Ballard Community School District’s online registration, to verify
and update student(s) information and permissions,
is now open through Infinite Campus. We ask that all returning
student registrations be completed by Friday, June
30, 2017.
While a majority of the registration forms are now replaced with
our new Online Registration system, we ask that you
do check the Returning Student Registration page on the Ballard
Website or see below and complete any additional
forms that pertain to your student(s) for the 2017-2018 school
year.
You must be logged into your Infinite Campus parent account; you
will not be able to access the Online Registration
from your student’s account. If you do not have an Infinite Campus
account or need assistance with your username,
please contact Amber Jungst at
[email protected]. If you
have forgotten your password, please use the for-
got password link on the Infinite Campus Parent Portal Login screen
and follow the prompts to reset your password.
To begin the registration process, please log into your Infinite
Campus Parent account. In the lower left had corner
find the ‘Online Registration’ link. Once you click the link, you
will be asked to register a student(s) who is currently
enrolled in the district OR register a student(s) who has never
been enrolled in the district. You will want to choose
the existing student registration button. Please view the Online
Registration Guide to help you through the process.
After you have reviewed your student(s) information and answered
all the permissions be sure to click submit. This
will complete the Online Registration for your student(s) for the
2017-2018 school year. A follow up email will be sent
once your registration has been processed and approved.
Student fees for the 2017-2018 school year can begin being paid
online via RevTrak starting July 10. Look for
an email this summer reminding parents to pay their student(s) fees
prior to the beginning of school.
Important Notes:
* Families with incoming kindergarten students, the system will
require you to review and verify your incoming kinder-
garten student’s information along with your other children.
* If you are planning to leave the district prior to the 2017-2018
school year, please complete the online registration
until your family has officially transferred.
* Please complete the Transportation Google Form when prompted if
your child(ren) will be using district transporta-
tion before or after school. This form will need to be completed
for EACH student that will be riding the bus from
your household. This Google Form replaces the paper form that in
the past was distributed at the end of the school
year. Information you submit on the Transportation Google Form is
the information used to place your student(s) on
the correct bus route for the 2017-2018 school year.
**Remember the Transportation form was already completed for
Kindergarten students when registration was done in
February, therefore it will not need to be done again for those
students.
Please contact Amber Jungst at 515-597-2811 or via email at
[email protected] with any questions regarding
the Online Registration Process.
The more that you READ, the more things you will KNOW. The more
that you LEARN, the more places you’ll GO. –Dr. Seuss.
This quote holds true in the hearts of the first grade team at
Ballard West. First grade is a wonderful year of many “firsts”. One
of the best “firsts” is becoming a confident, fluent reader. To
help our stu- dents become readers we ask them to keep a log of the
minutes they spend reading at home. They can count minutes that
they read to someone, minutes they read independently, and minutes
they spend listening to reading. Many of the students were able to
log 3,000, 4,000 even 8,000 minutes this school year. The first
grade teachers would like to say CONGRATULATIONS to the first grade
stu- dents at West and THANK YOU parents for encouraging your
children to be readers! The following are the top readers from each
classroom:
Mrs. Richardson – Charlie Easter Mrs. Raineri – Emefa VanLoo Mrs.
Ford – Anna Philgreen Mrs. Dietrich – Kendal Albaugh Miss Prins –
Elizabeth Dolan Mrs. Schroder – Tate Leland

I have been an elementary school counselor at Ballard for 23 years.
Ballard is a wonderful community and I have loved the op-
portunity to serve this district, at first for both buildings, then
as we have grown, at West.
Life Skills Curriculum:
At West, Life Skills has focused on social skills; like listening,
sharing, teamwork and conflict resolution. We have also ex-
plored what each child sees as their strengths. This year I added
executive skills. Executive skills are the skills that are
used
when people purposefully manage their thinking or behavior to
achieve some desired outcome. For students, the outcome could
be organizing and completing an assignment, making an art project,
or getting a group of people to work or play together pro-
ductively. There are many executive skills, but the ones I have
focused on are planning, organizing, starting and completing
a
task, stopping to think before acting, emotional control, and
focus. If you are interested in helping your children toward
success,
look up executive skills and consciously work on the development of
those skills in their lives.
Experiencing Other Cultures:
Since 2007, I have invited international Iowa State students and
employees to
come visit our school and share information about their country
with our students.
The first few years they visited third grade students, but since
they moved to East,
the visitors have shared with our second grade classes. Some of the
things they
have shared about have been the culture, language, art, education,
music, dancing,
cities, interesting sites, and food. This year we had speakers from
China and Mex-
ico. The students each have a “passport” with a map of each country
and 6 boxes
in which they can write something that they have learned. The
visitors each bring
a little snack from the country for the students to try. The
students and the visitors
have loved this activity. One of my speakers has been coming for
all of the eleven
years that I have done this!
Thank You:
Thank you for sharing your children with me over the years. I have
loved being a school counselor and English as Second Lan-
guage(ESL) teacher at Ballard. Starting with the 2017-18 school
year, I will serve as the full-time K-12 ESL teacher. I am
looking forward to focusing on teaching students for whom English
is not their first language for the whole district. I am
excit-
ed for this new opportunity. I also look forward to working with
our new guidance counselor, Erin Adams, in the fall.
These pictures are some of the hot air balloons that the second
grade students
made as they worked on conflict resolution.

There are lots of exciting changes happening at Ballard West
Elementary, but one of them is already complete, thanks to the
outpouring of generosity from our wonderful community! The 2nd
graders received a grant from the Ballard Education Foundation to
rejuvenate the butterfly garden on our playground. We reached out
for some landscaping expertise and hit the jackpot! An amazing
Ballard family offered to help us design, prep, and plan the new
layout of the garden. They also donated their time, labor, and many
of the new plants. Therefore, we were able to spend our BEF grant
money on some other fun things like accent plants, birdfeeders,
butterfly feeders, and more! We were also able to extend the
project to
include the Memorial Garden in front of our school. It got a
complete makeover and now looks beautiful once again!
The second grade classes each had a special job in the gardens. A
few classes worked on the Memorial garden out front. They planted
new plants, spread mulch, and watered. In the butterfly garden out
back, the rest of the classes planted, watered, and spread the new
rock for the beautiful path through the garden beds. Each class
also created a class rock for the garden. We chose short and sweet
sayings to paint on the rocks. For example, “Be Friendly,” “Be
Brave,” “Be Happy,” etc. Each student wrote their name on their
class rock and these rocks will be displayed throughout the garden.
There will also be a Buddy Bench in the garden next year for kids
to sit at when they need a friend to play with or just to
sit and relax. The kids have been very helpful and deter- mined to
keep our garden looking it’s best! They enjoy pulling weeds and
watering it during recess. It’s been a wonderful experience for
everyone! We are so thankful for the families and friends of
Ballard that help make our school the best place for our kids! We
would like to extend a special thanks to the Ballard Education
Foun- dation, a very special Ballard family, and to Ashley Ho- kel
for all of their hard work and generosity! Without these people, we
could not have made the Ballard West gardens so beautiful
again!

Another successful year at Ballard East draws to a close. The
year’s end always brings with it a tremendous sense of
accomplishment. It is amazing how much has been achieved by the
students, staff, parents, and community members. As a school we
have seen our stu- dents make academic strides, develop personally,
and demonstrate great character. We have received support from
parent volunteers, the mentoring program, and donations from the
PTO and Ballard Education Foundation. All of us working together
ensures that our students and teachers are able to provide what is
best to support learning for our kids. As a school we have put many
interventions and strategies in place to enhance learning and to
provide numerous educational opportunities. At Ballard East the
achievements ex- tend from the academics to creative arts, and to
the numerous classroom exploits. We had fun learning at our
building luau, listening to our third graders as they transformed
in- to wax museum characters, learned history from the fourth grade
super senior day, and were impressed by the fifth grade readers in
the battle of the books. We have enjoyed, and been impressed by the
hard work and efforts of our students at the art show and mu- sic
concerts. We have stayed fit and healthy as we had fun at field day
and during our school fitness walks, and learned many life lessons
as we have worked together this past year.
From Ballard East we hope you enjoy summer fun and read, read,
read!

A group of 12, 8th grade young ladies from Ballard Middle School
participated in a 7 week Leadership group facilitated by Brenda
Zobel-Moody (Middle School counselor) and Sarah Elm (Iowa State
intern). The group discussed various topics about leadership, such
as identify- ing characteristics of good leaders and recognizing
some of their own charac- teristics of what they consider good
leadership. They pin pointed some areas of strengths and weaknesses
of their own and have had some opportunity to role play leadership
scenarios. They had the opportunity to video skype with Lynd- sey
Fennelly, known leader for her basketball skills training/team
building/ leadership program experience, along with opening her own
Spin Cycle busi- ness in Ames, Iowa. They also were able to visit
the workplace of Iowa Motor Truck Association, where Brenda
Neville, President of Iowa Motor Truck Associ- ation, shared her
story and vision of leadership. Both speakers left the girls with
valuable, thought-provoking ideas on how they can become leaders of
to- morrow in their school and community. The girls completed the
group by de- veloping their own belief statements in regards to
leadership. They are listed as follows:
I believe… when busyness comes, you should always take a moment to
breathe and recognize all of life’s blessings. I believe…that your
actions can affect people’s impression of you. I believe… that
people will surprise you when you least expect it. I
believe…everyone has a story and you shouldn’t judge that story. I
believe…you never know what people are thinking so you don’t have
to care what they think. Be yourself. I believe…there is a bright
side to every situation, sometimes you just have to look a little
harder. I believe…that things happen for a reason. I believe…that
you shouldn’t judge someone because of their past, race or beliefs.
You should treat everyone
equally. I believe…that you should treat people how you want to be
treated. I believe…that people are equal no matter where they are
from. I believe…that when you fall you can always get back up. I
believe…that no matter how small you are, anyone can make a
difference.

Bill Horine Outdoor Writing Contest Congratulations to Jarrett
Miller, a sophomore at Ballard High School, for winning third place
in the Bill Horine Outdoor Writing Contest sponsored by the Story
County Conservation. Jarrett was awarded $50 for his submission
about hunting with his father and brother titled “A Morning to
Remember.”
Local Students Earn Honors by Taking a Stand in History at the
National History Day® Contest Grace Long, a sophomore at Ballard
High School, and Audra Jahn, an eighth grader at Ballard Middle
School, in Huxley, Iowa, recently competed in State National
History Day Contest held at the Iowa Events Center in Des Moines,
Iowa, May 8, 2017. Their projects were selected to advance to the
National-level National History Day Contest in Washington, D.C.,
held on the University of Maryland campus, June 11 through June 14,
2017. The 2017 theme for the contest was Taking a Stand in History.
Long and Jahn joined students from across the state who completed
projects in one of five categories: documentary, exhibit, paper,
perfor- mance, or website. Grace created an individual paper titled
“Harriet Beecher Stowe: Lifting Her Pen to Take a Stand Against
Slavery”. Audra created an individual documentary titled “Small by
Mighty: The Bir- mingham Children’s Crusade of 1963.” After
completing a project, students compete in a series of contests
beginning at the local level. The top students in all 50 states,
D.C., U.S. territories and international schools are given the
opportunity to at- tend the National Contest. “The work students
put into these projects is astounding,” said NHD Executive Director
Dr. Cathy Gorn. “To make it to the National Contest is a remarkable
achievement. Less than 1% of all projects make it to this level. It
requires a superb level of research and critical thinking skills. I
am confident we will continue to see great things from all of these
students because the skills learned through competing in NHD help
prepare students for success in college and career.” NHD is a
non-profit education organization in College Park, MD. Established
in 1974, NHD offers year- long academic programs that engage over
half a million middle- and high-school students around the world
annually in conducting original research on historical topics of
interest. These research-based pro- jects are entered into contests
at the local and affiliate levels, where the top student projects
have the op- portunity to advance to the National Contest at the
University of Maryland at College Park. NHD also seeks to improve
the quality of history education by providing professional
development opportunities and curriculum materials for educators.
NHD is sponsored in part by, HISTORY®, Jostens, the National En-
dowment for the Humanities, the National Park Service, Southwest
Airlines, the Joe Weider Foundation, and the WEM 2000 Foundation of
the Dorsey & Whitney Foundation. For more information, visit

Kari Holmes and other members of the Ballard High School Student
Council presented
Brett McLain from the Story County Commission of Veterans Affairs a
check for $700.
Holmes, Renee Houlette, Summer McVicker, Emma Clinton, Anna Zielke,
Erin Roch-
leau, and Sarah Kamp all helped with a STEM carnival that raised
money to help vet-
erans. Part of the proceeds from the STEM carnival were used to
send care packages
to active service men and women, and the remainder was given to
Story County Veter-
ans Affairs to assist local veterans. The entire project was
planned by Madison Vin-
cent, Maddy Connell, and Sara Wilken who were unable to be present
for the photo.

One option for remediating credits is through the Success Center,
located in the Guidance Office at Bal- lard High School. All
courses taken in the Success Center are taken through a web-based
program called Edmentum Courseware (Plato). This program is
overseen by Lisa Doland and Kellie Boock will be the fa- cilitator
in direct contact with the students enrolled in the Success Center
during the summer and through- out the school year. We will be
offering students the opportunity to recover their failed courses
through the Success Center during the summer term. This session
will run from June 12, 2017 through August 4, 2017. Mrs. Boock will
have regular office hours throughout the summer. Each student will
be required to have contact at a minimum, once weekly and the
Success Center will be available for students to use during these
office hours. This is an overview of the guidelines and basic
information regarding the Success Center and Plato Recovery Credit
Courses. The summer session will begin on June 12 and end on August
4. Sign-up for recovery credit classes will be anytime from the
present to June 15th. All students must check in on one of the
following days; June 12, 13, 14, or 15 2017 to get their
class/classes setup or check in. If exceptions need to be made, or
if there are any other questions, please contact me at
[email protected] or 515-597-2971 ext 2180. Summer School

running through June 14th.
2. The Plato check-in will be held in the Success Center located at
Ballard High School in the Guidance Office.

in person.
4. Regular Office hours will generally be held on Tuesdays and
Wednesdays between 7:00 am and 11:00 am. This is tentative and I
will work with students to ensure that they get the help that they
need. Any changes in office hours will be posted on my office
window. Hours may change based on student needs. Students may also
work on their courses from home computers.
