We’re introducing a NEW Premier instructor this month, but she’s actually quite well known to you already as the Scrapper’s Guide Forum director and my personal assistant, Jan Walker. You didn’t know our team was so talented, did you?

I know you’ll enjoy Jan’s video on how to take your photo from so-so to spectacular by adding texture.

My two videos this month will give you even more tips for elegant pages. We’ll create a French Memo Board, and I’ll teach you how to make a simply scrumptious, lacy border!

Susie Roberts will wrap up the teaching with a very elegant page design.

Can you tell the word this month is “elegant?” Once in awhile it’s fun to put away the jeans and t-shirt and go out on the town, so enjoy!

June is traditionally the month for graduations and weddings. I just heard of an acquaintance who has a wedding planned for June. My parents and in-laws were both married in June.

What is it about June?

I think there are two factors. It’s the end of a school year, and many couples wait until they graduate to marry, and, secondly, it’s usually a very pretty month for getting married. My roses, in the maroon and cream colors of this kit, are blooming their hearts out, and lush vegetation is everywhere. Perfect for a wedding!

Charlie and I picked March, but, oh well. Sometimes you don’t want to wait for the perfect month!

Look Beyond Weddings

This kit was made with weddings in mind, thus the 31 word art phrases for weddings, but the rest of the kit is perfect for any special occasion. Think elegant and formal, such as a prom. Think special, such as a 25th or 50th wedding anniversary or other gala event.

We used a font with this kit that is free and readily available on the internet. It’s called Beautiful ES and Beautiful Caps ES for those special swirly capital letters, so make your own word art for YOUR special occasion!

Welcome to the June 2010 Digital Scrapper Premier!

This month’s Premier gallery was PACKED with great layouts! My Top Pick from among them is this eye-catching layout by BAlex. Her beautiful pictures of the Maui sunset really shine here, thanks to her choice of orange-toned papers, her use of the overlay grunge in the background. and a generous amount of ‘white’ space to accent the photos.

BAlex’s layout is also a great example of using proximity in page design to create a scrapbook page that is really pleasing to the eye. Notice that even the title and journaling are grouped with the photos and frames.

Premier Kit

This month, we’re interviewing Jan Walker, our Forum Director and Linda’s personal assistant, Tip of the Week contributor…. and now Premier tutorial instructor!

SG: So Jan, what do you do in your spare time?

JW: (laughs)

SG: No, seriously….

JW: Oh, well, I enjoy photography, and playing around with various digital art projects…

SG: You’ve got a video tutorial in this month’s Premier… did it grow out of those interests?

JW: Yes, it’s on making and using textures to enhance the look of photos.

SG: How did you become interested in textures?

JW: I’ve always been sort of a sensory-oriented person. I like the look and feel of various textures… in fabric, in paper, on surfaces… I like the varying “textures” in different types of music… love the play of light and shadow. I guess I’m sort of a “detail” person, so I notice subtleties in things, and when I see them, I want to reproduce them digitally.

SG: In your video, you said that textures are kind of an obsession for you…

JW: (laughs) Well… maybe not an obsession, but certainly an exciting pursuit!

SG: So do you really take photos of rusty things?

JW: Oh yes… rust is very appealing. Stains, peeling paint, cracked walls… almost anything that’s aged, weathered or otherwise distressed.

SG: Isn’t that just a little…. weird?

JW: Maybe… but I’m in good company. One of the first times I got together with Linda (Sattgast), she talked about how she photographed things like asphalt and rust, and an oily spot on her driveway. I knew then that I was not alone. Turns

out there are millions of us out there… textureholics. Almost everyone at Scrapper’s Guide is one.

SG: Have you always been a creative person?

JW: Yes… my Dad was an artist, so I guess you could say it’s in my genes. I grew up drawing and doing craft projects, and always enjoyed the arts… music, theater, literature.

SG: So your father influenced your creative sensibility?

JW: In a sense. He was a painter, but no matter how hard I tried, I simply could not master the brush.

Getting to know.... Jan Walker

In fact, it just felt weird in my hand. I didn’t have the ability to do what he did. So for a long time, I just dabbled in a variety of different art forms until I came across something that felt right for me.

SG: Photography?

JW: Yes. I discovered that I could put together a scene in the viewfinder, and let the camera do the “painting” for me. I learned that the essence of what I enjoyed was not so much the ability to translate ideas to paper or canvas, but the actual process of composing the image. When I realized that, it was very freeing for me. And as a result, I’m not a so much of a technical photographer… I tend to be more organic and intuitive with it.

SG: What do you shoot… besides rust?

JW: Mostly nature… landscapes, the whole flora and fauna thing… my Dad painted landscapes, so it feels comfortable for me. I like photographing people… kids, older people… my family and friends – when they’ll let me. I like shooting studio portraits, too.

SG: And then you take those photos and do artistic things with them with Photoshop?

JW: Yes… to me that’s just as much fun as actually going on a photo shoot. I can sit for hours and labor over one photo, trying a technique, changing it, looking at it from dozens of angles, changing things again… it’s painting, but with pixels.

SG: What would your Dad make of this art form?

JW: I think about that a lot… he died before computers really became common household items… before digital photography. I think about how he would have marveled at the technology, and I wonder what it might have been like to sit with him in front of the computer and just create things together. We could have shared so much. I think he would have liked it.

SG: So what’s next for you at Scrapper’s Guide?

JW: Well, we’re adding a Photography section to the Forum, along with a Gallery where people can post their pictures, share ideas, ask for help, get feedback and hopefully gain inspiration. It’s going to be a lot of fun!

SG: Will there be a support group there for textureholics?

JW: I’m thinking yes… (smile)

SG: And what’s next for you creatively?

JW: I just want to keep learning and growing, and sharing anything I can that will help others learn and grow too. God has blessed me with the ability to make a living doing what I love, and He has provided for me in so many ways. I’m so grateful for that! And I’m surrounded by a wonderful group of people here at Scrapper’s Guide, so I’ve learned from the best. My thanks also to Linda and the team!

Take objects, shapes, and flourishes from kits and turn them into an elegant lace border. You’ll make the lace mesh using a little-known filter that quickly and easily creates a perfect mesh. Combine all the pieces, and you’ll have a stunning lace border!

Bonus Mini Kit

Extra TidbitsWedding Reception Place Cards by Susie Roberts.

• Open the PSD template 59_OurWedding_PlaceCard.psd and the paper you would like to use for the back of the card (File > Open).

• With your paper active, press Ctrl Alt I (Mac: Cmd Opt I) to get the Image Size dialog box. Change the Width and Height to 4 inches. Click OK.

• Drag the paper onto your card template above the 2nd layer (back of place card), while pressing the Shift key so it lands in the middle.

• Press Ctrl T (Mac: Cmd T) to get a transform outline. Press Ctrl 0 (Mac: Cmd 0) to see the outside of the bounding box. Click and drag inward from a corner handle while pressing Alt (Mac: Opt) in Elements or Alt Shift (Mac: Opt Shift) in Photoshop. Double click inside the outline to accept the change. Press Ctrl 0 (Mac: Cmd 0) to return your file to its normal size.

• Close the original paper without saving the changes.

• Position the cursor between the paper layer and the back of place card layer, press Alt (Mac: Opt) and click to group the two layers together.

• Repeat the above action for the front of the card.

• Add any other accents to decorate the card.

• Change the color of the word art and the flourishes to suit your papers. Alt Shift Backspace (Mac: Opt Shift Delete) fills the pixels on the currently selected layer with the Foreground color.

• Add the guest’s name, Bride and Groom’s names and date of the wedding.

• Save the file as a JPEG.

• Change the name for each guest and re-save each place card as a JPEG.

• Create a New File 8.5 inches wide x 11 inches high at 300 dpi.

• Open six of your JPEG place cards and drag them onto the page using the grid to align them. Leave a 1 pixel gap between them vertically, by using your arrow keys to nudge one space over.

• Print the pages on photo quality cardstock, and use a paper cutter to cut them out. Fold each one in half.

• Repeat for the remaining cards.
