TheCatholicSchoolsDepartmentoftheDioceseofOaklandexpressesgratitudetotheStaffDevelopmentCommitteeforitsworkinrevisingandupdatingourReligionCurriculumStandards.

ThespecialcharacteroftheCatholicschoolanditsCatholicIdentityistheunderlyingreasonforitsexistence.Itispreciselythequalityofthe

religiousinstructionintegratedintotheoveralleducationofthestudents.OureducationalgoalsarerootedinChristandtheGospel.

TheserevisedstandardsarebasedonthecurrentCatechismoftheCatholicChurch,DoctrineandTraditionoftheCatholicChurchaswellasSacredScripture.TheyprovideforandencourageauthenticexperiencesoffaithandemphasizeChristianService.

Itisthehopeofthecommitteethatwiththesestandards,wewillbeabletocontinuetofosterqualityreligiouseducationprogramsinourCatholicschools.

MISSIONSTATEMENT

ThemissionofReligiousEducationfortheDioceseofOaklandistoassiststudentsinfosteringarelationshipwithChristthroughprayer,sacraments,scripture,and

knowledgeofRomanCatholicdoctrine.TheteacherswillbewitnessesoftheCatholicfaithinprovidinganatmosphereforevangelizationandcatechesiswithemphasisonbuildingaCatholicIdentitywithinthe

community.Recognizingtheprimaryroleofparentsasfirstwitnessesoffaith,theteacherswillworktoassisttheparentsincommunicatingfaithtotheirchildrenrelyingontheenergizingpowersoftheHolySpirit.

INTRODUCTION

TheReligionCurriculumGuidelineStandardshavebeendevelopedbyacommitteeofprincipalsandteachersintheDioceseofOakland.TheoutcomeshavebeenorganizedandstructuredtobeinalignmentwiththeCatechismoftheCatholicChurch.

Theseoutcomesareintendedtogivedirectiontoteachersinplanningtheirlessonsandguidanceforfacultiesinenrichingthecurriculumandprovidingneededin-servicesforteachersofreligion.

Thestudentperformanceoutcomes,ratherthantextbooks,shouldbethefocusforplanningthereligioncurriculum.Thetextbookandsupplementalmaterialsaretoolstoteachandenhancethecurriculumandshouldbeusedtosupportandachievethestudentoutcomes.Theteachershouldbeteachingtotheoutcomes,notthetext.

AllreligiontextbooksusedintheCatholicschoolsoftheDioceseofOaklandmustbeinconformitywiththeCatechismoftheCatholicChurchandappearontheConformityListingofCatecheticalTextsandSeriespublishedbytheUnitedStatesCatholicConferenceofBishopsCommitteeonCatechesis.
