Mr. Roger ToussaintPrincipal Secretary for the Departmentof Industry and EntrepreneurshipDevelopment (July 2017-January 2019)

The principal role of the Departmentof Industry and EntrepreneurshipDevelopment is to assist with the creation of the enabling environment through the formulation of effective policies that will address the challenges which impact the growth of Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs).

MSMEs makes up more than 80% of the total number of businesses in Seychelles contributing to a spectrum of sector from Child Minding Services to Creative Industries and Light Manufacturing activities. They are the major source of job creation in any modern day economy.

Therefore they are not only significant tothe economy, they are the economy.

As a Department, we therefore cannotdisregard the challenges that MSMEs face.In order to help the MSMEs overcomethe barriers stifling their growth, we needto gather our partners and collectivelydirect our efforts at increasing thecompetitiveness of this sector.

This can be done by enhancing the availability of affordable credit, promoting innovation and technology, providing adequate infrastructure and incentives, meeting the demand for skills development and capacity building and more importantly, provide them with sufficient information.

Since the formation of our Departmentin 2017, we have participated in differentbusiness forums to explain about theopportunities available in terms of thevarious initiatives that exist and howwe intend to put forward new policiesthat will make them more accessible tobusiness promoters.

As such, this booklet provides valuable and tangible information to MSMEs on how to start a business and other requirement that are necessary for them to grow and achieve sustainable growth.Let us be reminded of the famousobservation made by Bill Gates:

“Business people need to shake off the notion that information is hard to get”

STEP 1. CHOOSE YOUR BUSINESSEVALUATE YOURSELFUse these questions to guide what kind ofbusiness you want to start:

• Why do you want to start a business?• What skills do you have?• Where does your passion lie?• Where is your area of expertise?• How much can you afford to spend?• How much capital do you need?

THINK OF A BUSINESS IDEADo you already have an excellent business idea?If so, congratulations, you can proceed to the step 2. If not:

• Ask yourself what technology or advancement is coming soon, and how will thatchange the business landscape?• If your business can fix a problem for your customers, they will thank you for it.• Apply your skills to entirely new field; A fresh set of eyes from a new perspectivecan make all the difference.• Think about the current offerings and focus on how you can create somethingbetter, cheaper or faster.

CONDUCT A MARKET RESEARCHIs anyone else already doing what you want to start doing? If not, is there a goodreason why? Start researching your potential competitors or partners within themarket. For example, you can conduct interviews by telephone or face to face. Youcan also conduct surveys or ask questions like:“What factors do you consider when purchasing this product or service?” and“What areas would you suggest for improvement?”

X CLEANING AGENCYMR X

BACKGROUND AND DESCRIPTION OF THE BUSINESSAs a consultant in archival conservation and preservation services of books andpaper records, this poses a defining opportunity for my business to provide cleaningand preservation services of important corporate documents as well as records suchas archives, documents that needs to be conserved. There is a lot of potential in suchservices not only archival conservation but in private offices and homes whereby; personal library can be cleaned with environmentally friendly products. The project is being conceived to start up with industrial steam cleaner, vacuum cleaner as well as an assorted environmentally friendly cleaning products.

VISION OF THE BUSINESSMy vision is to introduce a new concept in restoration and preservation of archivesdocuments and books as well as provide exceptional housekeeping services. The idea is to differentiate the business from its competitors and bolster the cause of keeping the service more reliable as well as affordable.

SHORT TERM OBJECTIVES (Up to 1 Year)• To be a customer focused business which will listen to customers by providing themsuperior service exceeding their expectations, thus, earning their trust and respect.• To consistently believe in originality and innovation;• To recognize the responsibility and opportunity to contribute to society and make ameaningful difference.

MEDIUM TERM OBJECTIVES (1-3 years)To increase our customer base from private clients and small commercial to majorcommercial companies.

LONG TERM OBJECTIVES (3 years and above)To become the leading service provider in archival restoration and preservation of books.

MANAGEMENT AND ORGANISATION STRUCTUREI obtained extensive experience having worked in the archives for many years and restoring historical documents. Therefore, I will provide the service whereas my daughter will manage the administrative aspect of the business.

6

Page 9: Digital copy available upon request STEPS...2019/10/04  · Digital copy available upon request Mr. Roger Toussaint Principal Secretary for the Department of Industry and Entrepreneurship

PRODUCT/ SERVICEThe business will be actively engaged in book cleaning, archival conservation, cleaning of libraries , registries , archives and repositories by using archival conservation methods, equipment and environmentally friendly cleaning products. There will also be a house keeping service where houses or buildings will be cleaned ceiling to floor.

MARKET ANALYSISCustomers will be corporate clients such as law firms, government offices, insurancecompanies (basically any parties that have a large amount of paper works in files)the rest could be private individuals. It is important to note that such service not beingoffered in Seychelles.

PRICEGiven that we are potentially the only ones providing this unique service, we willenjoy a low competition service therefore we can afford to keep our prices very low.

DISTRIBUTIONServices can be done throughout the inner islands as per demand.

PROMOTIONSince this is a very niche service and new to Seychelles, X Cleaning Agency will haveto be aggressive on its initial promotion and marketing strategies. Word of mouth fromour excellent customer care will also help get us new clients.

RISKS AND ASSUMPTIONSThe business will have an annual conservative revenue growth rate of 5% per year witha light payroll. The risks is fairly minimal as the service is very unique and there isno competitor. The assumptions would be to expect lower growth but clientele couldgrow faster than anticipated.
