La Marina Bar and Restaurant has been recommended by the most prestigious gastronomy guides, including the coveted Michelin Guide, where they have been mentioned for the last four years. Here they gained the BIB classification ‘Gourmand’ Award. They are also one of the 500 restaurants in Spain and Portugal where you can eat the best quality for the best price (average price per person between 30-35€).

However, recognising these difficult times, La Marina which is the most traditional Bar Restaurant in the Campo de Gibraltar area has come up with the “Executive Menus” from Monday to Friday for 20€ and “Family Menus” on Saturday and Sunday for the same price. This is an excellent offer that cannot be missed. They have also created a more informal and economic new Tapas Menu at the bar, where you can drink and eat with friends whilst enjoying the sea view. All this without losing the quality and tradition that distinguishes La Marina Restaurant founded in 1947 and declared a touristic and social interest. In 2009 it also won the highest distinction in the city of La Linea, the Golden Medal. Check out our website and our special menus for groups, flamenco shows and events, etc.

The Creation of karibu

It was a totally unforeseen chain of events that led us to find and purchase the plot of land in Sotogrande that was to become the setting for our dream home.

We were fairly happily settled in a large house high above Estepona, but it was gradually dawning on us that with great views, normally there’s a drawback –WIND. Some days the screeching of the Poniente drove us inside with all doors and windows shut tightly so it was in the back of our minds to perhaps re-locate (they say many residents of Tarifa have been driven mad by the wind – I believe it). However our sights were mainly centred on the other direction i.e. eastwards as our 3 children were keen to go to the English International School in Marbella.

By chance, another parent at their present school mentioned that she was going to look at Sotogrande School and would we be interested in coming with her. Out of politeness more than anything else we agreed as had nothing better to do that day. Well, we were fairly impressed with the vision of the new school put forward by the then headmaster which was to open the following year, but we had never even considered living in Sotogrande. (In those days it had rather a reputation of being “God’s Waiting Room”).

However, on the way home Robbie said ‘let’s just go and check out land prices’ – so we arrived at the Sales Office with what we thought was an impossible list of demands: woodland, wonderful views without wind, total privacy and … oh, a stream thrown in running through the plot!

However, Stephanie the nice German sales lady wasn’t the slightest bit fazed, in fact she knew just the plot. It was a grey, drizzly late Autumn day, everything would have looked miserable that day but the minute we set eyes on the plot we fell in love. So much so we ended up buying 3 to ensure we had no neighbours! So instead of moving to a nice civilized villa in Marbella we now owned 4000sq. mtrs of

Page 17: Direct Mag Issue 50

17

dense woodland on a 30 degree slope. To say Robbie had his work cut out is an understatement – to save money he decided to cut down the 48 eucalyptus trees (that needed to go to build the house) himself – the wood smoke from the bonfire became a permanent fixture that winter.

"To say Robbie had his work cut out is an

understatement"Luckily there were no neighbours in those days – we were the pioneers of that end of Calle Feria (no-one else was mad enough to take on such inhospitable land). All through that particularly cold and rainy winter Robbie slogged on doing his lumberjack bit while I madly tried to sell the Estepona house and get the three kids settled in the new school, meanwhile renting a little townhouse to live in (with our three dogs) while Robbie was on site each day.

Every weekend we picnicked on the land and got to know every inch of it, all the time marvelling that we had found such a paradise. The kids fished for crayfish in the stream and we attached an old tyre to a tree for them to swing on.

Meanwhile Robbie and I were planning the design of the house, making many drawings, (mostly on back of envelopes etc.) but both agreeing that it had to suit its surroundings, i.e. natural materials such as wood and stone to blend into the hillside, with huge picture windows at the back to give the “wow” factor and take advantage of the wonderful views of woodland.

This is when we decided that a timber frame house would suit all these requirements – we tracked a company down in Germany who made the frame from our design out of naturally insect repellent Douglas Fir and then shipped it on three huge lorries to Sotogrande.

After a lot of nerve-wracking adjustments to fit it on to the concrete basement already built (it nearly didn’t) we were ready to start construction with the German/British crew supplied by the factory – (who turned out to be a nightmare-demanding phone lines, internet, water and electricity as well as a site office

Page 18: Direct Mag Issue 50

18

for the German secretary from hell who glared at us like trespassers every time we visited our own site.) Anyway it was one of the best days in Robbie’s life when he ordered them off site. Unfortunately however that left him to finish the project himself by subcontracting the different trades and doing a lot of the work himself.

"maybe the best feature of Karibu and

definitely another “wow” factor"

The light at the end of the tunnel appeared the day they started to excavate the pool, drawn by us very roughly on a bit of paper to our own freeform design with natural rocks and a waterfall. William our Dutch pool man didn’t even raise an eyebrow at the unconventional design and calmly got on with the job creating maybe the best feature of Karibu and definitely another “wow” factor.

This project was and is a growing, developing, very personal dream for us. “Karibu”, so named as everyone remarked that they could be in Africa when they saw the garden and backdrop (it means welcome in Swahili) is our little bit of tropical paradise in Sotogrande. The only sounds are the birds and other wildlife inhabiting the woods, in winter accompanied by the rushing sound of the impromptu waterfalls that appear on the wooded hillside whenever it rains.

We have lived here for seven years and loved every minute of it. However the kids have grown and flown the nest for University etc. and we are now rattling around in an eight bedroom house, so regretfully we have decided to sell and downsize, but Karibu will always be the best place we ever lived and a paradise to bring our children up in.

The GWB are a four-piece acoustic band based in Madrid, Spain comprising of members from Ireland, England and the USA.

The band’s highly original line-up eschews normal guidelines by replacing drums with cajón (flamenco box drum) and electric guitar with trumpet rounded out by acoustic guitar, electric bass and four part harmonies. Their debut album, “Sky Pointing”, was mixed in Nashville by David Ferguson (Johnny Cash, Rick Rubin) and will be released in the US in October 2010 by NY label Cosmic Trigger.

The band’s lead singer and main songwriter Garrett Wall is featured vocalist on Ryan Reynold’s upcoming movie “Buried” and Spanish animated series “Pocoyo” as well as contributing material for several movies including “The Symmetry Of Love”, “First Dog” and “Tea & Sangria”.

Their second album “Hands & Imperfections” was released in Ireland in Feb and has seen two singles playlisted on RTE Radio 1 inlcuding “Is There No Freedom?”. The band returned to Ireland in late September to take photos and shoot a video for the release of their third studio album in 2011. They hope to kick off with a new single “Move A Mountain” in February.

More Concerts:The garrett wall Band will be

playing live around the local areas the beginning of the year, you can also see them playing in La Teteria the 21st January 2011 from 10pm “Hands & Imperfections”

make learning a language fun and enjoyable. The aim is that students can communicate with Spaniards outside the classroom and are able to have a comfortable life understanding and being understoodThe work methodology will be active, innovative and participative. The objective is to give a good service and we use the most suitable methods, combining grammar and theory with conversational practice. The student will be expected to be involved in the class. Theoretical expositions by the teacher will be combined with the individual and group work. All the areas of learning (speaking, reading, writing and listening) will be covered in the daily work class.

Courses and levelsThere are different courses at different levels (according to the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages). The main objective is that the students fulfill their aims and needs.

On the first day, the student will be assessed by taking a level test in order to be placed in the correct group. During the course, teachers will constantly be making a progress report monitoring the student. At the end of the course, a certificate of attendance will be given. This will include the level the student achieved after his/her studies in our school.

social and cultural activitiesThe professionals of the school are not constrained by the concept that learning only takes place in classrooms. We also think that being involved in the social and cultural life of Spain and being in touch with its people is important when learning a language. In this sense, students are encouraged to take part in a wide range of activities organised by the school. With these activities, they will be able to practise their Spanish with local people and they will reinforce what they have learned in the classroom.

The lifestyle programme includes both activities indoors (cooking lessons, special cultural sessions, flamenco lessons, etc) and outdoors (guided tours, typical Spanish shows, visits to bars and restaurants, visits to specials events and ferias, wine tasting, etc).

Skin analysing : your personal skin inspectorThe latest beauty fashion is to have a professional skin analysis.

The skin analyser provides an astounding amount of information on every type of problem that can effect your skin, thus helping you formulate an effective, personalised revitalization program or in choosing products.

It is not sufficient to simply know your skin type and buy products accordingly. You need to move to the next level and get your skin analysed to prepare for the future.

Skin analysis has become an indispensable tool. Based on the findings the therapist can then offer the right advice.

Many times clients assume things about their skin type and its condition, but it takes a professional analysis (carried out with the help of a specialised machine) to reveal exactly what is right and wrong.

What does the skin analyser do?The skin analyser produces results for five key areas: hydration, oil content, elasticity, biological skin age and pigmentation. Based on the diagnosis the advisor can tailor the correct skincare programme.

This personalised, in depth analysis reads key areas of the face and neck and reveals the blemishes and marks that are invisible to the naked eye.

If skin damage is treated in time you can stop further skin damage and improve the condition of your skin.

The records are maintained and used later for the follow-up of your skin condition. If you’re blessed with good skin, look after it as a gift.

Get a facial analysis done even if you’re young. Once your skin map is read, you will know what to do to preserve it.

sendero: arroyo de san Carlos del Tiradero

The main attraction on this walk is the leafy forest of Gall Oaks which lies between the huge natural park of Los Alcornocales and on the other side a river bank belonging to the beautiful River of San Carlos del Tiradero. The abundancy of water, the gentle temperatures, moderate sun and the type of soil have all contributed to make it possible for the Gall Oak to grow and thrive. It gives a pleasant contrast to the forest of Alder trees and makes for an attractive sheltered archway for the walk and also an opportunity for making some good photography.

“a leafy forest of gall oaks”Follow the road A-381 from Los Barrios to Jerez de la Frontera, take a left next to the existing bridge above the river Las Cañas taking a diversion towards Facinas. About 8 km. from the crossing you will see some houses and near the outskirts a wire fence where the itinerary starts.

Marca: Les Terrasses 06Tipo: TintoBodega elaboradora: Bodegas Álvaro palaciosorigen: D.o. prioratovariedad: Cariñena, garnacha, otras alcohol: 14.5 % volTemperatura servicio: 16º C. precio aproximado: 26.76 €

Álvaro Palacios is situated near to Priorat, which is in the locality of Gratallops. After the 1989 vintage a group of local producers decided to combine their different wines which would still retain the local characteristics of this area. The old vineyards of Grenache and Cariñena grow on the slatey soil of the terrain and with a Meditterranean climate of over 3000 hours of sun and a rainfall of less than 380mm annually it is the perfect climate for growing these vines.

The grapes are acquired by the bodega from their own land, and an addition of selected grapes from local viticulturists (grape growers) of Priorat, which they assess and choose themselves.

The grape varieties used for Les Terraces are Grenache, Cariñena and others. To produce the first wines they use 20% of the wine which is new and the other 80% are wines two to three years old. They then spend a year maturing in French oak barrels.

Tasting Notes: Intense morello cherry flavour, rounded and fruity aromas. Taste: medium bodied, full flavour and good acidity.
