The Dignity of the Human Person
United States Conference of Catholic
Bishops The Catholic Church proclaims that human
life is sacred and that the dignity of the human person is the foundation of a moral vision for society.
In our society, human life is under direct attack from abortion and euthanasia. The value of human life is being threatened by cloning, embryonic stem cell research, and the use of the death penalty.
We believe that every person is precious, that people are more important than things.
Catechism of the Catholic Church
The dignity of the human person is rooted in His creation in the image and likeness of God.(1700)
It is fulfilled in his vocation to divine beatitude (1700)
It is essential to a human being freely to direct himself (or herself) to this fulfillment.(1700)
Man is obliged to follow the moral law, which urges him (or her) ‘to do what is good and avoid what is evil’ (cf GS 16) This law makes itself heard in His conscience.
