Toronado SWETTENHAM STUD
Swettenham Stud’s emerging stallion
Toronado (High Chaparral) will
remain at an unchanged service fee
in 2020, despite the shuttler siring a
number of exciting southern hemisphere-bred
first crop three-year-olds this season.
The Al Shaqab-owned Toronado heads the
six-stallion Swettenham roster at $27,500 (all fees
inclusive of GST) while the Adam Sangster-led
farm’s newcomer I Am Immortal (I Am Invincible)
will stand his first season at a fee of $13,750.
Swettenham Stud announced the acquisition
of the former Anthony Freedman-trained
sprinter, who won the Blue Diamond Preview
(C&G) (Listed, 1000m) and Blue Diamond
Prelude (C&G) (Gr 3, 1100m) at two, in February
but confirmed his service fee and that of his five
barn mates yesterday. Continued on page 2>>

Super Seth retiresto Waikato StudSuper Seth (Dundeel) has been retired to begin
stallion duties at Waikato Stud later this year,
and will be the first Caulfield Guineas (Gr 1,
1600m) winner to stand at stud in New Zealand
for 30 years.
Waikato Stud’s Mark Chittick, in unveiling the
farm’s 2020 stallion roster, confirmed that the
Anthony Freedman-trained three-year-old colt
would not race again after his closing fourth in
last Saturday’s All Aged Stakes (Gr 1, 1400m) at
Randwick.
The son of Dundeel (High Chaparral), who won
twice and was stakes-placed in three starts as a
juvenile before rounding out his racing career with
five victories from 12 starts, will stand for NZ$35,000
(all fees plus GST). Stud News page 11 >>

The service fees for Akeed Mofeed
(Dubawi) ($16,500), who relocated from Goldin Farms in South Australia
to Victoria last season, Highland Reel (Galileo) ($16,500) and Trust In A
Gust (Keep The Faith) ($6600) all remain unchanged.
Toronado is the sire of brilliant four-time Tasmanian Stakes winner Still A
Star, the stakes-placed Laverrod, Heaven’s Bonus and Sassy Salitage as well as
inaugural $1 million The Showdown
(1200m) successor Prince Of Sussex
in his first Australian crop.
Potentially his best horse
could be the Hawkes Racing-
trained Masked Crusader, a three-
year-old gelding who resumed
with an impressive victory at
Bendigo yesterday to make it two
wins from three starts.
Sangster admitted there was
much debate about increasing
Toronado’s Australian fee this
year, particularly with the appeal
his progeny carry in Hong Kong,
but the stud has instead elected to
keep it unchanged.
“Breeders have had strong rewards all the way, from the ones who
sold in his first season through to the yearlings who have sold this year.
His return on investment has been exceptional and he has done it on track
as well,” Sangster told ANZ Bloodstock News.
“We wanted to make sure that breeders were looked after and breeders
get every opportunity - it’s not about us, it’s about breeders continuing to
be successful.
“We thought the fairest thing to do was to keep him at the same fee, even
though he probably does warrant an increase.”

Swettenham is also home to another
young stallion on the rise, with Puissance De Lune (Shamardal) having
his fee more than doubled to $19,800 this year on the back of stakes success
from Edward Manifold Stakes (Gr 2, 1600m) winner and VRC Oaks (Gr 1,
2500m) placegetter Moonlight Maid as well as the stakes-placed Southern
Moon and Heart Of Puissance who also burst onto the scene last spring.
That momentum was not missed by breeders last year, with Puissance
De Lune covering 154 mares, up from 40 in 2018, at a fee of $8,800.
“His earnings per runner is easily the best of any second season sire if
you take out The Everest which skews it a little for Rubick,” Sangster said.
“He’s $55,000 per runner which is amazing for a horse whose progeny
are just three-year-olds. He doesn’t have the numbers there, but he still
manages to keep up with the big boys. I think he is 55 per cent winners to
runners and he’s had a winner over 800 metres and they can get out to a
Derby and an Oaks trip. He can throw just about anything.”
Early feedback from breeders about Swettenham’s decision to purchase I
Am Immortal, one of a likely small number of first season sires to be launched
in Victoria this year, appears well founded, with shareholders embracing the
rising four-year-old by I Am Invincible (Invincible Spirit).
“He’s the only dual stakes-winning two-year-old colt by I Am
Invincible and he’s exactly what people want,” the studmaster said.
“He’ll get a Slipper-type horse, he’ll get you an early two-year-old, which
is what people are chasing. He’s
that bold front-running horse and
he’s bloody good looking. You will
be hard-pressed to find a better
looking horse than him in Australia.
He’s exactly what you want to see.”
Sangster said Akeed Mofeed,
the sire of this season’s talented
stakes-winning juvenile Jyoti,
would again be well supported by
the stallion’s owner Pan Sutong
as well as other breeders this year
while shuttler Highland Reel’s first
crop weanlings were leaving a
positive impression.
“Highland Reel’s weanlings have sold really well in the northern
hemisphere, up to $300,000 Australian, for his weanlings. We’ve had Inglis
and Magic Millions out to look at them and they have commented that he
has one of the best crops of weanlings from a freshman sire that they have
seen,” he said.
“They are really powerful horses. He was known for his longevity in his
racing life but people forget that he was a Group 2-winning two-year-old over
1400 metres. He should be able to get a few of those early runners and there’s
some really nice colts and fillies that we have seen that we would have liked to
have got to the weanling sales in a perfect world if it wasn’t for coronavirus.”
Shuttler Sioux Nation (Scat Daddy) will not be returning to
Swettenham Stud this year after one southern hemisphere season.

Three for Rich Enuff
Woodside Park first season sire Rich Enuff (Written
Tycoon) landed his third winner yesterday when
Hamilton Hill (2 f ex Divine City by Ferocity) took
out the TAB QTIS 2YO Maiden Plate (1050m) at
Doomben. The Paul Butterworth-trained filly
defeated Shooting Roses (Shooting To Win) by
a length and three-quarters with Roman Reign
(Holy Roman Emperor) a nose away in third.
Hamilton Hill was purchased by Butterworth for
$40,000 from Book 2 of the Magic Millions Gold
Coast Yearling Sale from the draft of Daandine
Stud. A three-time stakes winner and runner-up
in the 2014 Caulfield Guineas (Gr 1, 1600m), Rich
Enuff stands at Woodside in Victoria for a fee of
$12,100 (inc GST).
First for Late ChargeDespite proving sub-fertile at stud and
returning to training as a gelding, one of the six
foals produce by Late Charge landed him his
first winner yesterday as The Last Charge (2 c ex
Elite Vision by Our Maizcay) took out a Super
Vobis 2YO Handicap (1100m) at Bendigo. The
Kevin Corstens-trained colt held off a late surge
from Mick Price’s River Twain (Headwater) to
win by a nose with Taylor’s Dream (Rubick)
a quarter of a length back in third. The Last
Charge is a homebred for Ken King, who also
raced Late Charge, and is the only named foal
to date of the former Riverbank Farm resident.
Chat on target for Hawkesbury GuineasAfter being scratched from the South Pacific
Classic (Listed, 1400m) due to a foot issue, Chat
(Deep Field) is set to get a belated chance to prove
himself at stakes level in the Hawkesbury Guineas
(Gr 3, 1400m) at Rosehill on Saturday. "I think all
the favourites for the race (Hawkesbury Guineas)
fought out the South Pacific Classic and I thought
my horse would have been a great chance in
that but we just couldn't run there," trainer John
Thompson said. "I think he's at that level and we'll
find out on Saturday. He's had a couple of fails
on heavy tracks but he's just not as effective on
the wet. He has won on a soft track but he's a big,
heavy horse and he tries to get through the heavy
but it just slows him up a bit. Back on a dry track
on Saturday you'll see the best of him."
Parr to make most of Moss Trip opportunityJosh Parr is chasing his fourth win in the
Hawkesbury Crown (Gr 3, 1300m) on Saturday
but won’t get the opportunity to make it back-
to-back triumphs on Warwick Farm mare
Irithea (Snitzel), on whom he won last year’s
Group 3 feature. The jockey was double-
booked on Irithea and Moss Trip (Mossman),
but will ride the latter. “It was unfortunate but
in a case such as that, I honour the first booking
my manager took, and that was Moss Trip,”
Parr told Racing NSW. “I rode Moss Trip when
she resumed in the Group 2 Sapphire Stakes
(1200m) at Randwick on April 11 when the
winner White Moss (Mossman) ran everyone
off their legs. Moss Trip had a setback prior to
that and there is definitely improvement in her
from that first-up run.”
Vow And Declare continues autumn-winter prepDanny O'Brien will use staying races on his home
track at Flemington for his bid to defend Vow
And Declare's (Declaration Of War) Melbourne
Cup (Gr 1, 3200m) crown. The first of those
is Saturday's William Newton VC Handicap
(2600m) which leads to the Andrew Ramsden
Stakes (Listed, 2800m) at Flemington on May 16.
"What we're trying to do is follow what we did
last year," O'Brien said. "Do a bit of racing over
May and June and hence have that shorter break
between that and his first run in the spring. It
really worked well for us last year having the run
in Turnbull Stakes and the Caulfield Cup. We're
lucky these races are on at Flemington, they're a
nice plan B given Queensland is not an option, so
we'll just work with what it is."
Cumani chasing St Leger successMatt Cumani is hoping to back up his win in The
Showdown (1200m) last weekend with a victory
in the VRC St Leger (Listed, 2800m) at Flemington
on Saturday. The Ballarat trainer will saddle
Sign Seal Deliver (Dundeel) and Tarn’s Prince
(Unencumbered) in the three-year-old staying
feature. "For me to win a sharp 1200 metre two-
year-old race one weekend and a staying three-
year-old race the next would really be the icing on
the cake," Cumani said. "They are very much St
Leger style horses and suggest they want this type
of distance. But none of these stakes races are ever
easy. I think it's a mistake to think you purely need
a stayer and it doesn't matter what quality, as at
the end of the day they still need to be quite good."

Two options for All Too RoyalCiaron Maher and David Eustace have two race
options for the consistent sprinter All Too Royal
(All Too Hard) this week as he has accepted for
both the Hawkesbury Gold Rush (Listed, 1100m)
and a 1000-metre handicap at Flemington but no
decision has been made as to where the gelding
will run yet. "We'll have a look at both races,"
assistant trainer Annabel Neasham said. "We
drew badly last week and opted to wait for this
race. He hasn't drawn that well again. They've
thrown him in the race in Melbourne as well. The
horse is in Sydney at the moment and he seems
very well. Glen Boss came and galloped him on
Tuesday and was very happy with his work. He's
a horse that likes being fresh so the gap between
runs won't be an issue. We'll just weigh up which
race we think is most winnable for him."
Ringo back on favoured trackRingo's A Rockstar (Drumbeats) will be out to
enhance his outstanding record over 1000 metres
at the Sunshine Coast where he takes on a classy
field. The Anzac Day meeting on Saturday was set
to mark the start of the winter carnival which has
been revised during the coronavirus pandemic.
Ringo's A Rockstar takes on a well above average
field in the Open Handicap (1000m) but will not
be out of place. He has had seven starts at the
track and distance trip for five wins and a second
when he was beaten a nose. Ringo's A Rockstar
was the last horse trained by the late jockey
and trainer Norm Stephens. The gelding is now
trained by Stephens' son Wayne who has a small
team at Deagon in Brisbane's northern seaside.
"It is a strong field on Saturday but he does love
the big tracks. After Saturday we can have a think
about the winter," Stephens said.
Keys commits Spanish Reef to Chairman’s SaleGroup-winning and Group 1-placed mare
Spanish Reef (Lope De Vega) has been added to
the catalogue for the Inglis Chairman’s Sale next
month. The six-year-old daughter of Lope De Vega
(Shamardal) was a winner of the Sunline Stakes
(Gr 2, 1600m), Schweppervescence Trophy (Gr
3, 1600m) on two occasions and the Ladies Day
Vase (Gr 3, 1600m), as well finishing third behind
Melody Belle (Commands) in last year’s Empire
Rose Stakes (Gr 1, 1600m). “Spanish Reef was easily
the best mare I have ever trained,” trainer Ken Keys
said. “She was a genuinely top-class performer. For
the record, of her last 26 starts, 24 were at Group
level and she had a 50 per cent strike rate for a top
four finish, which speaks volumes for her talent
and consistency.” Spanish Reef will be available for
inspection at Fernrigg Farm from today.
Century up forTeam EdmondsThe Toby and Trent Edmonds stable has reached
100 winners in a season for the third time and is
headed for another milestone. Toby Edmonds
trained 109 winners last season and 106.5 winners
in 2017/18 when his son Trent was his foreman.
This season is their first as a partnership and
Powering's (Power) win at Ipswich on Sunday
was their 100th. The wins are made up of 80 in
Queensland and 20 in NSW. Trent Edmonds said
it had been rewarding to get to the century in
his first full season as a co-trainer. "We equalled
Dad's record of five winners at a meeting earlier
this month and it is a real credit to our staff in
tough times with the coronavirus," he said. "Our
win strike rate is about 21 per cent and our place
rate is running at nearly 47 per cent which is up
there with the best."
Two-year-old double for AquisAquis Farm have continued their stellar autumn
with their two-year-olds, landing a double at
Canterbury yesterday. Homebred Bellevue Star
(Sebring) kicked off the day with a three-quarter
length win in the two-year-old handicap (1200m),
followed by Sauvestre (Hinchinbrook) taking out the
colts and geldings juvenile race by a nose. Sauvestre
was a $500,000 Magic Millions Gold Coast Yearling
Sale purchase by Aquis from the Cressfield draft
and will target the JJ Atkins Stakes (Gr 1, 1400m) in
June. Bellevue Star is out of Bellevue Girl (Exceed
And Excel), who Aquis purchased for $240,000 from
the Newgate draft at the Magic Millions National
Broodmare Sale in 2016, making her a half-sister to
Group 3 winner Bellevue Hill (Pierro).
Miyake charges latefor midweek winThe Chris Waller-trained Miyake (Deep Impact)
was an impressive winner at Canterbury
yesterday, bursting through the field in the final
furlong of the 1900-metre BM70 race to score
by a length and a quarter. “He’s on an upward
curve and is certainly a very valuable colt being
by Deep Impact so it was a very important win
for his career,” stable representative Charlie
Duckworth said. “He has some great owners
that have been very loyal to the stable. It’s
been a long, patient wait for them but it’s been
rewarded.” The three-year-old colt is the first to
race out of Group 3 winner Star Fashion (Street
Cry) who herself is out of six-time stakes winner
Elegant Fashion (Danewin).
Masked Crusaderscores first-upMasked Crusader’s (Toronado) co-trainer Wayne
Hawkes believes his galloper showed “signs of
a good horse” when winning comfortably at
yesterday’s Bendigo meeting. Drawing the inside
barrier, jockey James Winks ended up trailing
the leaders on the inside to the home turn. He
quickened up to win by a length. “Where it’s
always hard is to be sitting behind the leaders like
that and to go at whatever speed you’re doing to
be full throttle in one stride,” Hawkes told Racing.
com. “That’s the sign of a good horse. Good horses
have a turn of foot.” Out of the stakes-winning
mare She’s Got Gears (Invincible Spirit), Masked
Crusader was a $340,000 purchase at the 2018
Inglis Premier Yearling Sale by Hawkes Racing
and Cameron Cooke Bloodstock from the draft of
Gilgai Farm.
Timely city win for BarrThe promising Shadow Of Time (Time For
War) looks like the perfect horse to headline a
new training partnership for the Caloundra-
based Stewart Barr and his daughter after the
gelding won the Mossman Three-Year-Old
Handicap (1350m) at Doomben yesterday.
Barr is a well-known trainer in Queensland,
having won the 2015 Magic Millions Quality
(1300m) with Shadow Of Time’s dam Endless
Shadow (Dane Shadow). Barr trained from
Wondai in the Burnett region and recently
relocated to Caloundra. “The Hulberts (Peter
and Will) have had a lot of horses for us and
still have a couple,” Barr said. “But I have 11
boxes at Caloundra and Shadow Of Time is
leading the way.”

Adelaide aim for Showdown winnerMatt Cumani has been forced to put
Group 1 targets on hold for his Showdown
(1200m) winner Khoekhoe (Turffontein) as
restrictions have scuppered a Queensland
winter campaign. The plan was for the colt
to contest at the highest level in the J.J Atkins
Stakes (Gr 1, 1400m) at Eagle Farm in June.
Instead, Khoekhoe is now likely to head for
the SA Sires’ Produce Stakes (Gr 3, 1400m) on
May 9 at Adelaide. “I would absolutely love to
go to the J.J Atkins, but I don’t think we can,
to be honest, unless they open the borders up
to travel in the next few days,” Cumani told
Racing.com. “He has a very good work rider
and I’d want to send him up, but he’d have to
do two weeks of quarantine and I’d have to do
two weeks of quarantine.”
ATA hopeful of mid-May Tassie returnThe head of the Australian Trainers Association,
Andrew Nicholl, is hopeful Tasmanaian racing
can return on May 15. The Tasmananian
government suspended racing for four weeks
on April 2 due to the global pandemic. Whilst
stakeholders were hopeful of a return to
racing on May 1, the government on April 17
extended that date until at least May 15. Nicholl
told RSN927: “We are really pushing and
pressing the government for a direct response
on this particular issue. Can we resume as
early as the 15th of May?” Nicholl said that
there is nothing more that the industry can
do other than put forward to the Tasmanian
Government the biosecurity protocols which
have operated successfully around the
country. “Unfortunately, the northwest issue
in Tasmania, which we saw with the hospitals,
threw a significant spanner in the works from a
racing viewpoint. The Tasmanian Government
threw its focus on that particular matter and
rightfully so.”
White queries protocolsTasmanian trainer Gary White has questioned
suggested protocols to restart racing in the state
which would see him unable to accompany his
horses to race meetings outside of his region.
"The regulations state that participants and
animals will not be permitted to train outside
their region," White told Racing.com. "But
if they can't train outside their region why
can they race outside their region?" White is
concerned about possible integrity breaches
that may arise from a trainer forcibly entrusting
another conditioner outside their region to
present their horses on race day. "Who has the
culpability if something happens?" he asked.
"That horse once on the truck and gone to the
other stable is out of my care. Something is
going to happen one day. Everybody is just
playing Russian roulette."
VRC considers optionsThe Victorian Racing Club (VRC) is considering
all options for this year’s Spring Carnival,
including holding meetings with crowds as
small as 500 should Covid-19 restrictions
ease. "Unfortunately, the scenarios run
from no Carnival at all through to a Carnival
without any attendance from a crowd
perspective. And then there's an option we're
planning really hard for and hopefully we will
see: a Carnival with crowds," VRC CEO Neil
Wilson told Racing.com. "We do expect that
to be a very different format. We have heard
in recent times the health representative’s
office (saying) there potentially won't be mass
gatherings this calendar year, which obviously
the Carnival fits within that envelope. It's
early days still, I think, we've got six months
until the Carnival."
Swan Hill carnival reduced to one dayThe three-day meeting at Swan Hill, scheduled
for June 5, 6 and 7, has been reduced to one
day, June 7. It follows the reduction of May's
three-day Warrnambool carnival to two days,
an all-jumps program on May 5 and a feature
flat meeting the following day. Feature races at
Swan Hill will be retained including the Swan
Hill Cup (1600m), the Golden Topaz (1200m)
and Elvstroem Classic (1300m). Swan Hill
Jockey Club chief executive Aaron Garvie said
it was not ideal having the three-day carnival
consolidated into one day in 2020 but with the
current Covid-19 restrictions in place it was the
correct decision. Racing Victoria said Donald
would now hold the meeting on June 5 while
the Apsley Cup (2000m) will move from June 7
to June 6 and be transferred from Edenhope to
Casterton.
Six-month disqualification for TarrantQueensland jockey Luke Tarrant was yesterday
disqualified for six months by stewards after
pleading guilty to misconduct after an altercation
with fellow rider Larry Cassidy after race nine at
Doomben yesterday. Tarrant also head-butted
Cassidy in the vicinity of the scales area, leaving
Cassidy injured. Tarrant was banned for six
months, starting immediately and expiring on
October 22. Tarrant also breached the Covid-19
social distancing protocols.
Mott back on trackMelbourne-based jockey Jamie Mott is expected
to make a long-awaited comeback to race riding
after five months on the sidelines. Mott, 32, who
underwent two surgeries to repair a broken leg
suffered last November, rode at the Sandown jump
outs yesterday as he prepares for a return to race
riding. "It's the longest I've ever been out injured
so it's great to be back, it's a bit like riding a bike
so feels good to start getting the work in," Mott
told Racing.com. "I started back riding work on
Monday and just have to make sure I don't push
it too much and just see how the muscles feel day
to day. Depending on muscle soreness, I could be
back at the races in as soon as two weeks, but it
could take as long as six, we'll just have to see."
Two-week ban for StockdaleVictorian apprentice Thomas Stockdale has
been suspended for two weeks after incurring
two suspensions last week and will be out of the
saddle until May 7. As a result, Stockdale has
been forced to forfeit the mounts on last-start
winners Jack Regan (Rock Of Gibraltar), Buffalo
River (Noble Mission) and Final Man (Reward For
Effort). "It's really disappointing to have to miss
those opportunities and I feel bad for letting down
trainers that have helped me so much," Stockdale
told Racing.com. "It will be tough to watch those
horses in particular race but I'll certainly be
cheering them on. I'm committed to learning
from this situation and am planning on spending
this time out continuing to improve on learning
more about the craft and how I can get better."

Vella facing prohibited substance chargesColac trainer Kylie Vella has been charged
by Racing Victoria stewards after Admiral’s
Joker (Bel Esprit) tested positive to non-
steroidal anti-inflammatory drug Diclofenac
after a win at Flemington almost 11 months
ago. Vella is facing three charges, including
administering or causing Diclofenac (Voltaren)
to be administered on race day; administering
or causing the prohibited substance to
be administered prior to the race; and, in
alternative to the first two charges, that the
substance was detected in a post-race sample
following the race. The charges will be heard
by the Victorian Racing Tribunal at a time to be
fixed.

Record Gavelhouse catalogue onlineGavelhouse.com has reached a new
milestone and is offering their largest ever
catalogue of 132 lots. The catalogue includes
66 broodmares, one of which is a stakes-
placed half-sister to Group 1 winner First
Seal (Fastnet Rock). Entered as Lot 68, Best
Command (Court Command) is in foal to
Sacred Falls (O'Reilly). Bidding will close on
Monday, April 27 from 5pm local time, with
many of the entries offered for unreserved
sale. Click here to view the catalogue.
Australian targetsfor Jennifer Eccles An Australian spring campaign beckons for
New Zealand Oaks (Gr 1, 2400m) winner
Jennifer Eccles (Rip Van Winkle). “She will
come back mid-May,” trainer Shaun Ritchie
said. “ I am expecting a much more rounded
and stronger version of Jennifer Eccles, but
an equally as willing racehorse. We have got
a few options for the spring, but we are all at
the hands of government rules. We have got
three options. One would be a Sydney-based
campaign with her goal race being the Golden
Eagle at Rosehill with a couple of lead-ups to
that. There are fillies and mares options in
Melbourne and if we can’t go abroad then
we have got the first two legs of the Hastings
series and then there will be a decision after
that as to whether we can get to Melbourne
or not for one of those bigger races over the
Carnival.”

QEII victory would be sweeter for ShinnPlaya Del Puente (Elzaam) nearly caused a huge
shock in the Hong Kong Derby (Listed, 2000m)
last month when going down narrowly at odds
of 289/1. Jockey Blake Shinn is hoping he can
go one better in the QEII Cup (Gr 1, 2000m). “It
was a bittersweet feeling to run second beaten
so narrowly - a neck - in what some would say
is the biggest race in Hong Kong. We got beat
by Golden Sixty and he’s the champion horse of
his age group,” said Shinn. “I think he’s got a big
race in him. Whether he can do it in this race
against the seasoned horses, time will tell, but
we’ll give it our best shot.”
Questions to answer for More Than This in Champions MileMore Than This (Dutch Art) will be reunited
with jockey Karis Teetan on Sunday’s HK$20
million Champions Mile (Gr 1, 1600m), who
has a perfect record on the gelding. “I’m happy
to be on him back over the mile - I’d always
thought he’d be better over further but to be
honest when he was winning those races, he
was doing it the hard way,” Teetan said. “I still
think he ran pretty well in those Classic Series
races, it’s just the horse who was winning was
too good for all of them.” The Champions Mile is
one of three Group 1 races on FWD Champions
Day at Sha Tin, along with the HK$25 million
(approx $AUD 5.1m) QEII Cup (2000m) and the
HK$18 million (approx $AUD 3.7m) Chairman’s
Sprint Prize (1200m).

New dates for Tattersalls Craven and Ascot SaleOwing to the social impact of government
guidelines surrounding the coronavirus virus and
continued uncertainty over the resumption of
any racing in Britain and Ireland, the Tattersalls
Craven and Ascot Breeze Up Sale will now take
place in Newmarket on Tuesday, June 23. The
Tattersalls Ireland Derby Sale, incorporating
the May Sale, will move to the week beginning
Monday 13th July, while the Tattersalls Ireland
Goresbridge Breeze Up Sale will take place Friday
24th July, with the breezes taking place earlier that
week. More information is available via www.

France looking at restarting racingFrance Galop has held what it described as a
positive and constructive meeting with French
government authorities over when the country
can return to racing. Race meetings have been
suspended since March 17 due to the global
pandemic but hope is that racing will resume
at some stage in May behind closed doors.
France Galop president Edouard de Rothschild
consulted with French government officials on
Tuesday, with each party giving themselves 48
hours to come up with an agreement. A France
Galop statement said: “It was a positive and
constructive meeting. Representatives of the
public authorities and of the industry have given
themselves 48 hours to lay down the terms of
an agreement, which will allow the horse racing
industry to deal with and overcome the impact
of the current health crisis.”
Fellowes hoping Arran can make Melbourne returnCharlie Fellowes is keeping Prince Of Arran
(Shirocco) on course for a third tilt at the
Melbourne Cup (Gr 1, 3200m) despite the
global pandemic continuing to cast doubt over
international participation. “If we can’t come it
would be devastating,” Fellowes told RSN927. “I
have loved my trips down to Australia over the
last few years and I would miss it very much. As
far as we are concerned, until I am told that we
can’t come to Australia for the Spring Carnival,
the plan is very much to
prep him this year
to come down to
Australia for the
Spring Carnival
and have a
couple of runs
down there.”
Super Seth SPORTPIX
| 11 |
Super Seth (Dundeel) has been retired
to begin stallion duties at Waikato
Stud later this year, and will be the
first Caulfield Guineas (Gr 1, 1600m)
winner to stand at stud in New Zealand for 30
years.
Waikato Stud’s Mark Chittick, in unveiling
the farm’s 2020 stallion roster, confirmed that
the Anthony Freedman-trained three-year-
old colt would not race again after his closing
fourth in last Saturday’s All Aged Stakes (Gr 1,
1400m) at Randwick.
The son of Dundeel (High Chaparral), who
won twice and was stakes-placed in three starts
as a juvenile before rounding out his racing
career with five victories from 12 starts, will
stand for NZ$35,000 (all fees plus GST).
Waikato Stud’s champion sire Savabeel
(Zabeel) will again maintain his place at the top
of the New Zealand stallion ranks this year and
will stand at NZ$100,000 in 2020 after his fee
was kept private last year and he operated to a
closed book.
Chittick says Super Seth possesses many of
the traits of a successful stallion and believes
that he can continue the legacy left by fellow
Waikato Stud sires of the past.
“He’s all quality, a fantastic looking horse
with the performance to match his pedigree,”
Chittick said.
“Top of our list when it comes to sourcing
a successful stallion is a turn of foot and Super
Seth’s acceleration was mind-blowing. That was
emphasized when he ran down Alligator Blood
to win the Caulfield Guineas.
“Our past and present champion sires
Centaine, O’Reilly, Pins, Savabeel and Ocean
Park, all possessed incredible acceleration, but
even they couldn’t have matched Super Seth’s
turn of foot. That’s the quality we look for and
he demonstrated that on many occasions.”
Super Seth, who is out of Salutations
(Redoute’s Choice), is a half-brother to the
three-time stakes winner Wild Planet (Animal
Kingdom) and Sydney City winner The Bald
Eagle (All American). His second dam is the
Group 2-winning sprinter Toast Of The Coast
(Rory’s Jester).
It was New Zealand agent Dean Hawthorne
who first identified Super Seth as a yearling,
going to $280,000 for the Arrowfield Stud-
consigned colt at the 2018 Inglis Australian
Easter Yearling Sale on behalf of his long-time
client Jonathan Munz.
“We typically don’t buy many colts. In fact,
he was the only colt we purchased that year in
Australia, but when he walked out of the box
at the Easter Sale it was obvious he was a must
have,” Hawthorne said.
“He is perfectly balanced. If you take a look at
his yearling conformation photo you can see how
beautifully balanced he is - a short-coupled colt
with a great head and amazing quality.
“The other thing that immediately attracted
me to him was how much he looked like
Redoute’s Choice. We were very confident
Redoute’s Choice mares would complement
the Dundeel sire line.”
Waikato Stud is the majority shareholder
in Super Seth with partners JML Bloodstock,
Milan Park, Nearco Stud, Pencarrow Stud and
high-profile Australian owner Richard Pegum
who all have committed a number of high-
quality mares to the stallion.
“Opportunities to get these quality stallions

are very rare and when we saw that electric
acceleration in the Caulfield Guineas we
became immediately interested,” Chittick said.
“Our business manager Mike Rennie was on
course at the time and I told him to go and have
a really good look at him. He had everything
we look for in a racehorse with a stud career in
mind.”
Freedman said: “It’s sad to lose a horse of
such quality from our stable, especially knowing
the potential he had to win more at the top level
as a four-year-old, but his credentials for stud
are impressive and the uncertainty around
upcoming race programs made it difficult to
keep him in training.”
Meanwhile, Ocean Park (Thorn Park),
whose daughter Tofane landed the All Aged
Stakes in a breakthrough Group 1 performance
at Randwick, will stand for NZ$20,000 while
Tivaci (High Chaparral), whose eldest
progeny are rising two-year-olds, will stand for
NZ$12,500 and Ardrossan (Redoute’s Choice)
has had his fee set at NZ$3000.
Waikato Stud was
dealt a blow late last
year when Sacred Falls
(O’Reilly) died after a
battle with a rare liver
disease while Rock ‘N’
Pop (Fastnet Rock)
relocated to Okawa Stud
at Hawke’s Bay after last
year’s breeding season.

SEBRING’S FASTEST, MOST BRILLIANT SON AT STUD!
GREAT VALUE!
Analysis: The Gai Waterhouse and Adrian Bott-trained and Aquis Park-
raced filly Bellevue Star staged a promising effort in winning here at
her second start. Resuming after finishing ninth in a two-year-old fillies’
open handicap (1000m) at Moonee Valley in December, she began well
and after working a bit, crossed to the front. She then travelled well at a
good tempo, got a break at the 200m and held on to score a good win.
Elizabeel was slowly away and was then ridden to recover from her good
barrier (3) to settle in third place on the rails until into the home straight.
But she did not get into clear running until passing the 200m and she
then fought on well for second, looking suited to further. The favourite
Kiku settled in sixth place (with a trail), improved (deep) rounding the
turn and kept running on well for third. [KB]

Analysis: The Chris Waller-trained colt Sauvestre stamped his potential
with a narrow but good win when racing on debut here. He travelled
particularly well in third place on the rails, got into clear running on turning
for home, took a while to pick up and then stormed home to grab victory on
the post. He should appreciate advancing in distance being from a Zabeel
(Sir Tristram) mare and he looks a colt with a good future. Inveigle staged
a bold effort on debut. He worked early on before crossing to the front.
He then travelled along nicely, got a break on straightening and was only
overhauled nearing the post for (short head) second with third-placed colt
Switch Play finishing six lengths further back. [KB]
