Task 2File format Suitable

destinationJustification Size

jpg On-screen display or internet exchange of large low-resolution photographs

May look good on-screen and may produce nice in print outs, but it is not suitable for high resolution commercial printing.

Small size

gif Used to display indexed-colour graphics and images in HTML documents on the web

Not a good format for saving photographic type images with many colours. GIF is good for saving images with flat blocks of colour such as logos or simple illustrations.

Small size

tiff image manipulation programs, desktop publishing and 3-D imaging applications

TIFF is good for any type of bitmap (pixel-based) images. TIFF produces large files, but there is no loss in quality.

Large file

png Display of images on the web.

Unlike GIF, PNG supports 24-bit images and produces background transparency without jagged edges

Small size

bitmap Used for photos and are stored as individual pixels, each with their own colour.

These photos contain so much complex information that they are not re-sized too much as they will pixelated.

Large files

PSD Photo manipulation software’s

Use PSD when you need to preserve layers, transparency, adjustment layers, masks, clipping paths, layer styles, blending modes, vector text and shapes, etc.

File size differs

BMP Use BMP for any type of bitmap images

BMPs are huge files, but there is no loss in quality. BMP has no real benefits over TIFF, except you can use it for Windows wallpaper.

Large files

RAW An image output option available on some digital cameras.

RAW files are huge, but there is no loss in quality. BMP has no real benefits over TIFF, except you can use it for Windows wallpaper.

Task 3

MinutesThe objectives of this meeting is to establish what the student has done on the given task and to state out any modification that the student needs to carry out after comments from the lecture.

Meeting date – 11:08

Attendees at meeting

Caroline Glorioso (Lecture)

Dave Tencin Amadhila (student)

Comments on mood map

The drawings are heavily detailed; the drawings were suited to the events they represented. The poster was clearly detailed and easy to understand what event it was promoting.

I created three forms of logos, the lecture chose one from the three, the reasons for choosing it was, the logo was simple and was made up off two colours, blue and white. The lecture was satisfied with the logo design.

The leaflet was well designed with the correct format, design and the purpose was clear to understand. The use of the map and logo on the leaflet were used well.

Meeting was adjourned at 11:34

Task 5

Tools used in a photo manipulation software

Move

The move tool allows you to move a selection or entire layer by dragging it with your mouse or using your keyboard arrows keys. In the photo manipulating software such as the Adobe Photoshop, the move tool is located at the top right of the Photoshop Toolbox.

When the move tool is selected, click and drag anywhere in the image. By default, if an area is selected the selection will be moved; otherwise the whole layer will be moved.

Paint / Gradient

The Gradient tool creates a gradual blend between multiple colours. The gradient tool is tucked away discretely behind the Paint Bucket Tool. To access the gradient tool you may either use the mouse or shortcuts on the keyboard.

Text

Whenever you want to add text to a Photoshop document, whether it's a single letter or several lengthy paragraphs, you use Photoshop's Type Tool, which is found along with all of Photoshop's other tools in the Tools palette.

History Brush

The history brush uses a previous state or snapshot of an image. The tool makes a copy of the image as it was in a previous state, then uses the content of this copy to paint with.

1. The image was opened.

2. The levels were adjusted.

3. A glowing edges filter was applied.

Magic wand

The Magic Wand tool allows you to select an area of an image based on its colour. The tool is located near the top of the Photoshop Toolbox. When you click an area in an image with the magic wand, all areas which are a similar colour are selected. You can specify various options to determine the exact selection.

Colour swatches

A swatch is just a little sample of colour. It saves colours are frequently used or can be created by the user, when a user wants to find a colour for a graphics they are doing but they are not sure what colour to choose, using a colour swatch can really help as a selected image will change colour depending on which colour is selected in the colour swatch.

Select (all types)

Rectangular Marquee Tool (M)

The Marquee tool creates geometric, selection shapes like squares, rectangles, and circles. Select either the elliptical marquee tool or the rectangular marquee tool, then click and drag to create rectangles and ellipses. To quickly use this tool use the keyboard shortcut "M" or Shift M.

Move Tool (V)

The move tool moves a selection or an entire layer around on the canvas. This tool can be accessed by clicking on the arrow icon at the top of the tool bar or by pressing the V character on the keyboard.

Polygon Lasso Tool (L)

The lasso tool creates a custom, free-hand selection. It is usually used to cut out, or select specific sections of a pre-existing picture. This tool can be accessed by clicking on the “speech box” on the tool bar or by pressing the L character on the keyboard.

Magic Wand Tool (W)

The Magic Wand tool allows you to select an area of an image based on its colour. The tool is located near the top of the Photoshop Toolbox. When you click an area in an image with the magic wand, all areas which are a similar colour are selected. You can specify various options to determine the exact selection.

Eraser

The eraser is basically a brush which erases pixels as you drag it across the image. Pixels are erased to transparency or the background colour if the layer is locked. It has three variations: Eraser, Background Eraser and Magic Eraser.

Hand

The Hand Tool is for moving your entire image within a window. For example, if you are zoomed in and other parts of your image is larger than the window (or larger than your screen, for that matter), you can use this Hand Tool to look around your image.

Blending modes

The Blend Modes specified in the options bar control how pixels in two separate layers interact with and affect each other. The images below show how an image changes depending on the blending modes being used.

Gradient map

Gradient maps are a great way to add colour to a greyscale image, or to fine tune the existing colour of an image. Below is an image that i used the gradient map tool on to show the difference.

DuotoneA Duotone takes a monochrome greyscale image and allows you to take the tonal range, from lightest tones to darkest, and allocate a different colour to specific part of the tonal range.

“A duotone is an image made up of just two colours. It’s often used in the printing world where a photograph is included in a publication and where the publisher wants to use some colour on the page but not pay for full colour printing. As a duotone, the image is created as a mix of two colours – hence its name duotone”

MaskingMasks in image editing software are a way of protecting specific areas of your image, A mask consists of a greyscale channel, called an alpha channel and is often displayed as a ruby overlay so the underlying image can be seen through the mask. The darkest areas of a mask are the areas most protected and the white areas are unprotected. Shades of gray represent areas of partial protection that corresponds with the level of gray.

FiltersFilters are used to change the appearance of an image, layer or selection in Photoshop. Photoshop’s Filter Gallery is basically a one-stop place for working with filters in your documents. In the Filter Gallery, you can browse through many different types of filters, apply them individually to your image, or even stack them on top of one another like you would with layers.

Transform

In Photoshop, Transform is used to scale, rotate, skew, and just distort the perspective of any graphic you’re working with in general. One of the most basic transformations Photoshop is capable of is scaling a graphic. Scaling allows you to enlarge or shrink a graphic around a reference point.

Colour balance

This is by far the best window for adjusting the colour of photographs. Unlike some of the other windows for adjusting colour, like the 'hue saturation' window, this one is quite clever in its effect and, unlike the 'variations' window; you can preview the effect on the actual picture itself. Colour Balance is one of the most effective tools in the Photoshop arsenal for removing unwanted colour casts caused by incandescent light, florescent light, or odd colour casts from hazy, smoggy, cloudy, or foggy weather conditions.

Eyedropper

The eyedropper tool you can pick up colours from any open image. The keyboard shortcut for the eyedropper is I. Simply click with the eyedropper in your image to change the foreground colour.

Clone Stamp

Photoshop's clone stamp tool allows you to duplicate part of an image. The process involves setting a sampling point in the image which will be used as a reference to create a new cloned area.

Task 6

Why certain tools are best suited to particular tasksSome tools in graphical editing software are best suited to do than others, each tool has it’s own individual purpose. Below are some of the tools that I have not mentioned above, these tools are best suited to the tasks they do in Photoshop.

Dodge Tool

Using the Dodge tool in Photoshop

This is the original picture, when I used the dodge tool I change the foreground colour from black to white and changed the size of the tool to cover almost the picture. I’ve done this fro one sole purpose, that is to be quick and have constant changes made to the picture.

Page 16: Digital Graphics Assignment After

And the below image illustrates the finished image, see as the darkness from the original image is gone and the image is a lot brighter

.

The Burn Tool

The burn tool has darkened the image, it is very different to what the dodge tool has done.

The Sponge Tool

In the image above illustrates what happened when I used the sponge tool, the image is intensified in colour but you can clearly see that the sea floor is clear and the blue colour that was originally there is now gone.

Crop ToolThe Crop Tool cuts out a defined area deleting or hiding the rest of an image.

This is the image before cropping it.

Page 18: Digital Graphics Assignment After

Amadhila Dave Tencin

This is how the image looked like after cropping, the only visible part of the image is the part that the crop tool enclosed; the rest of the image is cut off.

You crop by following steps:

In the Toolbox, select the Crop Tool, click on the image and draw a rectangle holding mouse's button pressed.

When you release the button a bounding box appears. You can move, resize and rotate it.

To apply crop you have either to press [Enter] key or right-click on the image and choose command Crop in context menu
