Dr. Simon D. NortonDr. Norton holds a Master’s Degree in Maritime Law and a Doctorate in Shipping finance. He is currently a lecturer in constitutional law and bank regulation at Cardiff Business School.

Dr. Norton has extensive experience in the Maritime Industry where he has worked for the Institute of Chartered Shipbrokers and has lectured extensively in the West Indies.

Dr. Norton is a trustee with a well-established London museum-art gallery, and takes an active role in London life. He is also a Friend of St. Paul’s Cathedral. He has published many academic articles in national and international journals in the fields of corporate governance and taxation. He has also supervised dozens of masters dissertations, and supervised a good number of students through to successful completion of their doctorates

Ship Operations and Crew ManagementThis module will look at the administration and operation of ships. It will also cover the function of the operations department within a shipping company, the crew management and the main divisions within Human Resource Management (HRM). You will also get an introduction to the techniques of HRM practice, whilst also looking at the employee involvement and the employee satisfaction: motivation and attitudes to work survey.

The Shipping BusinessThis module provides an overview of The Shipping Business. It explores maritime economics, the shipping market and supply and demand as well as fleet and transport supply and the decisions facing ship owners.

economics and shipping market cycles Categorise the global shipping industry, types of

owners, ships and include key international trade routes Evaluate the advantages and disadvantages of direct

employment versus the use of crew agencies Analyse how the manning of ships has developed

Management ConceptsThis module covers an introduction to management and provides an indepth look at topics such as planing used in the maritime industry, decision making, organisation designs and supervision of employees.

functions of planning, organising, leading and controlling and apply them to their everyday practice

Comprehend and identify the various types of plans used by shipping companies and learn how to apply basic planning rules

Marine InsuranceThis module will look at the overview of the Marine Insurance Act 1906 and the IUA/ILU Clauses and the marine insurance contract. It will also cover the introduction to marine insurance, the marine insurance contact and the main principles of marine insurance. You will also get an introduction on risk insured and exceptions, losses, particular/general average and the hull and cargo insurance.

Maritime Regulation and Industry BodiesThis module will look at the overview of the regulatory system, the regulating the maritime industry and the effect of regulations on the maritime economics. It will also cover classification societies, the law of the sea and coastal, port states. You will also get an introduction on the International Maritime Organizations (IMO), IMO Conventions, The International Labor Organization (ILO) and the UN conventions, while also looking at number of other topics.
