Port Blair, Sept. 20 The Andaman and Nicobar Administration is committed to takeforward the vision of the Govt. of India in transiting from the existingfossil fuel vehicles to electric vehicles, as a step towardsenvironmental preservation. Forging ahead in this direction, theTransport Department, A&N Administration after inductingelectric cars for Government Departments has now embarked uponprocuring 40 electric air-conditioned buses in A&N Islands. As part of this initiative, the Transport Department, A&N Islandshas signed an agreement with National Thermal Power Corporation(NTPC) Vidyut Vyapar Nigam Ltd (NVVN, a wholly-owned subsidiaryof NTPC) for operation of 40 e-buses. As per the agreement, 40 AirConditioned Electric Buses (zero emission) will be provided to

Transport Department by NTPC. Out of the 40 electric buses to be purchased through NTPC, thefirst lot of 20 buses in the first phase is expected to reach Port Blairduring the month of October, 2020. The design, logo and the bannerof the buses has already been approved and it will be a 35 -seater air-conditioned bus and has the capacity to cover a distance of 200 KMson a single charge. These buses will provide a noiseless, pollutionfree and comfortable public transport to the citizens. The buses arealso are fitted with GPS based vehicle tracking system, securitycameras and panic buttons for the safety of commuters, especiallywomen and children. Departmentof Civil Supplies & Consumer Affairswas well aware of the problems beingfaced by the consumers while bookingLPG cylinders and accordingly, took upthe matter with all stakeholders likeIOCL, LPG Distributers etc. With the establishment of networkconnectivity in South Andaman District,the matter has been pursued and theDepartment requested M/s lOCL tocome up with the facility of onlinebooking of LPG cylinders by theconsumers. IOCL has promptlyresponded to the request and came upwith the facility of online booking forwhich trial runs were taken and foundto be successful. The facility of digital

Port Blair, Sept. 20 With the objective to ensure that girl students are not deniedthe opportunity to continue their studies due to distance to schools,parents financial affordability and other societal problems, theEducation Department is in pursuit of establishing Girls' Hostelat prominent locations of the Islands to encourage girls inaccomplishing their formal schooling at all levels. Accordingly,two such hostels are coming up one each at the premises of Govt.Girls School at Port Blair and another at Rangat in MiddleAndaman. The 100 Bedded Girls Hostel at Govt. Girls Sr. SecondarySchool, Port Blair is being constructed at an estimated cost ofRs.2.87 crore. The Block-I of this Hostel comprising of 40- bedwhich also houses dinning space and kitchen has alreadycompleted. The remaining Blocks totaling 60 beds is in the finalstages of completion. The finishing works are being carried outand expected to be completed by all means by November this year.

The hostel has been constructed as divyang friendlyand having rooms to accommodate divyang studentsin the ground floor with appropriate toilet facilities. Apart from this, another Hostel, a 50 Bedded GirlsHostel is also being constructed at Rangat at anestimated cost of Rs.2.35 crore for the benefit of therural population of the Middle Andaman and is

In the final happiness rankings, Mizoram, Punjab,Andaman and Nicobar Islands are the top three states andUTs while Odisha, Uttarakhand and Chhattisgarh are thebottom three. Among the big states, Punjab, Gujarat andTelangana lead the happiness rankings while among thesmaller states, Mizoram, Sikkim and Arunachal Pradeshare at the top. The research names the Andaman and Nicobar Islands,

Puducherry and the Lakshadweep as the happiest UnionTerritories."Happiness is a subjective concept and the differences inrankings are due to differences in the components ofhappiness across the states and the UTs. However, the Department is alsoplanning to deploy some buses in AndamanTrunk Road (ATR) for the comfort and ease ofthe commuters of North and Middle Andaman.To materialize this plan, the Department hasplans to establish charging station at Rangat, sothat the Air-Conditioned Electric Buses can coverthe distance of around 300 KMs from Port Blairto Diglipur, without any interruption. With the introduction of these electric buses,the general public will get quality publictransport and increase in mobility, therebydecreasing the number of personal vehicles on road besides zero tail pipe emissionleading to lesser pollution and lessening congestion in city roads. The second lotof 20 buses will be operated under 'Smart City Project'. NTPC will provide driversfor these buses and carryout the maintenance work while the conductors for thesebuses will be provided by the Transport Department.The NTPC has agreed to set up a set of fast charging stations so that electricbuses do not face any difficulty after arrival. The Transport Department has beencontinuously working to improve the quality, comfort, reliability and assuredtransport facility to the commuters in all parts of the UT.The introduction of electric buses will go a long way in protecting the diverseecology of the Islands. It may be recalled that the Transport Department has procured 70 electric carsfor the use of 34 Departments/Divisions. All these electric cars have been handedover to the respective Departments/Divisions, after completion of all the formalitiesand are operational now.
