Direct Object Pronouns:

Answering Who? Or What?

Direct object pronouns allow us to avoid repetition of nouns!

• A direct object receives the action of a verb and serves to answer the question What? or Whom? in relation to that verb

• Mariano drinks coffee. (direct object noun)What does he drink?

• Juanita helped him. (direct object pronoun)Whom did Juanita help?

• A direct object pronoun replaces a direct object noun. Some of the Spanish direct object pronouns should look familiar:

• Me me• Te you (tú)• Lo him, it, you (Ud.)• La her, it, you (Ud.)• Nos us• Los them, you (Uds.)• Las them, you (Uds.)

How to form the DOPSentence: We take the backpacks1. Who or what is doing the action?

We (Nosotros)

2. Who or what is receiving the action?

The backpacks (las)

Affirmative Sentences

• In an affirmative sentence w/ one verb, the DOP goes in front of the conjugated verb.

• Ej:– Yo te conozco– Ella lo sabe– Nosotros la conocemos

Negative Sentences

• In a negative sentence w/ one verb, the DOP is placed between the negative word (no, nadie, etc.) and the conjugated verb.

• Ej:– Yo no lo sé– Nunca lo estudias– Nadie la quiere

Affirmative Sentences• In an affirmative sentence w/ 2

verbs- the 1st verb is conjugated and the 2nd is in the infinitive- you have 2 options:

• 1. Place the DOP in front of the conjugated verb

• 2. Attach the DOP to the infinitive/

A)Lo puedo comprar

B)Puedo comprarlo

Questions/ Negative Sentences

• In a question and/ or negative sentences w/ 2 verbs, the DOP can be placed before the conjugated verb or attached directly to the infinitive.

• Ej:– No tengo que leerlo/ No lo tengo que

leer– ¿Tienes que estudaiarlo?/ ¿Lo tienes que

estudiar?

1. ¿Escribes la carta?

2. ¿Lees las instrucciones?

3. ¿Buscas el teléfono?

4. ¿Sabes la dirección?

5. ¿Terminas la tarea?

6. ¿Prefieres el libro rojo?

1. ¿Escribes la carta? Sí, la escribo.

2. ¿Lees las instrucciones? Sí, las leo.

3. ¿Buscas el teléfono? No, no lo busco.

4. ¿Sabes la dirección? No, no la sé.

5. ¿Terminas la tarea? Sí, la termino.

6. ¿Prefieres el libro rojo? Sí, lo prefiero.
