Dinner with friends

While she was preparing dinner, Megan was thinking about her time in England. When she first arrived, she found the differences in American and British English quite difficult. At school, people talked about the head teacher and the timetable, and her friends talked about travelling on the Tube and visiting her flat.

It was easier for her friends at Horn Park School. They watched a lot of American television programmes and were more familiar with Megan’s language than she was with theirs. They knew about the hood and the trunk of the car, that people eat candy not sweets and that they ask for the check not the bill in a restaurant.

It isn’t only television and films that make American English more and more likely to be heard around the world. In addition, American singers are popular in many countries, so the words of their songs are also heard by a lot of people.
