Compare and ContrastWhen writers compare and contrast things, they tell how things are alike or different. Words such as same, also, before, although, and however are clues that things are being compared or contrasted.

ActivityYours and Mine With a family member, find two pairs of shoes from different people in your house and put them side by side. Compare and contrast the size, color, style, and how much wear they show. Try comparing and contrasting other household items by using a Venn Diagram.

Lesson Vocabulary

Regular and Irregular Plural Nouns Regular plural nouns name more than one and are formed by adding -s or -es. Irregular plural nouns are formed in unusual ways such as changing a final f or fe to v before adding -es. For example, the plural of leaf is leaves. Other nouns are made into plurals by changing their spellings. An example of this is man and men. The plural form of brother-in-law is brothers-in-law. Study and remember irregular plural forms of nouns.

Compare and Contrast

• Whenyoucompare and contrast two or more things, you show how they are alike and different.

• Cluewords, suchaslike or asshowcomparisons.Wordssuchasbut or however show contrast.

• Sometimes,writersdonotusecluewordswhentheycompareandcontrastthings.

Directions Read the following passage. Then answer the questions below.

Plagiarism, taking another writer’s work and presenting it as one’s own, is

becoming a big problem in schools. Even though students have a very good chance at getting caught, they still plagiarize. In elementary and secondary schools, students are typically punished by a failing grade, being kicked off teams, or being suspended from school. At the college level, however, the penalties can become more serious. Students are often expelled from the college after only one instance of plagiarism. Teachers and professors usually know, or have a strong suspicion, that a student is plagiarizing.

The student who does his or her own work typically shows improvement slowly over time. A student who copies someone else’s work may turn in one assignment that is of poor quality, and then the next week hand in writing that could win prizes. Internet sites that sell or give away finished writing assignments tempt many students who cheat. Like these students, teachers have started using the Internet. Web sites are now available where teachers can upload a student’s paper and find out if it has been written by anyone else anywhere in the world.

1. How is plagiarism usually dealt with in elementary and secondary schools?

2. How is plagiarism usually dealt with at the college level?

3. What is the difference between the work of students who do and don’t plagiarize?

4. How has the Internet made it possible for students to cheat?

5. How has the Internet made it possible for teachers to catch plagiarism?

Home Activity Your child answered compare and contrast questions about plagiarism. Have your child think about other ways that students are tempted to cheat. Have your child list possible consequences for these offenses.

Author’s PurposeDirections Read the following passage. Then answer the questions below.

The sun was high in the sky as it shone down on the men in the pirate ship.

Diego tried to untie his wrists before Captain Flemming turned around. “You’re a terrible pirate!” Diego shouted at Flemming. “What’s that, lad?” Flemming asked. “A pirate? And how exactly would you describe yourself?” Flemming had a good point. Diego was a pirate too. But Diego considered himself an honest one.

“You’d better hope I don’t escape this island, Flemming!” Diego warned bitterly. Flemming smiled a wicked grin. “Well, if you ever do, don’t forget to bring me my treasure. You buried it! Har, har, har!” Diego had his own reason to be happy. He’d recently spied a small boat hidden in the weeds just beyond the beach. Flemming hadn’t noticed the boat. It was just a matter of time before Diego would be free.

1. What is the purpose the author has for writing this passage?

2. How can you tell what the author’s purpose is?

3. What type of passage is this?

4. Who is Diego?

5. Does the author succeed at his or her purpose?

Home Activity Your child answered questions about the author’s purpose for writing a short passage. Read a newspaper article with your child and discuss what the author’s purpose might be.
