The silent protagonist o Digital Devil Saga you $ill be stepping into Serphs
shoes" 9y nature he seems to be a clever leader! one $hose talented leadership
has enabled the relatively small Bmbryon tribe to hold their o$n against the
larger tribes all around them" Al$ays calm and collected Serph is deerred to
as the leader o the Bmbryon and carries a great amount o respect rom those
$ho serve under him"
'hen the $hite light comes to the Cun&yard all things begin to change and the
inhabitants o the Cun&yard begin to sho$ emotions and true personalities"
Serph does not ho$ever" 'hile there are some hints o an emerging nature and
some signs o emotion he tends to be in something o a limbo"

Stats: Serph is the only character you can customiGe so his stats can progress
ho$ever you li&e" #t is in your best interest to ensure that his stats
develop in a $ell rounded manner" There are items you can ind later on
to let you boost his stats" #tHs suggested you come up $ith a system or
distributing his points" Something along the lines o I1 Strength! I1
Jitality and I1 Agility at odd levels! I1 Magic! I1 Jitality and I1 uc&
at even levels is a air idea but you can really do ;ust about anything"

Serphs demon orm seems to be based on the Jedic deity Jaruna! a god o the
s&y! rain and the celestial ocean" 5e $as also considered to be a chie deity
o la$ and the under$orld" Jaruna is largely given dominion over all orms o
the $ater element especially oceans" This carried over $hen he $as introduced
to 5induism" 'hich explains a lot about Serph being an ice user"
Jaruna is regarded as a solar deity and he ocuses more on morality than he
does $ith being $orshipped" Another peculiar thing is that he is considered to
be a god o the dead! capable o granting immortality" Many o these things
only seem partially connected to the game at hand" 5o$ever as you get urther
into the game and its se2uel things start to ma&e a bit more sense"

Argilla

Acting as the sniper o the Bmbryons elite troops Argilla seems to ta&e on the
role o scout" Argilla is one o the e$ people in the Cun&yard $ho accepts
very 2uic&ly that something strange is going on" >eusing to ac&no$ledge the
changes that are happening to her she initially avoids eating her allen oes
out o disgust" #t doesnHt ta&e long or this to turn around but it is a strong
testament to her character"
Argilla is deinitely the conscience o the group" She can be pretty ruthless
$hen the situation calls or it but overall she is deinitely a compassionate
person" ut o all the characters in the Bmbryon she is the irst one to
seemingly see a problem $ith having to devour your once human enemies"

Stats: Argilla puts most o her stat points into her Magic rating" 5er Strength
and Jitality $ill usually lag behind $hile her Agility and uc& $ill be
some$hat mediocre" As such she ma&es or 2uite the perect spellcaster"
'henever you need someone to act as a magic user or a battle she should
al$ays be your irst choice"

.rithivi is &no$n to be a mother goddess in the 5indu religion as $ell as beingan earth goddess" She is &no$n to be the $ie o Dyaus! &no$n as ather Dyaus!
and may have originally been part o a single deity previously" .rithivi acts
as the opposite to Dyaus acting in the opposite dichotomy o earth and s&y
along $ith her husband"
She is the mother o both #ndra and Agni and $hen #ndra sle$ Dyaus she not
only applauded him or it but she married him" #n other belies she $as one o
the $ives o Jishnu and acted as another orm o the goddess a&shmi although
seemingly $ith a dierent elemental ocus" As a mother goddess she seems to
have held the belies o protection and nurtering $hich meshes $ith Argilla"

5eat seems to have the role o the muscle amongst the Bmbryon! li&ely acting as
a bodyguard to Serph beore the event" #t is 5eat $ho begins to sho$ the irst
signs o emotion due to the blaGing rage that seems to be building up $ithin
this po$erul $arrior" 5e has absolutely no problems $ith devouring his enemies
and $ill do ;ust about anything to deeat those $ho get in his $ay"
'hile he acts as the stereotypical hothead in the group 5eat has a deep seated
secret 4 his emotions or this mysterious blac&4haired girl" The eelings that
he has or her drive him to do a number o things that seem conusing even to
him" Some o them even seem to pain him but he $ill not stop" *alling 5eat
persistant $ould be an understatement"

Stats: 9eitting his sometimes brutish nature Agni has most o his stat points
placed into his Strength and Jitality" This ma&es him 2uite a po$erhouse
$ith physical attac&s but by the late game this $ill ta&e its toll on
his magical capabilities" Barly on this isnHt 2uite a problem but it
becoms a big issue later on" 5e can still cast spells but he is lac&ing"
Focusing on physical attac& superiority as $ell as resistances to enemy
spells is a good use o his abilities" This orces him to get reduced in
eectiveness and he starts to ta&e second iddle to (ale"

Agni is the t$o headed god o ire and the acceptor o sacriice" 5e is one o
the most important Jedic gods" 'hile he is po$erul he is the messenger o the
gods and carries all sacriices made to both himsel and the other gods to the
rest o the pantheon" 5is appearance is a red t$o4headed beast $hich represent
both the destructive and benevolent 2ualities he possesses"
Agni is one o the e$ Jedic gods to have survived into modern 5induism" no$n
or his ever young nature he is 2uite immortal" 'hile this reusal to truly die
doesnHt really ma&e much sense in the context o the irst game! Agnis loyalty
and un$illingness to pass on ma&es much more sense late in the second game"

(ale is the voice o logic and reason amongst the Bmbryon" 'here as the other
characters are rapidly over$helmed by their emotions and start to act on them
he remains ocused and detached" This paired $ith his natural intellect and
cunning ma&es him the ideal it as the Bmbryons tactician! guiding the team and
creating the plans that Serph used to lead them to victory" 5is intellect and
Serphs leadership are very li&ely $hy such a small tribe $as able to stay as
strong as they $ere in the Cun&yard or so long"
5o$ever he is not let ully untouched by the strange light that gave everyone
their Atma" 5e has begun thin&ing in $ays that $ould never have been possible
beore! coming up $ith deceitul plans that sho$ a remar&able $illingness to
brea& the previously iron4clad la$s o the Cun&yard"

Stats: (aleHs stats are pretty evenly thro$n about Strength! Magic $ith a
secondary ocus on Jitality although his Agility and Magic can drag bac&
2uite a bit later on" 5o$ever due to his point spread he can ill ;ust
about any role! be it bac&4up spellcaster or bac&4up physical attac&er"
'hile heHs not great at any one role he $or&s $ell in a variety o
situations" 5e $ill oten ind his $ay into your party as the third man"

and breath he is considered to be one o the most po$erul deities and is most
integral to the $orld itsel since $ithout breath there can be no lie"

Due to his po$er and attachment to lie itsel Jayu $as considered to be a very
important god" The %panishads! important 5indu scriptures! have a number o

most noticeable changes" @ot only did he gain emotion but he gained it in a
rather spectacular ashion" (oing rom a 2uiet member o the tribe to a $isemouthed! high on lie ;o&ester caught many o guard and is the most $ild o
the changes brought on by the light! second only to 5eat" ThatHs to say nothing
o the $eird *arribean accent he pic&s up"
More than ;ust that *ielo seems to have the greatest grasp o ;ust ho$ $rong
things are" 5e is able to sense that everything is not as it should be and the
very $orld they live in has some la$s in it that he cannot 2uite igure out"
This light hearted boy in a mans body might ;ust hold the &ey to understanding
the $orld the Bmbryon inhabits"

Stats: *ielo suers rom some rather poor design decisions in regards to his
stat gro$th" Most o his development is ocused entirely on his Agility $ith a
secondary ocus on uc&" astly come his Magic! Strength and Jitality in more
or less that order" Due to this he is 2uite good at evading attac&s and hitting
your oes but he ta&es a lot o damage rom physical and magical attac&s unless
you do something to protect him" %sing the @oise items ater youHve already
bued up Serph as much as you li&e is a good $ay to ma&e him more useable"
K @TB: To solve the problem o his obnoxious $ea&nesses you $ill $ant to send
him do$n the Status Ailment path! getting him the @ull s&ills that $ill protect
him rom Status Ailments" # you can get him @ull Ailment itsel then that is
a much better choice and saves on space"

husband to .rithivi EArgillaL and ather o both Agni and #ndra" #t seems as
i he $as not originally a Jedic god and may have come do$n due to exposure to
other religions as he seems to be a derivative o one o the other many thunder
and lightning type gods o the s&y"
Stories state that Dyaus $as &illed by #ndra at some point although the exact
details o this encounter are not clear" 5e doesnHt seem to have been held as
highly as many o the other gods at the time though and his contributions to
the religions seem to mainly consist o being the ather o #ndra and Agni"

This mysterious blac& haired girl $a&es up in a strange egg loo&ing device that
appears in the middle o the Cun&yard one day" Bven ignoring her strange hair
color she has a peculiar ability! that o song" 9y singing a particular tune
she can instantly calm anyones demon orm even those succumbing to hunger rage"
'hat ma&es this even more peculiar is that there is no such thing as song in
the Cun&yard" 'here this girl came and $ho she truly is orms a ma;or plot
element or this game"

2uests and other optional events into the main storyline" 5o$ever i you are
loo&ing only or side 2uest inormation you should use the search unction"

Ammo: The bullets each character can e2uip $ith their respective guns" These
are useul but no so much so that you should buy them too oten" ou can
ind them oten enough"
Atma: The mysterious mar&ings that have appeared on the various Tribes have
inused them $ith this mysterious po$er" And even more oreign emotions"
Atma .oints: (ained at the end o every battle these are ho$ you master the
various Mantra you can ac2uire"
9lue @ode: These are the loating blue prisms that you see around the $orld"
Bssentially these are this games version o treasure chests"
Field 5unt: Sometimes you $ill come across an area $here $ea& demons are elt"
#n these areas you can hunt the $ea& demons and then ight the
po$erul Mitama demons or lots o A." This has its o$n section"
(old @ode: These are the loating gold prisms that you see around the $orld"
Much rarer than the blue ones these are this games rare chests"Cun&yard: This is the location o the events in Digital Devil Saga 1 EDDS" #t
seems to ta&e place in some post apocalyptic version o the $orld $e

arge arma Terminal: ou can save your game at any arma Terminal but you can
also restore your 5.3M. or a price and teleport to any
other T in the dungeon" More oten than not you $ill be
visiting these or purchasing ne$ Mantra"
ie Terminal: A glo$ing green terminal that you can pay to restore your 5. and
M. at" These are some$hat rare so donHt count on them"
Macca: 'hat is used as currency in the Cun&yard" This is a$arded ater a battle
by the arma Temple $ho re$ards 2uic& and brutal combat tactics $ith
increased money" %sed at the Jendor to buy supplies and get Mantra rom
the arma Terminals" #t can be hard to come buy so use it smartly"
Mantra: The programs that you can do$nload that teach you the various s&ills"
Mastering use o the Mantra (rid is essential to advancement"@irvana: The paradise that a$aits the Tribe that prevails in the Cun&yard" This
is the ultimate goal o all o the various Tribes and the reason that
they ight so hard"
.ress Turn: This is both the name o the combat system and the hexagon shapes
in the upper right corner o the combat screen" The .ress Turn
combat system is explained in more detail belo$"
>e;uvenating ight: Bssentially these are ie Terminals that are entirely ree
to use" our entire party $ill be ully restored by using
one o these" Sadly there are only t$o in the $hole game"
Small arma Terminal: These are much more limited than the arge arma Terminal
and you can only save your game and get ne$ Mantra here"
ou can also teleport to any T in the dungeon"
Tribe: ne Tribe rules each section o the Cun&yard" These various groups are
ighting to be the one last standing $ho $ill rule the Cun&yard and then
ascend to @irvana"
Jendor: This is $here you $ill buy and sell basic items" Since there is no
$eapons or armor you $ill not need to buy too much rom them"

Solar @oise

As you move around the Cun&yard you $ill notice the number in the top let
portion o the screen changing" This is called Solar @oise and represents the
changing eects that the data can have on demons" There are nine levels to the
Solar @oise count! it starts at 03, and $or&s itHs $ay up to ,3, beore going
bac& do$n to 0" 'hen the Solar @oise is at 03, itHs represented as M#@ and $hen
itHs at ,3, itHs represented as MA"
'here the Solar @oise type element had a big eect in other Shin Megami Tensei
games itHs not too important in the Cun&yard" The main eects that it has are:

is igured independantly or each character"
4 The M#@3MA *ritical s&ills ma&e use o the Solar @oise 2uite heavily"
4 'hen using an Bstoma Spray or Magic >eed the eects $ill last until the
next M#@ Solar @oise" Thus to get the best out o it you $ill $ant to use it
$hen Solar @oise is at the minimum already"
Solar @oise plays a much more important role in the se2uel but or no$ you $ill
be able to ignore it or the most part"

Status Ailments

Status ailments are a po$erul tool both or or against you" Many enemies are
immune or resistant to many orms o attac& and then have a $ea&ness to status
ailments" *ielo! your ith party member! also has a $ea&ness to it as $ell"
Ma&ing good use o status ailments can ma&e hard battles 2uite a bit easier"
%sing the status ailment healing spells is a $aste o time since &eeping one
o them set is usually a $aste o a s&ill slot" #nstead ma&e sure to have a
good amount o curative items! bet$een 10 to /0 o each type o item" 'ith some
orethought you can also render yoursel immune to status ailments or at least
able to heal very 2uic&ly rom it"

==============*ombat in Digital Devil Saga uses a system that $as devised or the Shin Megami
Tensei games" #t $as irst used in SMT: @octurne! the spiritual predecessor to
the DDS games! and returns here" ater on it $ill even appear! in a modiied
orm! in .ersona 6 and its expansion FBS" Bvery time it has appeared in a ne$
game there have been a small number o changes made to the system itsel"
This combat system is called the .ress Turn system and it $or&s as ollo$s" At
the start o a ight you $ill have a number o hexagonal icons in the upper
right corner o the screen! as many as you have party members Eso three max"
'henever you ta&e an action! be it attac&ing! using items or casting magic you
$ill ta&e up one turn icon"
The irst person to act $ill be the irst person in your party se2uential line
up and then moving do$n the line" nce you have used up all o your turn icons
the enemy $ill go" 9asic enemies $ill get one icon per enemy Eup to our or
ive depending on the enemy in 2uestion $hile harder enemies $ill get up to
t$o actions per round" 9osses $ill usually get at least t$o turns and regularly
have access to spells that $ill give them a number o extra turns"

These lashing icons are the actual .ress Turns in 2uestion" 'henever you hit
an enemy by stri&ing at their $ea&ness! land a *ritical hit or pass your turn

place o regular turns or pretty much any sort o action Ealthough passing a
hal turn is basically a $aste" n the other hand i you hit an enemy $ith a
