The word diphthong comes from Greek andmeans two sounds. The term refers to the use oftwo vowel sounds in a single syllable. The

characteristic of the diphthong that is differentfrom single vowels in consecutive syllables is themovement from one vowel to another.

In English the first vowel is stressed, and islengthened so that it is sung for most of

the duration of the note on which itoccurs. The second vowel is made lessprecisely, it is unstressed and it is short.

Note: this is different from Italian

    consecutive vowels.
