Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ,
What happened to the First Sunday in Ordinary Time? Welcome to one of the many interesting peculiarities of a truly worldwide and ancient religion. What we call “Ordinary Time” is an English language rendering of tempus per annum – “time throughout the year.” This refers to the liturgical times that fall outside of the major seasons of Advent, Christmas, Lent, and Easter. Ordinary Time is called “ordinary” because the weeks are numbered, or ordered. Ordinalis, which refers to numbers in a series, stems from the Latin word ordo, from which comes the English word “order.” Ordinary Time officially began this past Monday, and its liturgical color is green. Since Sunday is the beginning of a week, perhaps a better rendering of today’s translation might be “Sunday of the Second Week of Ordinary Time.” Regardless of the reason for the name, Ordinary Time is, in fact, the ordered life of the Church – the period in which we live our lives neither in feasting (as in the Christmas and Easter seasons) nor in penance (as in Advent and Lent), but in watchful expectation of the Second Coming of Christ. Thus, it is far from “ordinary” in the other sense of the word. Ordinary Time this year continues until Ash Wednesday, March 5, the beginning of Lent. This Monday through Thursday all of the priests of the Diocese will be in Hilton Head for our annual Priest Convocation. Because of this, St. Mary’s will not have daily Masses or confessions Jan. 20 – 23 (Mon. – Thurs.). Mass and confessions will resume as usual on Friday, Jan. 24. Finally, life matters. You matter. Your prayers matter. Your sacrifices make a difference. On January 22 our nation will mark the 41ST anniversary of Roe v. Wade, the Supreme Court decision that made abortion legal throughout the U.S. Since that tragic decision, more than 55 million children's lives have been lost to abortion, and many suffer that loss – often in silence. Join thousands of Catholics across the country coming together in prayer for a Culture of Life from Saturday, January 18, to Sunday, January 26. We are called to pray, fast, and sacrifice these days for Life. To find out more about participating (perhaps even about traveling to the March for Life in Washington, D.C.), visit usccb.org and click “Nine Days for Life.”
Yours in Christ, Father Wilson
“Every child that isn’t born, but is unjustly condemned to be aborted, has the face of
Jesus Christ.… Things have a price and can be for sale, but people have a dignity that
is priceless and worth far more than things.” – Pope Francis

“How do I know what God wants?” Knowing the will of God can be an intimidating topic for people of all ages. In this talk, Fr. Larry Richards, the founder of The Reason for Our Hope foundation, delves into the process of discernment. With personal stories, practical steps, and sound advice, Fr. Larry encourages all of us to dedicate ourselves to living the life that God has planned for us. It is in living this life that we will be truly happy.
What an inspiring talk! Fr. Larry gives us specific ways
to discern God's will for our life, we just have to take
the time to do it! Cheryl-Vernon, NJ
