3NEW INSTAGRAM CAPABILITIES IN FACEBOOK CREATOR STUDIO

Admit it…

Getting a new marketing tool is like getting a new toy. All you want to do is geek out and play with it for hours.

Don’t be embarrassed, I do it all the time.

In fact, I had a major geek out last week over Facebook’s Creator Studio. I’ve been diving into it and wanted to share the latest updates with you in just one word…

Instagram!

Just kidding, I have a LOT more to say. I’ll be diving into the great, the good, the bad, and exactly how you can use it.

Before I dive into all of the recent, exciting changes (seriously, INSTAGRAM y’all!), I want to give you a quick overview of Creator Studio, how you can use it, and some of the powerful analytics tools it’s housing.

Facebook Creator Studio Overview

Facebook’s Creator Studio was launched last fall as a way for creators to more easily manage their content.

You can easily access it at the top of your Facebook page with the rest of your main tabs.

4NEW INSTAGRAM CAPABILITIES IN FACEBOOK CREATOR STUDIO

When you got to “Creator Studio” you’ll see a page that has your recent posts with views for videos and engagement numbers. You’ll also see very basic insights for the past 7 days. Keep in mind that it will automatically default to Facebook.

You can see above that you get a quick overview of performance. But the real magic happens when you play around with the tabs on the side of your Creator Studio Home Page.

5NEW INSTAGRAM CAPABILITIES IN FACEBOOK CREATOR STUDIO

When you hit “Content Library,” you’ll see all your posts: both published and scheduled. You can then filter by post type, like “Video” and specific dates. You can get even more granular by filtering by description—for example, you want to find all the videos you’ve posted about “LinkedIn, just type in “LinkedIn” and voilà!

6NEW INSTAGRAM CAPABILITIES IN FACEBOOK CREATOR STUDIO

One filter I love is “Length”! You can choose under 1 minute, 1–2:59, and 3 minutes plus.

You may have noticed that Facebook recently is focusing on videos that are 3+ minutes long. They want to keep people on their platform! So, you can filter by that to check the performance of those videos or repost those videos.

You can quickly check performance (views and engagements), and can filter by post types—link, photo, text, and lives.

7NEW INSTAGRAM CAPABILITIES IN FACEBOOK CREATOR STUDIO

You also have the ability to create a post or upload a video.

You can also edit a post after it has been scheduled (this is for Facebook only). Just hit “Scheduled,” check the post you want to edit, and hit “Edit post.”

You can also repost videos, by hitting the “Create post with video” button. However, this is for videos only. You cannot create a new post from previously published links, photos, etc. I’ve utilized this feature A LOT. I just created a new post with some of our top-performing videos, and I see some great returns with this strategy.

Taking Facebook’s Creator Studio to the Next Level

Admittedly, this is where I was stuck for several months.

8NEW INSTAGRAM CAPABILITIES IN FACEBOOK CREATOR STUDIO

I just used the Creator Studio to schedule content for Facebook and check basic performance. But, there’s more to unpack.

Let’s head to the “Insights” tab on the left-hand side.

Now, one major note, the Creator Studio “Insights” tab focuses on videos. Facebook built this for content creators, and when they say content, they mean video. So if you don’t create a lot of videos, this probably won’t be super valuable to you...

BUT, if you are focusing on video creation, this is a goldmine!

First, you’ll see an “Opportunities” section at the top.

This will show you how you can get more from your video distribution AND which video has had the highest amount of engagement during the last 7 days. So you can see very quickly what’s worked in the past week.

Below that is a section, with your most top-level video

9NEW INSTAGRAM CAPABILITIES IN FACEBOOK CREATOR STUDIO

stats—as well as changes from the previous week—including minutes Viewed, 1-minute video views, 3-second video views, and engagement.

Scroll down and you are at the “Top Videos” Section. You can filter by the category that matters most to you! For instance, if you want to see the videos that got the most engagement (think comments or shares) then just click “Engagement.” Also, I love that you can see the minutes viewed and 1-minute video views right here. Don’t just focus on 3-second views.

10NEW INSTAGRAM CAPABILITIES IN FACEBOOK CREATOR STUDIO

There’re even more tabs to explore, including “Loyalty.” This gives you stats on your follower activity, including returning viewers: a look at how many of your 1-minute viewers become returning viewers.

This includes a quick summary. For instance, I discovered that 33% of our viewers returned from the previous week. This is the highest percentage of returning viewers we’ve had in 5 weeks.

There’s also a graph that details how long your audience watched your videos for that time period. You’ll also get a quick summary of what this means.

11NEW INSTAGRAM CAPABILITIES IN FACEBOOK CREATOR STUDIO

As you can see, Facebook is really, and I mean REALLY focusing on videos. They want you to be posting videos, and in particular, longer-form videos. It looks like they’ll continue to build analytics around this!

Okay, now let’s get into what I’m so excited about–INSTAGRAM. There are some awesome updates, but limitations too. And I’ll dive into both.

Using Facebook Creator Studio for Instagram

First, you can now schedule your Feed posts and IGTV videos directly in Facebook’s Creator Studio. YES!

Here’s how…

From Creator Studio, hit the “Instagram Icon” next to the “Facebook Icon” to switch your view.

Be sure you have your Instagram account already connected and that it is either a Business or Creator account. You can also add multiple accounts. Just head to the bottom tab and click “Instagram Accounts.”

12NEW INSTAGRAM CAPABILITIES IN FACEBOOK CREATOR STUDIO

Then, the upper left hand button, “Add Instagram Account.” Then, enter your login information, and you’re set.

Hit “Content Library” in the Instagram view, and you’ll see something like this. It will be set to “All accounts,” so if you want to just see posts for 1 account, you just need to uncheck the other accounts and hit “Apply,”

13NEW INSTAGRAM CAPABILITIES IN FACEBOOK CREATOR STUDIO

You’ll then see a layout like this. This includes all your posts—both published and scheduled.

You can filter by post type, including Stories and IGTV! You can also filter by date and post type (Video, Photo, Carousel, Stories, and IGTV).

14NEW INSTAGRAM CAPABILITIES IN FACEBOOK CREATOR STUDIO

For DM, videos have been a big push recently. So, I wanted to see the performance for the month of July.

First I hit the “Video” button to filter. Then, I hit “Published” as the Post Status, and then of course the “Calendar” button to filter for last month. You can look at this quarter!

Here’s where the fun begins.

Now, you can’t currently filter by Likes and Comments. It’s just automatically set at the date published, starting with the newest post. So this is definitely a limitation. But, you can scroll through your posts and get a look at the amount of likes and comments on each video post (or any post) you published.

15NEW INSTAGRAM CAPABILITIES IN FACEBOOK CREATOR STUDIO

Remember, we have it set at Videos, but you can easily change this to “Photo” or even “Carousel.” Also, you can look at your Stories or IGTV! I’m definitely most excited about “Stories” and being able to go back in time to look at performance.

Diving Deeper into Post Data

Remember when I said this is where the “fun begins”? I meant it! But, I may just be a crazy stat nut.

Okay, you’ve gotten a look at how your video posts generally performed for July, BUT you want to know what actual, tangible results each post generated. Click on a post and MAGIC!

16NEW INSTAGRAM CAPABILITIES IN FACEBOOK CREATOR STUDIO

Are you as excited as I am?

You can easily see video views, BUT you can also dive into the actions taken from a particular post, including profile visits and website visits. You can see the accounts you reached with your post and the percentage of those accounts that weren’t following you.

Why does this matter? If you have a high percentage of accounts that you reached that weren’t following you, this could indicate that your hashtag game for this particular post was strong (and you can use that to improve your future posts).

17NEW INSTAGRAM CAPABILITIES IN FACEBOOK CREATOR STUDIO

Neat, right? You can even see the number of follows you got from this one post!

This is incredible data and you get it all for FREE.

I haven’t been happy with the tools to track individual post performance, so this is definitely something I will be using on a daily basis.

One of our main goals for our Instagram account is to generate traffic to our website. Now, we have the ability to more easily track this and see quickly which posts are generating that traffic.

Tracking Your Instagram Stories

Stories!

I have to touch on the power of having this tracking in one place. You can go back through ALL the Stories you’ve EVER posted.

Just for a test, I went back to November 2018. It shows you Stories posted from the end of the month to the beginning. (NOTE: You’ll get the reach for each Story, but you can’t yet filter by reach.) But the real magic begins when you click on a story.

18NEW INSTAGRAM CAPABILITIES IN FACEBOOK CREATOR STUDIO

You can see the actions taken from that particular Story, including link clicks. This is a key stat for us.

Insights for Instagram

There’s also an Instagram “Insights” tab. But it’s not detailed. It all gives you broad stats from the last 7 days.

You can use it to quickly see the number of Profile Visits and Website Visits you got from Instagram in the past 7 days. You can also see how your performance compares to the previous 7 days. The “Get Direction” button is a great one to track if you own a local business.

I’m hoping that with Facebook’s continued focus on Instagram, the “Insights” tab will improve.

19NEW INSTAGRAM CAPABILITIES IN FACEBOOK CREATOR STUDIO

When I was first exploring Creator Studio, I was just quietly nerding out to myself at my desk. But when I got to this next part, I turned to our Director of Marketing, Amanda Powell, and said, “Wow, we might not need (insert your 3rd party scheduling/analytics tool) anymore!

You can now create and schedule feed posts and IGTV videos directly in Creator Studio. I LOVE this, but there are a few limitations that I hope get worked out.

Creating and Scheduling Instagram Posts in Creator Studio

Here’s how you create and schedule a post for Instagram.

20NEW INSTAGRAM CAPABILITIES IN FACEBOOK CREATOR STUDIO

Just hit “Create Post”

You’ll see a dropdown to choose either Instagram Feed or IGTV. I click on “Instagram Feed” and then choose my account.

21NEW INSTAGRAM CAPABILITIES IN FACEBOOK CREATOR STUDIO

I choose “DigitalMarketer.” If you have multiple accounts, be sure you choose the correct one for that post.

Now, you’re ready to write your caption, add content, and schedule. Notice that you can also add a location. This is great for local businesses and conference marketing. When uploading your content, you’ll see this.

Notice you can choose a file from your Facebook page.

22NEW INSTAGRAM CAPABILITIES IN FACEBOOK CREATOR STUDIO

For instance, let’s say I wanted to post a Facebook video on Instagram. I just check that video and hit “Continue with Selected Posts.”

23NEW INSTAGRAM CAPABILITIES IN FACEBOOK CREATOR STUDIO

Now, you’ll write your caption. BUT, notice that you can change the Cover Image! You can choose an image or upload your own.

I don’t know if you’ve had the same experience as I have. But, when scheduling a video within a 3rd party platform, you can’t choose the cover image. So, sometimes your video isn’t visually appealing or engaging. We really

24NEW INSTAGRAM CAPABILITIES IN FACEBOOK CREATOR STUDIO

focus on the overall look of our account, so I have had to natively publish video on Instagram. Just so I could choose the cover image. What a time suck! This solves that very specific problem.

Of course, for the most part, you’ll probably be using the “File Upload” instead of the “From Facebook Page.” But, it’s definitely good to have that option.

You can also create and schedule carousel posts. Let’s see this in action.

Let’s say I want to create a carousel posts full of #MondayMotivation quotes.

25NEW INSTAGRAM CAPABILITIES IN FACEBOOK CREATOR STUDIO

Okay, I’ve added my first quote. Now, let’s add another one. Just click the “Add Content” button above the caption field.

You can choose “File Upload” or “From Facebook”. Then, start adding.

26NEW INSTAGRAM CAPABILITIES IN FACEBOOK CREATOR STUDIO

Then, I add my caption. Now, you can add 30 hashtags here, but we like clean captions. So, we limit our hashtags and add them in a comment. Also, this does not have an emoji button. I love adding emojis to our Instagram captions. So, I will just pull and add emojis from Emojipedia. No biggie.

27NEW INSTAGRAM CAPABILITIES IN FACEBOOK CREATOR STUDIO

Now I’m ready to schedule! Just head to the lower right hand corner, and hit the arrow button. You can Publish Now or Schedule.

28NEW INSTAGRAM CAPABILITIES IN FACEBOOK CREATOR STUDIO

I chose Monday (it’s a Monday Motivation post, after all) and changed the time to the morning. Then, hit “Schedule.”

There it is under “Scheduled” posts. You’ll see that it indicates that it’s a “Carousel” post.

You can also add videos and images to the same carousel post, which I haven’t had the ability to do in the 3rd party scheduling tool we use. So, I really love this option! For instance, I tested it out with a video and 2 images, and it worked.

29NEW INSTAGRAM CAPABILITIES IN FACEBOOK CREATOR STUDIO

You can also upload your IGTV videos. We’ve just started testing IGTV and have had great results so far. So this is definitely something I’ll utilize moving forward.

Just follow the same steps, except choose “IGTV” when you hit “Create Post.” And, this is what you’ll see.

30NEW INSTAGRAM CAPABILITIES IN FACEBOOK CREATOR STUDIO

You can even choose to upload a Custom Image, so your face isn’t cut off when you post the IGTV preview to your feed. You can also check the box to have your Instagram post published to Facebook. This could be good if you have a theme day across social.

Maybe you post a motivational quote on Instagram and Facebook every Monday. You can knock this out with this one step.

However, you cannot schedule the post on Facebook; it’s only a “Publish Now” feature. So, that is a drawback.

31NEW INSTAGRAM CAPABILITIES IN FACEBOOK CREATOR STUDIO

A Few Limitations to Keep in Mind

Okay, now to the limitations. Once you’ve scheduled your Instagram post, you can’t edit it. Bummer. You can only “View Post,” “Publish Now,” or “Delete.” Remember, the Monday Motivation post? I tried to see if I could edit it, but it’s a no go.

You also can’t repost a previously published post either. You can currently only repost videos on Facebook. However, you do have the option to upload your Instagram videos to Facebook. Check the video you want to upload, and then hit the “Upload to Facebook” button.

32NEW INSTAGRAM CAPABILITIES IN FACEBOOK CREATOR STUDIO

You can edit and add a title, and then save as a draft.

Not being able to edit scheduled Instagram posts is a bummer. If you like to post each day instead of scheduling posts out, this can work for you. However, if you like getting all your content scheduled for a month, this could prove challenging. I know that I often edit scheduled Instagram posts!

Also, Creator Studio does not have a calendar view, unlike many scheduling tools. You can sort by date and post status and see all relevant posts listed vertically starting with most recent. But, if you prefer to see your posts in a calendar format, this is something you should be aware of.

Despite these limitations, I’m pretty pumped for Creator Studio and the recent changes! I will definitely be using it for both Facebook and Instagram moving forward. I’m also excited to see future updates.

33NEW INSTAGRAM CAPABILITIES IN FACEBOOK CREATOR STUDIO

I really think this is an excellent choice for a person or brand who creates a ton of videos. Plus, the ability to schedule carousel posts with both videos and images, and being able to change the video cover image is .

I think sometimes we can get stuck in the same old routine. Checking the same statistics, using the same old tools. I know I was.

Sometimes just diving into something can really open your eyes.

And really diving into Creator Studio did that for me. I believe that as Facebook continues to focus on video on their platform and Instagram for their overall growth, the insights will become even more powerful and actionable for creators: video creators especially. Here’s hoping.
