GEOLOGICAL OBSERVATIONS

The purpose of this investigation was to examine the quality and extent of the monzonlte-syenite rock in the vicinity of the CBC microwave tower for its suitability as a dimension-stone.

Results of Polished Hand Samples

Initially fresh hand samples were collected during staking of claim SI 179522 and delivered to Khouri Granite for cutting and polishing. These samples revealed a rich reddish brown mahogany colour mottled with black exhibiting a brilliant polish. It is massive, equigranular, medium grained, with a slight schiller and occurs as relatively sound outcrops hi the vicinity of the tower site. As a result further prospecting was conducted hi this area in the falL

Results of Prospecting - Fall of 1993

On October 18 A 19 a series of prospecting traverses were conducted in the study area as shown on map 3. Although outcrop was very limited in the area several observations were made.

From initial prospecting it appears that the sound monzonite rock does not conform to the shape shown on existing geologic maps. Numerous large monzonite boulders suggests an extension of this rock along a southwest trending ridge beyond the staked area. From limited outcrop exposure it appears that a more abrupt termination exists toward the north.

Results of Prospecting - Fall of 1993

On October 18 A19 a series of prospecting traverses were conducted hi the study area as shown on map 3. Although outcrop was very limited hi the area several observations were made.

Assessment Submission R. Komarprhka July S, 19955

Very large sound boulders (up to the size of a volkswagon beetle) exist scattered over claims 1179522 and 1179521 more or less along the axis of a ridge. Apparent outcrops (recent mapping suggests that these may have been very large boulders) encountered on this ridge have been reddish brown monzonite while outcrops found beyond the sides of this ridge are of quartz feldspar biotite gneiss.

In the vicinity of the contact with the monzonite the quartz biotite gneiss develops an augen texture. A red hybrid amphibole quartzite appears to be the result of the monzonite coming in contact with a quartzite.

From the limited observations of outcrop, the area to the north of PCS appears to be primarily composed of augen quartz feldspar biotite gneiss.

Unecutting and Surveying

In an attempt to determine the extent of the monzonite in the study and to define the boundary of the tower, noted as PCS, whose mineral rights were not part of the claimed area, an attempt was made to find the iron bars as indicated hi the survey plan prior to undertaking any linecutthig. A surveying company from North Bay assisted hi this endeavor and located two phis. The third southmost phi was located later during mapping.

Two separate baselines were cut chained and picketed at 25 meter intervals. The northern baseline originating at the surveyed Iron bar being 400 meters long at a bearing of 90", and the other 1,175 meters long at a bearing of 35". Each of these baselines were cut outside PCS

A site visit was undertaken on December 2,1993 to inspect this work, to determine the route of an access trail and to also conduct some prospecting along the traverse route as shown on map 3.

Results of Prospecting -1994

On May 8,1994 a quick reconaisance traverse along the southern baseline failed to reveal any outcrops but did establish a trend of boulders that extended along the axis of the ridge and possibly beyond the staked area. A prospecting traverse was conducted beyond the baseline along a bearing of 2050. Again the monzonite boulder trend continued but less abundantly and with smaller boulders especially beyond 300 meters. No outcrop was observed.

Assessment Submission R. Komarechka July 5,199S6

Claim SI 197393 was then staked over this extended boulder trend. While staking was occurring any bedrock or monzonite boulders were noted. The results of these limited observations are shown on map .

Blazing, Ch3*"*"g and Geological Mapping

Geological mapping was performed in October 1994. While mapping was being undertaken around the perimeter of the claim block, lines 100 meters apart were being blazed off the baseline and stations chained at 25 meter intervals in an east-west direction to the perimeter of the claim group. A total of 6.3 kilometers of line was blazed and chained.

Geological mapping of this area failed to identify any bedrock along the assumed ridge of monzonite. The nearest bedrock exposure of monzonite occurs about 25 meters within CBC's tower land holdings. Previously identified outcrops of monzonite along this ridge may or may not be parts of large buried boulders. Bedrock identified as quartz biotite paragneiss has been found around the perimeter of this ridge. A very large number of huge car sized and larger boulders of massive sound monzonite are found along the trend of the ridge. It also happens that the trend of this ridge at 2050 corresponds to the directions of glacial striae on bedrock near the tower site, hence there is a possibility that this ridge is merely a boulder train from the tower area.

Rock Types

The following rocks have been observed in this area and are shown as separate units on map 4. Due to the paucity of outcrop, the location of large (greater than 6') boulders of monzonite were shown map 4 as welL

enite?)

This rock is a mahogany brown to olive brown colour with numerous black clots. It is a uniform, massive, medium-coarse grained rock which is more resistant to weathering than the surrounding rocks hosting it Compositional the rock is composed predominately (70-8096) of brown (due to included iron oxide) feldspar 0.5-2 cm. often exhibiting a silvery schiller, with (20-1096) black irregular interstitial amphibole dots and up to 1096 of quartz. The quartz content becoming more abundant near the contact of the monzonite. On the first inch thickness of surface exposures the iron contained within the feldspars is often leached out giving the rock a pale pink colour, however the rough surface texture is quite distinctive.

Assessment Submission R. Komarecbka July 5,19957

Quartz Feldspar Rtotite

This rock the most common rock type in the surrounding area. It is a laminar gneiss comprised of quartz and minor feldspar grains with l- 4 cm thick bands of biotite. The rock weathers recesstvely into a crumbly loose light brown sand. No fresh samples of this rock were observed. In the study area it generally has a flat lying attitude.

Feldspar Augeifl Gneiss

This rock appears to be an alteration of the quartz feldspar biotite paragneiss and even weathers in a similar recessive manner. Compositional it appears similar to the paragneiss except for the presence of 0.5 cm - 3 cm subhedral feldspar porphyroblasts. These porphyroblasts are often slightly discoidal to prolate in shape aligned parallel to the biotite layers. Frequently the abundance and size of the porphyroblasts increase as the contact of the monzonite is approached.

Gabbm

A gabbroic rock was noted near the eastern contact of the monzonite with the host paragneiss along the tower access road. This outcrop shows the gabbro being brecciated adjacent to the monzonite contact

Several boulders of this distinctive rock have also been noted on map 3 along the assumed eastern contact of the monzonite.

Vein Qjiartz

Several irregular, relatively pure, white quartz boulders of vein quartz have been found along the eastern contact of the monzonite. One outcrop of this quartz was observed to have an irregular form and may represent a remelted 'sweat1 possibly from remelted quartzite.

Hybrid Rock

This rock is a striking orange coloured, sometimes blotchy, massive fine - medium grained, equigranular, resistant, quartz rich rock with occasional dark mafic blotches. It appears along some contacts of the monzonite and could represent a metasomatized quartzite. The orange colour possibly being due to hematite.

Assessment Submission R. Komarechka July 5,19958

Sample Removal ft Tile Production

Due to the abundant large sound boulders of monzonite encountered, the possibility of producing tiles from these boulders was examined. To confirm the capacity of the many boulders to produce marketable tiles, several boulders along the road were dug out by hand shoveling, lifted and hauled by crane truck to Khouri Granite. This consisted of digging out several boulders and then procuring a crane truck for delivery to a stone processing plant hi Sudbury.

The first crane truck hi this area damaged its outriggers hi backing up and decided to leave the site unloaded and refused to come back. After brushing out the area another crane truck was obtained who loaded up several boulders for delivery to Sudbury.

The boulders delivered to Khouri Granite proved to be very sound and were larger than then* saw could cut so they were split hallway through. About 17 tiles were produced, including a tombstone marker as well as one large l'-6" by 4' slab which was taken by a man named Mark from Rock of Ages.

The boulder produced tiles with a slight crazing of the individual crystals compared to the bedrock derived samples taken the previous year. The material was the same as previously described, that being a brown mahogany colour mottled with black. Texturary it is a massive equigranular medium grained rock exhibiting a slight schiller. A sample of this tile is on file with the Ministry of Northern Development and Mines.

Gradient Magnetometer Survey

In an attempt to determine the extent of this monzonite, hi spite of the lack of outcrop hi this area, a gradient magnetometer survey was conducted to try to define the contact monzonite from the surrounding gneiss.

This survey was conducted hi December Norwin Geological with Dan Pattle and his assistant Scott Whalen as field operators. This work was performed with an OMNI-PLUS combined magnetometer/VLF system designed and manufactured by EDA Instruments Inc. of Toronto Ontario (Scintrex has since taken over the OMNI-PLUS). The instrument was configured to operate solely as a gradient magnetometer. Although total field measurements were taken, no base station was used. The data was recorded hi units of gammas/vertical meter.

Assessment Submission R. Komarechka July 5,19959

Readings were taken along the 2050 baseline and adjacent blazed lines at 25 meter intervals with two operators using identical separate instruments. Duplicate readings were established on the first station by both machines prior to undertaking the survey. A total of 298 readings were taken over a total line distance of 7.45 kilometers. No other sources of geophysical information was used in the preparation of this report

From the results of this data (see map 4) it is difficult to say with any certainty where the actual contact with the monzonite lies. There does appear to be somewhat of a change hi the variability of the readings along line 4+00 west which is hi an area of likely monzonite (outcrop is evident 50 meters to the north). Also, lines 0+00 to 4+00 are in an area of relative stable readings which is outside the monzonite. Consequently we might assume that, given the variability of readings along the baseline and ridge of the anticipated trend, this may represent underlying monzonite

The variability of readings over the monzonite may be caused by varying iron content due to variable convectfve cells, multiple intrusions within the igneous body, variable residual remnant magnetism, variable overburden thickness or a combination of the above.

A VLF survey may be of some help hi confirming the lithology of this area since a massive igneous body would channel an electric field differently from a horizontally banded gneissic host rock, but, stripping, or diamond drilling would confirm the actual presence of monzonite in this area, although due to the large boulders, stripping may be preferable.

CONCLUSION

Despite the above, work no evidence was found to confirm the existence of monzonite bedrock over the study area. It is suggested to take a small portable diamond drill and attempt to core the underling bedrock being aware of the possibility of encountering a large boulder. If monzonite bedrock is encountered under shallow overburden then perhaps a VLF survey may delineate the contact

Regardless of the bedrock, significant numbers of large boulders exist at this site which can produce sound attractive tiles. It is anticipated that further evaluation next year will clarify the extent of the monzonite. This could involve stripping several local spots along the southwest ridge. If the material appears sound, consideration should be given for a stripping program and further development
