books in the package was 112. The ebook packages were to be installed in each of the devices delivered to the four pilot schools. The complete itemized list of the ebooks delivered together with the cost of each ebook is attached as an exhibit to this document. The total cost of the ebooks delivered and was shared between eKitabu and KPA was as follows: BOOKS CONTRIBUTED KES 2,252,000.00 DELIVERY & INSTALLATION KES 292,000.00 TOTAL DIRECT COST KES 2,544,000.00



B. Preparation of Ebooks Packages

The eKitabu team prepared the files for each and every computer before taking them to the individual site.

The process allows bulk downloading of files since each machine needs its own local copies for offline use as

Internet was unreliable or totally unavailable in the schools. Through this process all books are also copy-

protected by Digital Rights Management from unauthorized reproduction.

C. Delivery & Installation

After the above process the eKitabu team set out to do the deliveries to the four schools working through the guidance of the relevant county education offices according to our instructions from MOE. eKitabu also delivered Teacher Training out on the installation and use of ebooks after the installations in each of these schools.

V. OBSERVATIONS & COMMENTS

During visits to the schools our team reported these observations: 1. The respective county education offices were very supportive to the initiative. 2. The schools’ head teachers, teachers, and students were excited to have our team at their school and

about having digital content in the laptops. They gave a warm welcome to the team. 3. The pilot schools had well-furnished computer labs which are kept clean as well.

4. The devices are kept in secure, well-constructed strong rooms. 5. The devices are ruggedized and of good quality suitable for kids’ use.

VI. CHALLENGES ENCOUNTERED

During the delivery our team met few challenges:

1. Two machines in both Muchungucha Primary School in Murang’a and St. Paul’s Primary School in Samburu could not boot. Our team left backup files for those machines with the teachers in charge so they could install them once the machines were in working condition. The team made sure they trained the teacher on how to do the installation.

2. Due to the teachers’ strike and the delay of school opening for the third term 2015, we had to delay

delivery of the content until the teachers returned to the schools.
