1. INTRODUCTION

The invention of computer is one of the most important milestones in human history of

twentieth century. About two hundred years before, the word "computer" started to appear in the

dictionary. In the early stages of development, it was just considered as a calculating machine

for doing simple arithmetic operations. According to the changes in human needs, new

technologies and inventions were added to it. After so many years computers become the life line

of todays high! tech world. And information technology becomes a very wide branch of science.

Today computer is used every where in the world in every field of life. The use of

computers has overpowered our life and we have got addicted to computers to a great etent.

There are various causes due to which computers have their own stand in our life. It provides a

very good facility of fast processing, sound and picture. #ne of the important features of todays

computers is concept of virtual reality. The concept of virtual reality is introduced by the

computer programmers to provide more attachments to the user.

$irtual reality can be defined as an efficient technology that ma%es users feel in a Virtual

Environment &$'( by using computer hardware and software. It was originally conceived as adigitally created space which humans could access by using special computer e)uipments. That

user dons special gloves, earphones, and goggles, all of which receive their input from the

The digital smell is basically a hardware software combination. 6ere needs the hardware

for the smell to be transported to our nose. This peripheral can be placed in the vicinity of the

computer. And the software part will evaluate the smell e)uation and generate specific signals for

specific smell and finally that smell will be produced by the device.

The hardware device of digital smell is a device just li%e a spea%er, which can be

connected to the computer system. *or this device there is a driver program which will evaluatethe digital e)uation for generating specific odour.

The online communication commonly involved only three of our senses ! hear, touch, and

The iSmell is a device, a computerperipheral device developed by DigiScents about the

si=e of a -0 spea%er that connects to a -0 via a serial or 1S: port and was designed to emit a

smell when a user visited a web site or opened an email. It uses consumable cartridges which are

used and replaced similar to the way in% jet printers use in% cartridges. It emits natural!basedvapors into the users personal space. ISmell is triggered either on demand by the user &via a

%eyboard or mouse action( or via a timed or programmed response &as is the case with a D$D

game. 0urrently 47? chemicals are stored in a cartridge. Similar to an in% jet printer, those oils

form the core of a replaceable cartridge, which is inserted in the companys iSmell device. The

oils are electrically stimulated in different combinations to create specific smells in response tosoftware prompts programmed into applications such as 8eb site features, computer games,
