What we have before us is another festival of graduated and professional work of the applied art and design. The exhibition of the final thesis by graduate and master students of graphic communication, graphic communication engineering, interior designer and cos-tume design from the three respectable higher education institutions from the Republic of Slovenia and the Republic of Serbia has set its aim to present a generation of young cadres who, through the projects in the field of applied art and design show their talent and professional maturity in resolving semantic and technical problems, as well as the problems of effectiveness of the process and method of visual communication.

Their work is characterized namely by the inventiveness and openness in their approach to the task, the research methods and finding the solutions to the problems. Mentors have de facto opened an intriguing area of research, and the best results were those who never faltered before the open. The fantastic dispersion within the areas is shown in this exhibition. It is very evident that great knowledge is epistemologically building up in our profession which we have a chance to get to know and experience through this and similar festivals. Accumulating what is common in the presented I dare say that our young professionals and mentors have avoided the customary way to common problem solving in product design or propaganda materials. Instead they turned to systematic problem solving of each thesis. What we have before us is an opportunity to experience the intro-jection of actualities and environmental problems in the context of the research area but also the border areas of applied art and design.

The exchange of experience and the research results at high academic level has long been the motivational drive of self-assessment and networking thus strengthening the ties and presenting the opportunities to participate and learn about current affairs. On the other hand, pleasantness of enthusiasm at meetings where the affection is sincere represents great satisfaction for our educational work and the work of our association. Organisation of exhibitions in professional associations of applied artists and designers opens the doors for young people, graduates and masters to institutions and agencies which can familiarize in detail with their early but mature works that have been selected. from this generation’s best students and young employees.

Implementation of OpenType features indigitization of Ivan Cankar’s handwriting

studentZineta MilakmentorDomen Fras

OpenType features allow the automation of substitutions and (re)positioning of glyphs, expanded language support and facilitate the production of handwritten fonts, enabling connections of glyphs and by simulating differences among them. The handwrit-ing of Ivan Cankar is very recognizable and legible. With the help of OpenType features the glyphs are interchanged to assure the connection between glyphs and avoid repetition.

Typography and information design onthe example of Slovenian railways

studentPrimož Škrl mentorKlementina Možina

This thesis focuses on the signage system of Slovenian Railways. The research focuses on typography as the most important element of information transmission. Considering the findings of some modern studies dealing with the legibility of typefaces, and taking into account the characteristics of the target media, a new typography named Postaja sans (station sans) was created exclusively for signing. In conclusion the thesis provides some guidelines for the actualization of the new system, which would make the information transmission more efficient and consistent.

Handwriting digitalization ofSlovene poet France Prešeren

studentAleš SalokarmentorKlementina Možina

The starting point of master thesis was an idea of digitization of the written word, where we specially focused on a life of a Slovene poet France Prešeren (1800–1849). Object of the study is poet’s handwriting and because someone’s handwriting represents diverse, but still taught and trained way of expression, we examined the origin of double latin alphabet which through time became the base for recording numerous world languages. Font Prešerna consists only from one glyph for each letter, with exception of capital letters L and S, therefore it was perfect for applying some of basic functions of OpenType programming.

Final design of calender

Footprint of January

In my thesis I made a planting calendar. The calendar is made of hand-crafted paper, which includes seeds. Each sheet of paper includes one type of seeds. The entire process of papermaking is environmentally friendly. Printing technique is screen-printing, because it is the only one that enables printing on rough materials as is paper with seeds. We used water-based inks, which are more ecological. The result of our project is planting calendar, which helps us with biodynamic gardening and includes data for sowing four different kinds of plants and moon phases. Each sheet of calendar may be torn and planted in the soil.

Design of non-verbal instrument for independent measurement of emotions - GRID EmoThis master thesis describes currently available instruments for measuring emotions and process of making „GridEmo“, based on the Geneva Emotion Wheel (GEW) instrument for measuring emotions. It has been recognised that consumer emotions play an important part during decision making proces considering that products we see today are very similar in quality, price and technically. Researchers have developed different methods and instruments for measuring emotions, and each of them has its advantages and disadvantages. This thesis addresses some of the methods and illustrates the deve- lopment of one such model called ‘’GridEmo’’.

Designing and generating typeface Judy and use of contextual alternates in OpenType font formatThis master thesis is about design process of contemporary typeface with purpose of investigating usage and impact of contextual alternates within the OpenType font format. For this purpose, a modern typeface Judy, that belongs to the class of Graphic typefaces, was formed and generated. One of the main characteristics within the Judy typeface is texture harmony of written text. This characteristic was achieved by designing authentic graphemes and improved by advanced option of contextual alternates. Also, the program code for implementation of contextual alternates was explained and usage of this OpenType Layout feature was shown.

Graphics interchange format asa media of fashion presentation Fashion photography is being replaced on a world wide web by a moving image in form of graphics interchange format, which allows us to present clothes in a whole new light. Through research of graphics interchange for-mat I am the first to define a concept of fashion animation as a media of fashion presentation in Slovenia. Graphics interchange format as a media of fashion presentation can be seen as one of the youngest forms of rendering clothes and human figure.

Crossroads

studentAlmina DurakovićmentorMateja Benedetti

This master thesis deals with the topic of costumes in the contemporary ballet in film, explores the difference between the viewer’s perception of the costumes in the film and on stage and seeks for common ground and discrepancies between the two since the viewer is moving through a partial illusion of time and space along with the camera, unlike the theater, where he/she views the show from a statical point. Moving the camera closer and further to the focal point requires the costumes to be made with much greater focus on the design, details, per-ception and the manufacture. The costumes from this Master thesis has been proclaimed by the European League of Institutes of the Arts (ELIA) to be one of the 28 best art projects in Europe.

Execution of bathroom renovationin a residential house

studentDaša KekecmentorMojca Perše

My clients had decided to renovate their bathroom because of worn out furniture, outdated materials, damaged installations and, above all, a desire to make a change. Renovation plans were prepared based on the client’s requests, ideas and financial capabilities. The main goal was to create a practical, but at the same time, warm and comfortable ambient. With the renovation we have not only dramatically changed the appearance, but also increased the perceived size of the room. The end result is a modern and practically designed room of hygiene and relaxation.
