Class Assemblies Class 1S made us all extremely hungry on Wednesday morning aſter their 'Food Glorious Food' assembly. It was a joy to see how confident and happy they all were to perform and share. They sang several songs beaufully with acons and instruments, including their rap on doubling numbers. They told us about the excing me they have had learning about the chicks. Their fruit and vegetable faces artwork were really impressive. Well done to Class 1S, Mrs Suon and Miss Peaty - it was glorious!! We were all blown away by Class 5A’s assembly about their topic on the Anglo Saxons. This included drama (at least two bales!), singing and humour. It is very clear how much the class are enjoying their learning; it was a pleasure to see them perform word perfectly and with such confidence, enthusiasm and joy. Well done Class 5A and Mr Anderson. Missing in Acon! Key Stage 1 across both sites were in uproar at the beginning of this week when their beloved 5 R characters went missing from EVERY classroom! The children searched high and low to find these fantasc learners. They created wonderful missing posters to describe what each learner was like, and fortunately thanks to the children's hard work and understanding of each animal's characteriscs, Ready Ralph, Resourceful Raj, Reflecve Rose, Responsible Rita and Resilient Ruby were found on Tuesday aſternoon. The teachers are very proud of how well the children have responded to our new 'thinking about our learning' approach. Giant Sandwich Morning Last Friday the EYFS at both Streatham and Balham had a 'fe fi fo fun me'! All children took part in creang and making the tallest giants sandwich and even some crisps for his lunch. This was a very successful morning in which the children used their higher order thinking skills and also pracced their cung skills to ensure their sandwich stood tall. World Book Day Thursday 5th March is World Book Day, so we will have lots of exciting things going on, including the Book Fair (5th - 10th March inclusive), EYFS and KS1 pyjama party and reading cafe (Friday 6th March), a lunchtime book swap and a visit from the poet Terry Caffrey. It promises to be a busy and exciting week raising awareness of the importance of reading and exploring stories and poetry. Get Caught Reading! Where do you like to read? Over this half term holiday we are running a competition to catch children (and staff!) reading in weird and wonderful places. We want to see where you have been caught reading (as long as it is safe!) in a photo with your name and class on the back. Entries to be handed to class teachers or emailed to [email protected] and mark for attention of Miss Harding by Thursday 26th February. Winners will be announced on World Book Day. A Day at the Museum Last week Year 5 enjoyed a fantastic trip to the British Museum. They were excited to see items found in the Anglo-Saxon ship at Sutton Hoo as well as explore all the other artefacts from the Dark Ages. They also had a peep at the Aztec section to see the real Aztec masks, similar to ones they created last term. It was great to really bring the Anglo-Saxon period alive!

Bike and Scooters Please may I remind parents, carers and pupils that NO bikes or scooters are to be ridden in the playground before and after school. There have been several accidents recently which were a result of children riding very fast and being unable to stop when a young child got in the way. Please make sure that you keep an eye on your child and remind them to follow the school rules.

Barclays Code Playground At Henry Cavendish we have embraced the new Computing Curriculum and our children are becoming experts on Scratch (which is a programming language). Our older children are also starting to code, which is very impressive! Our Code Club are making their own games, such as Flappy Bird, using code!! Online we have found 'Barclays Code Playground’, which teaches children to code online in a fun way. Barclays also run monthly 2-hour coding sessions for children aged 7 to 17 in selected branches. It’s a great way to learn the basics and develop digital skills for the future. Something to check out our half term. Happy coding! http://barclayscodeplayground.co.uk/

Tag Rugby Scores Last week our (HC) Tag Rugby team played against Kings Avenue Primary School (KA). The team were impressive as they won 3 matches and drew 1. The scores are: PE Games The Year 1 and 2's had great fun in Balham this week learning new games in PE. The incredibly creative Year 2 children created a new game that focused on one core skill of either throwing, catching or balancing. They made a plan, practised the game and then taught it to some very keen and engaged Year 1 children. Great team work was shown by our Year 2 pupils, their teachers were impressed and think we have some teachers in the making!

We are incredibly lucky to have a newly formed group of parents who are helping to promote along with Miss Page the PE and Sport provision at Henry Cavendish. They are helping to ensure the children have the highest quality PE and sporting opportunities within our school as this is incredibly important to us. The team have many ideas and activities in the pipeline but the first thing is that they have managed to gain funding for the PTFA to purchase a class set of basket balls, rugby, netball and footballs for each site. They have also bought football goals to be used at playtime and during lessons at both sites. We are incredibly grateful and the children are really enjoying using all the new resources.

A huge thank you to our Year 6 PE leaders Emeka and Stefan and to Miss Palmer, Mrs Comb, Mr Lindner and Year 3 in Streatham for pumping up all the balls!

Year 6 Girls Cup Final - They did it!! A huge congratulations to Parris, Natalie, Mia, Misha, Saskia and captain Linda from year six who won the Lambeth Schools Girls Football Cup, triumphing 4-0 in their semi-final against Vauxhall, then winning 1-0 in a tense final against St. Anne’s. They have made us all very proud and created history with their heroics. In twelve matches, they scored a staggering 57 goals, conceding just 1! Amazing. I would also like to thank Lauren from Teachsport, Asher (6W) and the Year 5 girl footballers for all their help with training. Mr. Rhydian (a very proud) Football Coach Class Musical Instrument Performances

This week some of our KS2 classes performed pieces of music to parents and children that they have been mastering over the last few months. It was a truly impressive experience to see the talent and dedication of our children and staff.

We were treated to a fantastic performance by Classes 4H and 4M's orchestra! Alistair from Lambeth Music Service has been teaching the children to play brass instruments and this was a showcase of their amazing talent! Before starting to play, each child introduced their instrument and the sound it made - including the saxophone, clarinet, euphonium and the trombone. The classes then played pieces such 'Digging for the Doh', 'Old Blues', 'Meet the Band' and a medley. They also sang an African song and showed off their amazing voices. Thank you 4H and 4M!

The music continued to resonate throughout the school. The strings concerts where our violinists and cellists in Class 4C and 4G showed us how brilliantly they play as an ensemble. The music they made was both dramatic and beautiful. Given the short amount of time the children have been learning their instruments, we were very impressed with the confidence of both classes and their skillful playing. Well done to all the children, the adults who support our budding musicians and to Jose and Paulina, the teachers from the Lambeth Music Service.

Class 3B performed songs absolutely perfectly at their ukulele concert. They showed us just how good they have become by not only being able to play in a round but also being able to sing and play at the same time! Absolutely superb Class 3B, Mr Balmer and Mrs Harper.

Year Three's ukulele concert at Streatham was also fabulous. The audience sang along with 'Frere Jaques', 'Swing low' and 'My Dog has Fleas!' The children were very well organised, adept at playing their instruments and their singing was lovely! Well done to year three, Mrs Harper and the adults who work with them.

Class 5A demonstrated how hard they have worked on learning to play the keyboard and piano. Each group had clearly developed their skills and should be extremely proud of their accomplishments. They played a range of lovely tunes and melodies including old favourites like ‘Amazing Grace’ and ‘Noodles’ to the new classic ‘Stay with me’. Fantastic work Class 5A and Mrs Low.

Governors Report to parents At their meeting last week, the Governors reviewed activities in Henry Cavendish’ School Development Plan, and discussed priorities for the year. There will be a continued focus on the highest achievement for all pupils. Several Governors reported very enjoyable visits to their allocated year groups; they were very impressed by the quality of the teaching and learning and the happy atmosphere at the school. On a less happy note, Governors were very concerned that the parking problems at both Balham and Streatham seem to have worsened rather than reduced. They really hope that all parents and carers will have regard to the welfare of the whole community; access to the sites must not be blocked, and consideration must be shown for residents’ needs.
