Martin Suter, born in Zurich in 1948, is a writer, columnist and screenplay author. Until 1991, he worked as a creative director in advertising, before deciding to focus exclusively on writing. His novels have enjoyed huge international success. 2011 saw the debut of his crime novel series, Allmen and the Dragonflies. Martin Suter lives with his family in Zurich.

»A holiday read of the very highest quality. Excellently researched, as usual,

and apparently checked for authenticity by those in the know.«

Martin Ebel / Tages-Anzeiger, Zurich

»In Montecristo, the author remains true to his usual elegant style and polished dialogue.«

Franziska Wolffheim / Spiegel Online, Hamburg

»An exceptionally gripping, well written book, the type you don’t want to put down

until you find out how the showdown ends.«Regina Krieger / Handelsblatt, Düsseldorf

»Martin Suter’s thriller is wry, cryptic and action-packed. If you love crime thrillers,

then don’t miss this!«Janis Voss / emotion, Hamburg

»Martin Suter’s thriller plunges into the world of money and high society.

So well researched that you cannot help but reconsider the good old method of keeping

your savings tucked away under the mattress.«Gentlemen’s Quarterly, Munich

»Taking visible pleasure in the plotting and detail, Martin Suter has created a smooth,

character-rich play of intrigue which is easily understood despite the complex material, and has well-known names vouch for its

authenticity.«Alain Claude Sulzer / Neue Zürcher Zeitung

»A fast-paced novel with a finale reminiscent of Dürrenmatt.

This is Suter’s most political novel so far.«Wolfgang Herles / zdf – Das blaue Sofa, Mayence

»A thriller, set in the banking world, which reveals that our financial system

is still built on sand.«Michael Meister / orf, Vienna

»The narrative is action-packed and leaves out absolutely none of the genre’s

typical thrills [. . .] and the reader learns a great deal about banks and monetary policy along the way.«

Montecristo is number 1 on the bestseller lists in Germany, Switzerland and Austria!

The press is raving:

Page 7: Diogenes Foreign Rights List Autumn 2015

MARTIN SUTERMontecristo

• Breathtakingly tense.

• Cleverly constructed and informative.

• Highly topical.

Jonas Brand has no idea about the adventure that awaits him, when the intercity train comes to an abrupt halt. The train is unable to continue because of a dead body on the tracks. Brand immediately shoulders his camera, records the nightmarish events and interviews his fellow passengers. He is a freelance journalist, but one who dreams of bigger things. He wants to make fi lms, and his project ›Montecristo‹, a story of betrayal, deception and late revenge, has blockbuster potential – if only someone would give him a chance. When he falls in love with Marina Ruiz, who charms him into revealing his dream, the project steps back into his focus. Just three months later, fate deals him another bizarre card: two one-hundred Swiss Franc notes with identical serial numbers – both of which, as the bank confi rms with amazement, are genuine. Then Brand’s apartment is ransacked and he gets beaten up and robbed in broad daylight. Someone clearly wants to throw him off the track that he is just about to embark on.

• By the author of A Grain of Sand, which has been longlisted for the ›German Book Prize 2014‹.

• An intelligent and enjoyable novel about growing old and the question: How do I want to die?

• Cryptic, philosophical and witty – an absolute pleasure to read.

Five old friends – successful, affl uent men who have shaped the country – venture into an experiment. Together they found a fl atshare in a beautiful house with a sea view, and make a pact: each of them should be able to die in the way he chooses – and the others will help him.

When it gets serious for the fi rst of them, they activate the ›Death Angel Programme‹ as designed by the computer buff of the fl atshare. And they hire Katarina, a nurse from Kirgizia, who has her very own ideas about how to fi ll the villa with life again . . .

have become so pressing precisely because they were suppressed for so long.«

Peter Henning / Der Spiegel, Hamburg

»Hartmut Lange’s exquisite depictions of the uncanniness of human life as well as the

nightmarish potential of suburbia seem ready-made for an art-house fi lm.«

HARTMUT LANGEThe View from the Window

• Stories about existential disturbances and about life’s breaking points.

• Written in clear, sparing and yet exceptionally concentrated prose.

Hartmut Lange’s stories are set in Munich, in a small town near Hamburg, on the Baltic Sea coast, and on the raw north-west coast of England. And again and again in Berlin, where past and present penetrate in a particularly palpable way. Eight stories which are as bright as day and mysteriously condensed, which depict and artfully capture precarious states of mind: deceptive promises of happiness, un-fulfi llable longing, the need of lonely people, the encounter with evil, the fear of failing.

Hartmut Lange’s books have been published in 9 languages.

»Hartmut Lange is not only one of the last grand masters of the novella, but also a virtuoso of a style refi ned to the last detail.«

BERNHARD SCHLINKExplorations

• The author Bernhard Schlink has been in demand as a lecturer and essayist for years.

• Nuanced intellectual explorations in the narrator’s clear and vivid prose.

How do we live with history? What must we remember, what are we allowed to forget? Do we need a culture of remembering? How far does our responsibility go? To whom do we owe solidarity, and what do we owe out of solidarity? What is the bad thing about betrayal? What makes our identity? Can we remain Christians if we have lost our belief? What does it mean to be a lawyer? How does the law change, and what is jurisdiction developing into?

Taking familiar defi nitions, everyday experi-ences and societal and political confl icts as a starting point, Bernhard Schlink explores complex topics which are both timeless and highly topical – in his typically descriptive narrative style.

Bernhard Schlink’s books have been published in 54 languages.

HANSJÖRG SCHNEIDERHunkeler’s Secret

• The ninth case for Inspector Hunkeler.

• Movie adaptation in preparation.

• A thriller about Swiss bankers, the path of the 1968 generation in society, and Swiss refugee policy during WWII.

Peter Hunkeler, now a retired inspector of the Basel police force, hospitalized following surgery and shared the room with an old acquaintance: Stephan Fankhauser, a colourful character. Once a wild member of the 1968 student movement, over the course of the years he made his way through the institutions and became director of a bank. Now Fank-hauser is seriously ill.

One night, Hunkeler had just been given a sleeping pill, he noticed a nurse with a ruby ring on her hand administering an injection to the fellow patient. Strangely, Fankhauser is resisting it intently. And does not the night nurse usually wear a diamond ring? The next morning, when Hunkeler wakes up, Fankhauser is dead. Was it all just a dream? Hunkeler is not sure, but he resolves to get to the bottom of the matter.

»One of Europe’s most important postwar dramatists.«The Daily Telegraph, London

On April 19th, 1947, Dürrenmatt’s first play, It is Written, premiered at the Schauspielhaus, Zurich. It was a calamity, and the audience whistled so loudly that the police had to intervene. Nevertheless, the author, 26 years of age at the time, went on to achieve world fame and attract an audience of millions as a dramatist. Romulus The Great, The Visit, The Physicists and many more remain among the most performed plays on the German stage to this day, as well as being (beloved!) school reading and »universally renowned, modern myths« (Le Monde, Paris). This edition features all plays with detailed references to performance and publication history, as well as a chronicle of Dürrenmatt’s life and work.

»A nightmare about democracy, Dürrenmatt’s play will always be pertinent.«

Frank Rich / New York Times

»His work gave world theatre larger-than-life characters with lasting impact.«

She has lived outside the usa since 1965 and worked as a travel guide in Rome, as a copywriter in London, and has also taught at American schools in Switzerland, Iran, China and Saudi Arabia. Donna LeonFalling in Love

Donna Leon’s Death at La Fenice, the fi rst novel in her beloved Commissario Guido Brunetti series, introduced readers to the dazzling world of Venetian opera and Italy’s fi nest living female soprano, Flavia Petrelli – then a suspect in the poisoning of a renowned German conductor. Aft er Brunetti kept her out of prison and went on to save the life of her female American lover in Acqua Alta, Flavia has once again returned to Venice and La Fenice to perform the lead in Tosca, and Brunetti has tickets to an early show.

The night he and his wife, Paola, attend, Flavia gives a stunning performance to a standing ovation. Back in her dressing room, she fi nds bouquets of yellow roses – too many roses. Every surface of the room is covered with them. An anonymous fan has been showering Flavia with these beautiful gift s in London, St. Petersburg, Amsterdam, and now, Venice, but she no longer feels fl attered. A few nights later, invited by Brunetti to dine at his in-laws’ palazzo, Flavia confesses her alarm at these excessive displays of adoration. Brunetti promises to look into it. And when a talented young Venetian singer, who has caught Flavia’s attention, is savagely attacked, Brunetti begins to think that Flavia’s fears are justifi ed in ways neither of them imagined. He must enter into the psyche of an obsessive fan before Flavia, or anyone else, comes to harm.

Patricia HighsmithThe Complete Ripley Novels

Collected here in this stunning box set edition, The Complete Ripley Novels celebrates one of fi ction’s most iconic literary characters. This collector’s item, featuring all fi ve classic Ripley novels –The Talented Mr. Ripley, Ripley Under Ground, Ripley’s Game, The Boy Who Followed Ripley and Ripley Under Water – is published to commemorate the twentieth anniversary of Patricia Highsmith’s death in 1995. The Highsmith literary renaissance, initially sparked by a 1999 fi lm adaptation of The Talented Mr. Ripley – which re-introduced fans and new readers alike to the unforgettable Tom Ripley, the debonair confi dence man with a talent for self-invention and murder – continues in full force with three major Highsmith movies in the offi ng as well as the publication of this volume, »the most sinister and strangely alluring quintet the crime fi ction genre has ever produced« (Enter-tainment Weekly).

»It’s a little on the nose that I love her so much. I read Ripley fi rst, back in the day,

and what a revelation her writing was. There was this sense of impending dread.

She’s a very spare writer. I remember having my body temperature physically altered,

becoming physically chilled at some point.«Gillian Flynn (author of Gone Girl)

Tomi Ungerer, born in 1931, is from a Strasbourg family of clockmakers. He botched his school-leaving exams, hitch-hiked across Europe and published his fi rst sketches in the German satirical magazine Simplicissimus. In the middle of the 1950s, he went to New York, where his incredible career as an artist, illustrator and children’s book author began. He lives with his family in southwest Ireland and in Stras-bourg, where the French state dedicated a museum to him.

»Tomi Ungerer loves playing with language, twisting and turning it, leading words ad absurdum. Sometimes corny jokes emerge –

but oft en surprising insights and poetic images too.«Matthias Kußmann / Südwestrundfunk, Stuttgart

TOMI UNGERERUseless Thoughts II

• The master of draughtsmanship as a brilliant and playful wordsmith.

• With wisdom, love for life, and humor.

Even before the volume Useless Thoughts, word got around that Tomi Ungerer was just as virtuous with a pen as with a pencil. He coaxes the deeper meaning from language, makes ludicrous connections, and twists and turns words come hell or high water.Wise jokes, revealing wordplay, pointed paradoxes – there is nothing more thought-provoking than reading these Tom-isms.

TOMI UNGERERAllumette

Allumette is Tomi Ungerer’s wild adaptation of Hans-Christian Andersen’s The Little Match Girl. Allumette, too, wanders the cold streets around Christmas time, cold and hungry and with no money or home to return to. But un-like the poor girl in Andersen’s tale, Ungerer’s heroine Allumette does not die of the cold, but gets everything she has ever wished for – and uses the power of that original wish to eff ect the betterment of society as a whole.A wonderful story with a happy ending and of course, Tomi Ungerer’s indispensable illustrations.

Die Frau auf der Treppe

Was ist Ihrer Karriere förder-licher – was Sie sagen oderwas Sie ver-schweigen?
