Tychy is definitely a child of modernist city planning. Housing blocks represent the main part of Tychy and it can be seen as a mono-

functional city. Therefore we propose a new urban system of organization and superimpose it with the existing system. A second

argument for getting a more rigid structure to regulate future development is, to prevent an uncontrolled growth as it has been

happening in Warsaw in recent years. Our proposal is a grid that should allow to generate a continuous urban fabric and define

large urban spaces. Our proposal for the grid is not a physical mega-structure but a set of principals of how to built. This act of

superimposing two systems creates like all superimpositions moments of conflict and overlay. In order to examine these moments

more closely we worked out six specific locations in more detail. They act as possible examples of how future programs could be

added following the newly given rules and how the existing housing could interact with them. We formulated six different spatial

operations (of how the volumes can come together) as well as six possible ways of functional interaction. The latter should also

allow us to explore how the old and the new function could position themselves in relation to each other. (e.g. the housing could be

observing the new function or vice versa). Each of the projects embodies one spatial operation and one way of functional interaction

and therefore allows to explore the field of possibilities offered by the implemented new system of organization and it’s way of being

superimposed to the existing structures.
