INTRODUCTION Politeknik Nilai(PNS), Negeri Sembilan adalah politeknik yang ke-23 ditubuhkan dibawah Kementerian Pengajian Tinggi Malaysia pada 1 April 2007 dibawah Rancangan Malaysia Ke-9. PNS mula beroperasi di kampus sementara dengan pengambilan pertama pelajar pada Disember 2007. PNS berpindah ke kampus tetap di Kompleks Pendidikan Bandar Enstek, Negeri Sembilan pada September 2011 di atas tapak seluas 101.5 ekar yang memuatkan 37 blok bangunan pentadbiran, akademik,kamsis dan kediaman staf. Kampus ini mampu menampung pelajar seramai 2,400 orang pelajar dengan kapasiti penginapan di kamsis seramai 1,200 orang pelajar. PNS menumpukan 8 program pengajian di peringkat Diploma yang dikelolakan oleh 3 jabatan utama iaitu Jabatan Agroteknologi dan Bio-industri, Jabatan Kejuruteraan Mekanikal dan Jabatan Perdagangan, disokong oleh 2 jabatan sokongan iaitu Jabatan Pengajian Am dan Jabatan Matematik dan Sains Komputer.

VISSION Politeknik Nilai, Negeri Sembilan menjadi institusi TVET dan pusat teknologi bio-industri. MISSION Menyediakan pendidikan dan latihan teknikal & Vokasional(TVET) berpaksikan pengetahuan,pengalaman,kemahiran dan penyelidikan bagi melahirkan graduan yang berkualiti,holistik,berciri keusahawanan serta beriltizam membangunkan negara .

1.1 PROGRAMME OVERVIEW

n recent years, Malaysian economic growth has created a lot of impact on the

consumers purchasing styles especially in retail industries. The growing demand

for highly skilled and knowledgeable workforce in retail industries provide jobs

to people in order to achieve organization goals. The know-how and skilled

workers need to embark especially in retail industries. With fast–moving and exciting

sectors, retail industries require strong leaders and energetic employees. This

curriculum integrates all activities in modern wholesale and retail industries. This will

give the students an added value to ensure that the knowledge and skills acquired

from this programmed are relevant with the needs of the retail industries.

Hence, the Department of Polytechnic Education (DPE) has worked collaboratively

with the nation’s retail industries in developing the curriculum for the programme.

This collaboration aims to equip students with the current knowledge and relevant

skills in meeting the global challenges and requirements of the retail industry. This

move is initiated, to blend learning with simulated real-life working experience which

will prepare students for a competitive edge in the workplace.

To address these issues, the Curriculum Development and Evaluation Division (CDED)

at Department of Polytechnic Education has introduced the Diploma in Retail

Management programme. This curriculum integrates business activities with the

relevant academicians and vocational retail management principles, technology, skills

and knowledge via a variety of innovative teaching and learning techniques

Diploma in Retail Management will provide students with the opportunity to obtain

knowledge in a competitive retailing environment. The business of retailing is the

most fascinating and vibrant industry and it is a major source of employment in

Malaysia. This program will equip the graduates with relevant knowledge and skills

to enable them to supervise and manage a retail store effectively.

1.2 PROGRAMME AIMS

Diploma in Retail Management enables graduates to fulfill the demand in the retailing

sectors in order to identify the needs and wants of discerning consumers. Graduates

will be compliant to the technologies to enable students in running retail business and

perform efficiently in managing wholly owned retail store in the competitive retailing

industry. Graduates will apply knowledge, creativity and analytical skills in numerous

areas to solve issues of current fast-paced environment. Graduates will also be

adaptable to the important retail concepts and practices. Graduates will expand self-

confidence to tackle challenging retail issues.

This programme provides the knowledge and skills in RETAIL MANAGEMENT field that

can be applied to a broad range of careers in RETAIL industries. The knowledge and skills

The Diploma in Retail Management program shall produce semiprofessionals who are: 1. Knowledgeable and competent in retailing, marketing and management discipline

to adapt themselves with challenges in business environment.

Upon completion of the programme, the students will be able to :

1.7 POLYTECHNIC GENERAL COURSES

General studies department was established with the objective to help Politeknik Nilai introduce students to the importance and value of spiritual, human and universal human values of purity in a dignified living as well as emphasizing the importance of using the English oral skills (speaking and communication) and writing skills. This will enable students functioning effectively in the context of his future. In daily life every human being cannot prevent himself from human contact and interaction with each other. Thus, human relations through inter-personal aspects and intra-personal skills are an art which can assess the humanitarian in a person. Behaviour and actions cannot be taught through a technical education and professional skill only without spiritual and human values. Advanced nations in science and technology, but disregards the aspect of human behaviour will be considered as no glory and goodness of these people even seen as a nation who are not civilized and dignified. Therefore, the general education department serves as a complement to all departments in Politeknik Nilai in helping the students fill in the spiritual and human values. The courses offered in this department are general courses which include modules in Islamic Education, Pengurusan Dalam Islam, Nilai Masyarakat Malaysia, Communicative English, Occupational Safety and Health and Co-Curricular.

1.8 COURSES SYNOPSIS

DPB1023 MICROECONOMICS MICROECONOMICS provides information on concepts, basic principles and related problems. The course emphasizes the demand and supply theory, elasticity and production as well as market equilibrium. This course also provides information on output level determination and market price structure. DPM1013 PRINCIPLES OF MARKETING PRINCIPLES OF MARKETING provides students with information on basic definition, concept and term in marketing, its orientation and the elements related to it. This course emphasizes the marketing principles, environment, segmentation, marketing mix, consumer and business marketing. DPR1013 FUNDAMENTALS OF RETAILING FUNDAMENTALS OF RETAILING offers a balanced descriptive, how-to, and conceptual approach for understanding the retailing and the decisions made by the retailers. Throughout this module, many different types of both merchandise and service retailers are described. Course content includes conceptual information so that students will understand why different decisions should be made in different situations.

DPA1013 FUNDAMENTALS OF ACCOUNTING FUNDAMENTALS OF ACCOUNTING enables students to develop knowledge and understand the operational aspects of accounting system and procedures. In addition students can comply with the accounting techniques to maintain accounting records in preparation of financial statements. Besides that, students will be able to explain the theory of accounting applied in the accounting cycle related to principles and practice of accounting. DPB1013 STATISTICS STATISTICS provides knowledge and exposure to basic statistical concepts, techniques, and how to utilize these techniques in data collection processes. This course emphasizes on the knowledge and the ability to handle statistical data and interpret them effectively. This course also provides understanding on how to apply statistical data in relevant fields. DPR2013 MATHEMATICS FOR RETAILING MATHEMATICS FOR RETAILING course is designed for students’ enrollment in the dynamic nature of retailing. This course offers a balanced descriptive, how-to, and conceptual approach to understand retailing and the decisions made by the retailers. It also includes some conceptual information to enable the students to understand decision making in different situations. DPR 2023 CUSTOMER SERVICE CUSTOMER SERVICE course exposes students to the customer service concept, handling customer complaint, retail sales management and the roles of salesperson which emphasizes on the retail selling process and the necessary skills for making effective selling. DPB2023 MACROECONOMICS MACROECONOMIC provides information on the concepts of economics as a whole. The course emphasizes the role of economics sectors in determining the GDP. This Course also provides information on the importance of government policy to overcome the economic problem. (Prerequisite: DPB1023 MICROECONOMICS) DPB3023 COMMERCIAL LAW COMMERCIAL LAW provides knowledge regarding legal aspects and conducts of commercial transactions in Malaysia. The course is related to an introduction to the legal principles in Malaysia, basic principles of contracts, agency, and sale of goods, hire purchase, negotiable instruments and legal aspects of business entities. DPB2012 ENTREPRENEURSHIP ENTREPRENEURSHIP focuses the principles and concept of entrepreneurship. This course concentrates on the systematic methods of getting business ideas. This course also prepares the students on ways to conduct and control the business including fundamental of management, marketing and financing. It also emphasizes on the preparation of business plan, thus developing their entrepreneurial skills.

DPR3013 RETAIL OPERATION 1 RETAIL OPERATION 1 course provides a comprehensive overview of retail operations. Students are exposed to daily operating procedures, inventory management, merchandise handling, store design and pricing strategies. DPB3013 PRINCIPLES OF MANAGEMENT PRINCIPLES OF MANAGEMENT provides information on basic functions in management, explains the management theories as practiced in the organization. This course emphasizes the principles in management functions to ensure the efficiency and the effectiveness of their operation in the organizations. DPR5013 RETAIL OPERATION 2 RETAIL OPERATION 2 course provides a practical part of retailing. Students will be required to practically do routine operation in retailing. The operations include store and merchandise management, promotional strategies and activities, customer services and retail performance analyses, in order to enhance operational activities in retail stores. (Prerequisite: DPR3013 RETAIL OPERATION 1) DPR5023 RETAIL BUYING RETAIL BUYING course exposes students to retail environment and buying merchandise. This course also prepare the students with the knowledge in purchasing and inventory control as well as method of pricing and promotion of merchandise. DPB5023 INTRODUCTION TO RESEARCH METHODOLOGY INTRODUCTION TO RESEARCH METHODOLOGY provides an opportunity to develop working knowledge of research method, create student’s understanding in the technique of conducting research work and enable students to use knowledge gained from other disciplines for planning of research efforts. Expose students to a basic understanding of a scientific research process. This course emphasizes selecting an appropriate research title, writing the proposal, preparing and presenting the research proposal. At the end of the course, students should be able to use knowledge and skill to carry out scientific research. DPM3033 CONSUMER BEHAVIOUR CONSUMER BEHAVIOUR is a social psychology applied to consumption situations. This situation includes buying, selling, using and disposing consumer goods and services. At the end of the course, students should possess a working knowledge of attitude, perception, consumer’s decision making process and external factors that influence consumer behaviour. DPR6013 VISUAL MERCHANDISING VISUAL MERCHANDISING course is designed for students’ which cover all aspects of visual merchandising include window dressing and in-store areas. In addition, it discover the use of mannequins, the latest technology and how to construct and source props, and explain the psychology behind shopping and buyer behavior.

DPR6033 GLOBAL RETAILING GLOBAL RETAILING will expose students to the rapid challenges and practice in the retail working world. This course covers general issues in Malaysia such as retail safety and health, retail security, halal issues and legal aspects of retailing. In addition, it provides students with analysis cases related to the covered topics. DPB6043 BUSINESS PROJECT BUSSINESS PROJECT refers to academic project which include various areas such as accounting, business, insurance, banking, marketing, retailing, international business and logistics. It has an interest in understanding business research or new product and service development which applied in related field. Students will apply previous knowledge for the purpose of project report accomplishment and its presentation. Students are required to choose either business research or new product and service development. DPR6023 RETAIL PROMOTION RETAIL PROMOTION course enables the students to examine the range of methods used by retailers to promote their product and services. It examines various factors that determine the effectiveness of the retailer’s communication and the choice of appropriate promotional goals to identify the suitable messages and tools to be delivered to the consumers. DPB5063 DIGITAL ENTREPRENEURSHIP DEVELOPMENT DIGITAL ENTREPRENEURSHIP DEVELOPMENT introduces how to develop creativity and innovation and managing risk in starting up a digital business environment. This course will also guide the students on ways to conduct the process of buying and selling and control the business with emphasis on the preparation of i-business plan, thus developing the i-entrepreneurial skills. DPM3023 NEW PRODUCT DEVELOPMENT AND BRANDING NEW PRODUCT DEVELOPMENT AND BRANDING introduces students to new product and brand management. This course emphasis on product management and related decisions. It focuses on managing brand in order to ensure the products offered are competitive in current challenging market. DUB 1012 - PENGAJIAN MALAYSIA PENGAJIAN MALAYSIA memupuk penghayatan ke arah melahirkan generasi yang cintakan negara. Kursus ini juga dapat mendidik kelompok masyarakat yang mempunyai daya juang yang tinggi dan mampu menghadapi cabaran di peringkat antarabangsa. Kursus ini memberi penghayatan tentang sejarah dan politik, perlembagaan Malaysia, kemasyarakatan dan perpaduan, pembangunan negara dan isu-isu keprihatinan negara. Objektif kursus ini adalah untuk melahirkan warganegara yang setia dan cintakan negara, berwawasan serta bangga menjadi rakyat Malaysia.

DUE1012 COMMUNICATIVE ENGLISH 1 COMMUNICATIVE ENGLISH 1 focuses on developing students’ speaking skills to enable them to communicate effectively and confidently in group discussions and in a variety of social interactions. It is designed to provide students with appropriate reading skills to comprehend a variety of texts. It is also aimed to equip students with effective presentation skills. DUA2022 PENGURUSAN DALAM ISLAM PENGURUSAN DALAM ISLAM diperkenalkan untuk memberikan kefahaman kepada para pelajar konsep asas pengurusan Islam dan sejarah pengurusan di zaman Rasulullah SAW. Kursus ini juga membincangkan prinsip, etika, amalan terbaik pengurusan dan komunikasi dalam organisasi mengikut acuan pengurusan Islam. DUB2012 NILAI MASYARAKAT MALAYSIA NILAI MASYARAKAT MALAYSIA membincangkan aspek sejarah pembentukan masyarakat Malaysia, nilai-nilai agama serta adat resam dan budaya masyarakat majmuk. Selain itu, pelajar diberi kefahaman mengenai tanggungjawab individu dalam kehidupan dan cabaran-cabaran dalam membangunkan masyarakat Malaysia. DUE3012 COMMUNICATIVE ENGLISH 2 COMMUNICATIVE ENGLISH 2 emphasises the skills required at the workplace to describe products or services as well as processes or procedures. It also focuses on the skills to give and respond to instructions. This course will also enable students to make and reply to enquiries and complaints. (Prerequisite: DUE1012 COMMUNICATIVE ENGLISH 1) DUE5012 COMMUNICATIVE ENGLISH 3 COMMUNICATIVE ENGLISH 3 aims to develop the necessary skills in students to carry out a mini project as well as job hunting. Students will learn to present ideas through the use of graphs and charts. Students will learn the process of job hunting which includes job search strategies and making enquiries. They will also learn to write resumes and cover letters. The students will develop skills to introduce themselves, highlight their strengths and abilities, present ideas, express opinions and respond appropriately during job interviews. (Prerequisite: DUE3012 COMMUNICATIVE ENGLISH 2) DUA6022 KOMUNIKASI DAN PENYIARAN ISLAM KOMUNIKASI DAN PENYIARAN ISLAM memfokuskan kepada penguasaan konsep, kemahiran komunikasi dan penyiaran Islam bagi meningkatkan kefahaman pelajar secara holistik terhadap kursus ini.

1.9 REGULATIONS FOR COURSE REGISTRATION

GUIDELINE

1. Students must attach a copy of latest Final Examination Results 2. Obtain the signature of the course lecturer 3. Then submit the completed form to the Academic Advisor (PA) 4. Finally get the signature of Academic Advisor and Head of Department

CARRY COURSES/CARRY SEMESTER

1. Students need to repeat all failed courses (grade point <2.00) either the General Courses (such as Islamic Studies, Civilization etc) or the Technical Courses – to repeat the semester

2. Students must register to carry courses with courses that have been set for that semester after getting advice from the academic advisor and approval by the head of department.

3. Students should repeat all the learning activities of the courses in addition to other courses

DROP/ADD COURSES

1. Students who have registered for courses can drop or add courses, provided that the number of credit hours for that semester no less or no more than a specified number of credit hours

2. Students are not allowed to drop the carry courses that have been registered 3. The dropping and adding courses must be done within the prescribed period and they

must seek for advice from Academic Advisor (PA) and approval from Head of Department

DURATION 1. Registration courses – two weeks after registration 2. Drop/Add courses – six weeks after registration

COURSE EXEMPTION APPROVAL Approval for course exemption is the prerogative of the polytechnic and is final.

CONFERMENT OF DIPLOMA Student will be conferred certificate/diploma if they: 1. Pass all required modules 2. Achieve the required number of credit hours for the course 3. Complete industrial training and meet all related conditions 4. Fulfill all course requirements and is approved by the Examination Board

ATTENTION Students who have registered should follow the learning activities for the course. In order to evaluate the learning activities undertaken by a student, students must achieve a minimum percentage of attendance.
